Are we forgetting about the blocked field goal that could've won it for OU?

They still had an opportunity to win. A good team seizes those opportunities.

Just had a thought.... Why do the ref's work for any conference... perhaps they should "work" for a central entity...

Then everyone gets same training, you get random officials and each game and no affiliations to anyone.

That way there are no "homers" in the bunch.

It's one thing for a team to not capitalize on it's own opportunities...it is another for an outside entity to steal away that team's chances because they can't make the correct calls.

I don't have a dog in this fight (Bama fan) but I'm just amazed that between the officials on the field and the official in the booth, the correct call did not occur.

News stories that start with false statements in the first sentence FTL.

What led to the Ducks victory was OK's inability to stop them from scoring the winning TD.

they should never had the ball to begin with. did you even watch the game?

then when they got the ball, they had another bad replay decision.

Whether the Ducks should have had the ball is completely irrelevant. The fact is that isn't why they won the game.

And the only rational way to have sports competitions, is for both sides to accept that the refereee's calls define reality within the context of the game, it doesn't matter if they are right or wrong in some other context, they are right by definition within the game. So by definition, the Ducks should have had the ball, because that was the call.

If teams and fans don't accept that going in, they should forget about sports, because any other way of looking at it will ultimately destroy the game.

whether the Ducks should have the ball is irrelevant?? um your not in a great position to score unless you have the ball.......so it seems pretty damn important.

And basically what you're saying is there should be no instant replay. Which i agree.

You dont have two REPLAYED situations within minutes and BLOW both of them. its insulting to technology and human intelligence.

I keep reading this and it makes me laugh. That isnt why they won the game? well if the correct call is made, even after viewing it on replay, the game is over.

the got the chance to win..........twice.

no team should have to play against another team plus bad officiating.

I'm with you on that, but it still doesn't change the fact that two things that OU had control over contributed to their loss. Not stopping the touchdown, and not providing protection for the game-winning field goal.

the pac-10 confirmed earlier today that this ref was the same one who allowed the 5 laterals for a TD in the infamous Standford-Cal "band" game

First let me state that I'm a huge Oregon fan. That said, here is what I observed while watching the game:

For the onside kick call, there were actually two mistakes made. One, an Oregon player touched the ball first before it traveled 10 yards. Two, even after touching the ball first, Oregon never came up with the ball in the pile up; Oklahoma did. Why was possession given to Oregon? Regarding the first mistake, the Oregon player was flying through the air when contact with the ball was made, and with the angles provided with the replay, it was a very close call (the player seems to touch the ball after it traveled 9 yards, but since he was flying forward through the air, it was a tough call to overturn). Conference bias probably played a big role in the first mistake, but I expect that a lot of non-conference games are tainted with some degree of bias.

The bigger second mistake was made because the instant replay officials simply didn't have the angle showing that Oklahoma recovered the ball in the pile up. The angle showing that was shot by a local news camera man and was never made available to the officials. I saw the video on the local news Sunday night, and it clearly shows (without a doubt) that Oregon never had possession of the ball in the onside kick pile up.

In the pass interference call, the ball did look like it was touched by Oklahoma's defense before the pass interference call was made. Another mistake, but a relatively smaller one.

I'm not sure how the officials determined possession in the onside kick pile up, but they definitely deserve their suspension.

Actually, the referee's calls does not define reality within the context of the game. The set of rules that has been predefined and that both sides agree to is what defines the 'reality'. The referee's job is to make sure both sides abide by those rules. Obviously when the referee makes a mistake that can/does change the outcome of the game. (Read - Cheaters).

If we were all to agree that right or wrong we should accept the ref's call, then why do we have a review system at all? The whole point of the review system is to have the most accurate call, mistake and biased free. If you are arguing that the system should be improved, then I would agree. But to remove the system would be to allow future PAC-10 cheaters (I mean refs) to continue making calls in the their team's favor.

So what you're saying then is that the refereeing was rigged? And would that apply to all games or just Pac-10?

Is suspending this crew really the best thing to do? Now you're going to have some "backup" crew officiating a game that otherwise wouldn't be on the field. Is that really going to help the quality of your conference's officials?

I must be arguing on the internet.... some assholes have taken my statement completely out of context and then claim that "proves my ignorance"...

My bad, I forgot... the Big-12 uses infallible Almighty God and His Angels as their referees.

Nope. If anything, this debacle will ruin Oregon's chances in the rankings this year.

This reminds me of the Hue Hollins Pippin foul, only not as big a deal. That Hollins foul was the worst call in sports history, especially since it changed the whole outcome of the playoffs that year.

Though as a non-call it's more akin to the fouls that were missed when the indiana pacers were pushing the Bulls around in game six of the playoffs in 1998.

Instant replay without freeze frame is crap, and the refs not seeing something that's difficult to see isn't nearly as bad as calling something that didn't happen.
