Surprised no one has responded to this VERY hot deal.

If you have some ReplayTV questions, please feel free to post them here.

Especially because you can't get 50x0 series mostly anywhere anymore....

Do these have ethernet built into them? I was going to get a Tivo with the adapter to add ethernet but might go this route instead.

ReplayTV have built-in ethernet and can share programs via ethernet if you have more than one on your network. Updates via net every night.

After much consideration, I have finally done it to myself, I have bought the 5040 ReplayTv. My Tv life has just taken a dramatic turn for the better.

So let's see, so far this month Anandtech has cost be over $800! Thanks a lot!

I would say a ReplayTV will change how you watch TV completely. My family never could get together at one time to watch a show a lot of times, but now when we can get everyone together we can watch our favorite shows...since we have them and can FIND them. Tapes were messy and hard to access individual shows but now it's easy. Also we never forget to record our favorites. You think "there's nothing on" when you are trapped into watching TV when you have the time to watch, but with ReplayTV that's not an issue. There are TONS of good things to watch, we were always just missing them, forgetting to record them, or tired of the hassle of looking through tapes.

ReplayTV is good since you can use Ethernet and and free program called DVArchive to use your PC to store shows for more recording space. TIVO does not offer this without paying more, plus there are tools available for you to easily burn DVD's of your favorite episodes. Also Poopli (another web resource) gives you a place (with the 50XX series) to find episodes you miss. You can use a web based interface to setup recordings (next day after updates) remotely. I just used that a few weeks ago while on vacation.

It's not cheap but if you like TV shows at all it's a great tool.

ReplayTV rules for tweakers. The community support for it is amazing. You can go to avsforums for general help. You can upgrade the hard drives fairly easily, and the built-in ethernet is great. Poopli has been a great help to get shows you missed.

ReplayTV Pros:
Built-in Ethernet - no phone dialing, can transfer files to PC's.
DVArchive - Program to transfer Replay shows to your PC.
www.poopli.com - a community of ReplayTV users. You enter in a show name, and find if anybody has it. If they do, you just send a request to them and it's on the way.
Price - Can't beat $119.
Upgradability - Accepts standard IDE hard drives

Did I miss anything?

Looks like a sweet deal. I've been wanting to get one of these for awhile but I have a couple of questions. I have DirecTV so I couldn't buy this model could I? I would have to get one with a built in DirecTV reciever? This can only be used with regular old cable? Which wouldn't be bad, except I don't have that anymore. Any help would be cool.

I just ordered one. It looks like a great deal. I'm sick of keeping track of tapes, just to timeshift programming until the kids go to bed.

Do NOT order a refurb from ReplayTV. I got one two weeks ago and it was physically beat all to hell, including a smashed remote control. After two weeks and four phone calls I finally got an RMA so that I can spend $12 shipping it back to them.

However!

1) Get a ReplayTV-it is a geeks dream! You can swap shows on the internet, program it from work via the web, skip commercials, etc.

2) Buy a 40 hour unit from www.buy.com and get a free pair of cordless headphones so that you can watch Mythbusters without disturbing your wife.

3) Upgrade the hard drive yourself with a cheap-o 120-160GB hard drive. DON'T buy one of the bogus upgrade kits on the net.Text

Its worth noting that the 5040 isnt a refurb... and $119 is a steal compared to $149@ buy.com

It's the $299 lifetime service fee that is keeping me form jumping on this. And, $12.95 a month isn't any better.

I purchased a refurb from ReplayTV a few months ago when they had them for $330 (including lifetime activation). My refurb came looking no different than "new" so it is clearly a YMMV experience.

As noted above, the 5040 is brand new and not a refurb. Only the 5080 shows as refurb now. I would have bought this over the 5504 I picked up at e-cost (my second replay). It would have been nicer to get the CA and IVS stuff right out of the box. Wonder how ReplayTV can continue to sell the 5040.. ???

If I buy one do I have to pay for the monthly subscription right away? I want to buy it for someone and not give it to them until June.

No. As a matter of fact, you should automatically get a 3-4 day free trial when you first connect it. However, after that trial period, you either pay for the subscription fee (monthly/lifetime) or it becomes a doorstop. The bottom line is that the system is concerned more about when you first connect it and not so much about when you bought it.

Yes you can change. A lot of people I know pay the monthly fee, then do the HD upgrade trick. If successful (which it always is), then they will pay the lifetime activation. I think that they want to make sure they don't screw up the unit and lose out on the lifetime activation fee.

I've read through lots of info but I still can't find an answer to this question.

What do you do if you have digital cable?

Can the ReplayTV completely replace the digital box from the cable company? If not, is it possible for it to control the box somehow? I want a ReplayTV bad.. but if it's not compatible with digital cable it won't work for me..

My Tivo came up with the green screen of death yesterday and was unable to repair itself. On the way home from the grocery store I convinced my wife we should get one if the Tivo can't fix itself. I want it for the ease of pulling off programs and intregration with XBMC. The whole way home I was thinking, "Please don't be fixed, please don't be fixed..."

Got home and rebooted it and we're still getting the green screen. ReplayTV here I come!

Hopefully someone will want to buy my upgraded Tivo and try to fix it. It's got a 100-120GB drive in it and probably just needs to be reformatted and the software reloaded, but my wife doesn't need to know that. Maybe I can get $70 shipped from FS/T or something.

Good thinking, stick with monthly fee, upgrade HD if it's successful THEN pay for lifetime.
