Lost a lens cap today, it popped off while on a wooden bridge. It rolled about 5 feet, then fell off into a big pond.
After a few minutes of waiting, it was apparent that the cap wasn't going to float to the edge.

Are the generic ones on ebay/amazon decent?
I see ones with a little string attached - makes sense now

in honor of the cap, here's a few pics from todays trip.

I vastly prefer center-squeeze lens caps such as those made by Tamron:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/..._Snap_On_Lens_Cap.html

I hate the "normal" ones that come with Sigma and Canon lenses that are side-squeeze because they are so difficult to get on and off with the lens hood in the forward position. This is not a problem with center squeeze caps. The only downside to the center-squeeze types is that they will not fit ultrawide lenses that have a protruding front element.

The center squeeze caps on eBay are really hit or miss. A lot of them have too much spring tension making them hard to squeeze. Even more have really shallow "finger wells," making it hard for fingers to get a grip on them. If you go to any camera store besides Ritz and those other cruddy mall stores, they'll most likely have center-squeeze types.

Thats exactly the type I have for all of my lenses now, the canon ones were falling off every time I looked at them it seemed.

Why the obsession with online order? Just go to your nearest camera store and look, try, select and buy. Agree about side squeeze vs. center squeeze.

I was ordering another lens ATM. If I wasn't I would have gone to Ritz, Penn Camera, etc

i'm actually disappointed that i didn't take any pics of it floating away

it was a center squeeze, but also squeezable from the sides

I got rid of all my canon lens cap... they suck. I bought either tamron middle/side squeeze ones or generic canon middle/side squeeze ones off ebay (they have the string thing attached but i usually clip those off). So much easier to take on and off especially with a huge lens hood on.

I bought several Promaster replacement caps from Click Camera (national chain? not sure), and they are the center squeeze type. They work quite well and are very secure. I prefer them to my older Minolta caps which have the side squeeze. Only annoying thing is they have a little loop on the side (for a lanyard) which interferes with hoods so I just cut it off.

i bought a promaster one locally, but it didn't stay on very well at all
it was odd, because it looked and felt exactly like the nikon cap

i ended up ordering a replacement nikon cap from adorama

Maybe Minolta lenses agree with the Promaster caps better?

I replaced all my canon caps with tamron caps. They are much nicer as you can use them with a hood on. Build quality as well as tightness are both better too.

Edit: For example, Tamron 77mm Lens Cap
