Hi everyone,

I've just bought the Intel X25-M 120GB(yesterday's shellshocker deal $179+tax). I currently have a 60GB Vertex 2, that I want replace with the Intel. Does the intel migration software mentioned in the included pamphlet do a complete clone of the old drive? after I do that, can I just remove the old drive and expect the system to boot normally? Or is there any manual steps to perform e.g. changing sata connection on mobo, make any bios changes? I have Asus M4A88T-V Evo mobo.

Sorry if this is a simple question, I haven't done this sort of cloning before.

thanks!

Why do you want to replace one for the other? I'm not %100 sure on this, but a clean install is prob just as easier than to do a straight clone.

Does the Acronis software provided by Intel align your partition properly when cloning?

What operating system is this?

If its Windows 7, cant u image the windows partion using backup, and then use the install CD to reload the partition back onto the new drive after you pulled the vertex?

You would need a spare drive in there to hold the image tho.

My vertex 2 is running out of space, so wanted to go with the larger driver.
I'm using Windows 7.
Emulex: Is the acronis software the one that is downloaded from the Intel website(or is it in the mini disc)? So If i understand correctly, it will clone the existing drive to the new drive, then I can just disconnect the existing drive and boot off the new one?

thanks.

windows 7 should do it itself.

it has an option in backup that allows you to take an image of your os drive.

Then you put in the install cd, and load up image instead of reloading the entire install process.

Acronis is a stand alone program, he says it should be on the mini cd, however i dont remember seeing that when i got my intel ssd's.
But acronis should also do it for ya.

Hi folks,

I used the Intel Migration tool, and it cloned the drive correctly. However, when I boot up, it still used the old drive as the boot drive, and if I tried F8 to select the new drive, i got a message like 'Bootmgr missing'. I must mention that I also still have my old XP installation, installed on the original drive that I moved into this new machine. Do I need to edit the boot.ini to point it to the new 'cloned' drive?

Doesn't windows 7 make/use a small hidden partition for boot information? Maybe that wasn't cloned?

I recently made the same switch from an HDD to the X25-M. I just reinstalled everything. Even though Win7 doesn't need reinstalled often like XP used to, it's still nice having a fresh system... although it did take me the better part of a day.

Hi folks,

thanks for your comments. There is no hidden partition for me for Windows 7. I was thnking of using BootIt NG (terabyte Unlimited software), to create a small boot partition and use that, but it just looks a little complicated, though it is probably easy to use once it gets used to. Anyways, I ended using EasyBCD 2.0.2 (free), and it instantly helped me to more all the boot-related folders and files to the new drive. So now all the boot stuff is running from the new drive, and at some point in the future, I can remove the XP install.

Any thoughts on whether its better to create a separate boot partition and use something like BING or Grub?

Next question...best video card for doing video editing

thanks!
