Replacing a shroud fan, need some advice.

I'm planning on replacing a 92mm delta fan on my cpu shroud (on a dell sc420) because the sucker is too dang loud. Most of the time, the air it blows out of the case isn't even warm, its cool! I suspect the heatpipe on the cpu does a great job (it is used on the celeron 2.4 chip all the way to the p4 3.6 chips).

What I want to do is replace the fan entirely with a 92mm panaflo FBA09A12 low speed, forcing it to run constantly at 1300 RPM. This is for a P4 2.8HT chip. Do you guys think it would be safe to do this? I know temps will rise a bit, but I have a feeling it would be still in a safe range. I would monitor temps with a program but nothing lets me as hmonitor, sandra, everest, even intel's stuff all don't work. Any input is much appreciated.

What are the base line temperatures in the BIOS? If you are getting the heatsink mounted properly and the temperatures are normal there, you shouldn't be too concerned.

Which mainboard is this? Odd that no programs can give you temperature readings in Windows.

The motherboard uses the E7221 chipset. I'm unable to check even base line temps in bios. It's simply not in the options. This is really frustrating me. I've got the feeling that for safety's sake, Dell put in an overkill fan for these systems, but somehow make it not possible to check on temps... which actually doesn't make sense.

Anyways, this is what my heatpipe + fan looks like. Just wanna take out the fan and see what happens. =|

Hrmm. Does anyone know of any cpu temp monitor that might work with the Dell sc420? So far speedfan, hmonitor, sandra, everest, and intel's stuff all don't work...

If a program can't do it, I'd like to look into external monitors if such things exist for cpu temp monitoring? Thanks.

You didn't mention Motherboard Monitor. I don't know if it works with Dell, but it might be worth a try.

Just one I forgot. MBM5 doesn't work either... Sigh. Apparently the sc420 faq board doesn't have an answer for this either.

Why not get a medium or high speed panaflo with a simple fan controller so you can adjust the speed? I think you can find a simple fan controller for about 20 bucks.

also my mobo came with a temp monitoring software, maybe check the drivers that came with your comp or contact dell and maybe they have software for you.
