My computer has a Core 2 Duo E6600. While sufficient for now, it won't last too long going forward. Is it possible to replace a processor without buying a whole new computer? If so, what do I need to do?

All you would need to do is buy a socket 775 CPU. Something like a Q9550 etc. Take out the old put in the new. If the motherboard has to be removed, then you might have to reset your BIOS, so you need to know that. Also need to apply thermal paste properly. A E6600 is a 65nm CPU, so make sure your motherboard supports a newer 45nm CPU.

Why wont it last going forward?

In any case, you can replace with the same processor, or upgrade to a better one for that particular socket type. As the previous poster stated.. its a socket 775, so you have some options....

You'll need to confirm with the manufacturer of your motherboard, that you can simply drop the new processor in, or you may need a BIOS update to accommodate a higher end model. ..

If you have a microcenter close to you, see if they are selling the Q9300 for $100 still. They were a few weeks ago.

OP, have you ever installed a CPU before? It is pretty straight forward, but can be a daunting task for a first timer...It can easily be done by reading the installation instructions or finding how to articles on the internet.

You also might need to flash your motherboard BIOS if your current one doesn't support the CPU you want to upgrade to. Check the motherboard specs on the website (also, the most current BIOS downloads can be found there). Again, this is a straight forward task but can be intimidating to someone who hasn't done it before, especially since there is a small chance you could brick your motherboard if not done properly.

The only reason I post this is because you asked if it upgrading is possible, implying that you might not be familiar with this process...
