I have a Gigabyte 8IEXP and the chipset fan is off balance or something. Can I safely remove this fan and not worry about something burning out, or perhaps I can replace it with something else. Its driving me crazy this thing whirring and rubbing against the metal or something. If I can replace it - any suggestions and/or links?

Picture of Motherboard

In the pictures its the golden colored fan that needs replacing.

Thanx in advance

You probably don't even need that fan. Just unplug it and see how stable your comp is.

I just ordered this HS for my NB today. It isnt all that much, but I figured it would be enough seeing as I dont OC.

As for removing it, if it gets too hot, your computer will become unstable, it shouldnt do any damage.

My EPoX 8K3A+ (KT333) has a regular heatsink on its chipset. My old Soyo (KT266) had a fan/heatsink combo. You'd probably be fine with a heatsink like BG4533 posted, especially if you aren't trying to overclock excessively. It will cost you a lot less than the Zalman I posted. I think most chipset cooling units are attached poorly to the chipset from the factory, so they don't work anywhere nearly as efficiently as you might imagine.

Ditto.
I have one on my KT7A-RAID. It cools it better that the old HSF combo that was on it before.

I have the Epox 8k7a+ mobo and the fan on my amd chipset has been giving me a similar problem. I took it out and cleaned it out but every few hours or so it starts to make a really high pitched weezing noise, and it's offbalance or something. It came with the mobo and it's by coolermaster.

Do you think I should get the Zalman heatsink for $10 or however much it costs or the heatsink from All Electronics that costs something like $0.75? They were both posted in this discussion.

First a few questions. Are you overclocking or planning to? If yes, than the Zalman would be a better choice. Does your mobo have retaining pins to hold on the HS unit? If it does than the Zalman would likely be a better choice because you would need thermal epoxy which is a few more dollars and not removable to hold on the All Electronics HS. The $0.75 unit works fine for me though.

Thanks Brian. I have the AMD Athlon 1400MHz cpu and I don't plan to overclock. I don't think my mobo has retaining pins.

I got a Gigabyte board, GA-8PE677 Ultra and it's doing the same thing too. Sucks. I wonder if I can remove mine?

Where can I get thermal epoxy from? I couldn't find it on the all electronics site although I did find some thermal compound with syringe.

thermal compound

That's like thermal grease right? Epoxy is a glue isn't it?

Thanks...

That's not the same thing right? Epoxy is a type of glue isn't it?

Thermal Compound, Thermal Paste, and whatever other names there are for it --- Is just a paste that has good thermal transfer propeties.
Thermal Epoxy --- A Glue that has good thermal transfer propeties.

I had the same thing on my old KT7. I just popped it off and used Arctic Alumina adhesive to attach an old 486 HS/F combo. Worked like a charm... Helped overclocks by a few points, too...

Do you know a place that I could buy some Arctic Alumina adhesive from that also has a simple heatsink that I could buy as well? I'd like to order both items from the same place to save on shipping.

Thanks...

Do you think I can buy this Zalman Northbridge Chipset Heatsink Gold Plated kit with the adhesive from Newegg? Do you think this will work well for the $6 plus shipping?

NB fans are a marketing ploy, eye-candy, like colored circuit boards. If your board has any kind of halfway decent sink at all, simply toss the fan, enjoy the quiet.

The Zalman kit will do an excellent job- total overkill. Everything you need, at one low price. Be sure that the surfaces are very clean and absolutely oil-free prior to bonding.

And, uhh, blasting the crud out of the processor heatsink will go a long way towards promoting stability and reducing temps...

So you're suggesting even for the cpu processor, you don't need to use a fan, and you can just use a good heatsink?

That is possible with Via chips or maybe a drastically underclocked Athlon or P4, but at full speed they would burn up quickly with nearly all Heatsinks. He was just reffering to northbridges.

Newegg heatsink

Best Byte actually has that NB heatsink for $3.99. It would come out to only $9.

Yeah, I checked that out but I had already placed the order at Newegg, and it was only $3 more. Plus, I have experiences with Newegg and know that they are very reliable.

ManDeJapan-
I was referring to the crud in your cpu hsf, from the linked pic.... under the fan, on top of the heatsink fins.... modern processors pretty much require fan cooling, and clean heatsinks.
BG4533-
And, yeh, thanks for the link to the zalmans at bestbyte, best deal I've seen....

Picture? I don't think I posted a picture of my heatsink. Thanks for the help though.
