I've been using a Asus U30JC laptop as a secondary/travel machine for the past 9 years (I didn't realize it's been that long until just now), but the screen is on the fritz and I think it's time to start looking at replacements. I upgraded it a while ago with a WD Black2 hybrid drive (128gb flash / 1 tb hard) and performance was perfect for my needs until today, essentially.
My desktop/main PC is a Ryzen 2700X box with most of the trimmings. I also have a work-owned and supplied laptop (HP Elitebook X360 1030 G2) that is hobbled by a number of ridiculous admin rules (no Chrome or Firefox, for instance). It runs any authorized apps well, though.
I tend to use the laptop that just died for personal travel and writing - so a mix of typing in coffeeshops and on the road. I often use it with large Excel sheets as well, and like the ability to occasionally game (mostly Civ, although V didn't work well on the old machine).
Do people think I'd be happy with the Surface Go? The Costco bundle is appealing, especially considering the other options I have for the price? Or should I really look at the Pro or a proper laptop? A good keyboard for typing would be important for me and I know that the type covers are nice but no match for a real keyboard (I'm using a MagicForce KB with Gateron Brown switches at home).
Are there other machines I should be looking at? Because it's very much a tertiary machine, I'm not looking to spend serious money. Not interested in Mac.
