*UPDATED 01/25/11*

I've decided on my build! I'm going for a sneaky, thief-like assassin. Let me know what you think.

Race: Dunmer
Birthsign: The Thief
Specialization: Stealth
Attributes: Agility & Speed

Skills
Marksman - To me this an obvious choice.
Armorer - So I can always have my equipment in top shape (plus to fill an endurance slot)
Sneak - Another one that seems pretty obvious
Illusion - To me this is one of the very best skills in the game because of how well rounded it is.
Conjuration - This should help aid me in battle and well as provide a distraction against groups or tough enemies.
Alteration - This is an awesome skill. It allows me to unlock doors in seconds, have a powerful shield and alter encumbrance.
Acrobatics - It's easy to control, starts me out at level 25 so I can shoot while jumping.

I figure this build would be great because the following skills govern 1 attribute: Agility (2), Endurance (1), Personality (1), Intelligence (1), Willpower (1) and Speed(1). Leveling up armor should be sweet because I can repair right after every battle. What do you think?

I've been gobbling up all the recently released information about Skyrim and it totally got me itching to play Oblivion once more. I picked up the GOTY edition and am ready to go...well mostly. I need to figure out how I should play the game.

My question for you folks is this: What class did you enjoy playing? I've always wanted to play a Thief and steal tons of stuff, make mad cash and break into every home at night, but I've always doubted their combat abilities. Is it possible to be a badass and a Theif? Do you have to use daggers and bow & arrows? If I recall correctly the Thieves guild has a really nice reward at the end of it.

What about a Mage?

My overall goal is to play the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves guild storylines because they're just so damn awesome. But it's been ages since I've played the game and I'm pretty sure I've messed up and forgotten some information here.

Playing an all out thief with a bow was actually one of my more difficult playthroughs. The most effective in combat for me at least was being a battlemage, wearing heavy armor and using melee spells instead of ranged. You can effectively play in pretty much any way. You can most certainly get away with being a sneaky mage or battlemage, and you don't need to fit the role to do the quest lines. I went through the whole mages guild as a fighter, and I don't remember anything about the thieves or dark brotherhood being impossible unless you were specced for stealth.

A sneaky mage in light armor with a light sword (spellcasting gray mouser) might be survivable with good summoning skill.

I played as a battlemage with heavy armor and a set of heavily enchanted warhammers (different damages for different creatures) plus the summons to district mobs.

I didn't even consider a Battlemage. It sounds interesting, but really I'd like to steal a BUNCH of stuff and make mad cash. Oh and backstab people. Someone was telling me that you can brew an invisibility potion that will, essentially, make you invisible long enough for you to regenerate enough mana to use it again.

Thief class isn't bad, because you can just pick up swordsmanship or even destruction and defend yourself quite well. Plus, once you get high sneak, you just critical sneak attack things with the bow and they die.

I almost always make a thief because lockpicking is such a more viable tool than any other skill. I just wish it was much more in depth on sneaking such as Thief was. Or at least more like Morrowind.

You dont have to use daggers or bows to be a good thief. Heavy boots certainly dont help, but like I said, there's absolutely nothing stopping you from being a sneaky mage. You might have to give up an early bonus to a class of spellcasting, but as long as you use it, it'll grow.

I had a character that was heavy armor, blade, sneak, destruction, restoration, alteration, mysticism. I could just as easily face an enemy down as sneak around a house.

I wouldnt rely on invisibility potions, or invisibility at all. You can get to the point where you can cast invisibility so regularly that you can literally bypass everything. Its practically game breaking and saps all the fun out of playing because theres zero challenge. Anything happens, poof youre gone.

Whichever class you pick, do this play through as a Vampire! It's really fun, and you can be pretty powerful.

Get rid of acrobatics. Virtually the only thing it effects is your jump height. You can very easily raise this skill by just jumping around, and you'll get the stat boost for leveling your unchosen skills. It has virtually no effect on survivability anyway. A complete waste of a slot IMO.

I also don't think conjuration is necessary. It requires a lot of use to keep at level with the others, and I just don't see the benefit of it for a stealth character.

You basically left out the bread and butter blade/block and armor skills. No matter how sneaky or good you are with a bow, you'll need to engage enemies at close range very often. Certainly more important than acrobatics.

I would suggest dropping Conjuration for Blade, Alteration for Security, and Acrobatics for Light Armor. Sure, those magics sound good, but don't offer much help. I can't run a class without security (even warrior or mage) because of all the locked doors and chests throughout Oblivion. The bow sneak attack is very good and you can hit from quite a long range, but a lot of fights will end up in your face, up close and personal. Helps to be able to bring out a short sword and finish the job. I believe bow sneak attacks only do 1.5x damage as opposed to the 6x damage a blade hit does.

Also, an easy way to level armorer and an armor type is to buy a bunch of the armor type and repair hammers, set difficulty to easy (while level 1), pickpocket a guard and resist arrest. Allow them to beat on you until all your armor is in disrepair, talk to one and pay the 25 gold fine. Repair all the broken armor and repeat. So long as you're level 1 and it is on the easiest difficulty, the guards to 0 damage. Just don't sleep until you hit 100 repair and 100 armor. This also works for block as well.

I would never drop conjuration personally. It's my favorite skill in fact. First thing I do in any game of Oblivion is level conjuration up to where I can summon a Clannfear. They're fast, deal good damage, knockback baddies, and have a natural reflect damage on them. Also bad guys tend to focus on them so if you need to run. Also I recommend the race with a natural 50% resist magic as the race (Breton I think). Because then you're one Mundane Ring (random drop super item that I believe is automatically dropped by a specific main quest bad guy) from being 100% resistant to magic, a very useful thing.

Class doesnt matter at all. Its just a selection of skills and nothing more.

#1 - Decide what skills you will be using frequently.
#2 - Decide how fast you wanna level up. If you wanna go slowly, you can pick skills you will never use to be your primaries and stay at 1 forever. If you wanna level up fast pick things that get used automatically, or used constantly depending on your play style.

I wanted to be a level 1 mage through the game, so I picked a sign and race to give me super magicka, then I picked combat and thief skills for primaries so I'd never gain a level.
