Yep, there's software out there to dump the video files off over a network. I recorded Apollo 13 at high quality and the movie file was 6gb. Pulling that over a network took a LONG time as the ReplayTV's ethernet isn't very fast for some reason. I'm mainly using this replaytv to record and dump tv shows I watch and then I'll burn them to dvd.

How long would you guess a 2 hour movie took to dump onto a PC? ..and how did you record a 6gb file onto a 4.7 gb dvd?

I don't know exactly how long it took, but it took a LONG time. I'm thinking 3 hours or so, but I could be wrong.

I haven't burned a dvd yet, I'm probably going to have to reduce the quality a LOT to get it to fit and that won't be worth it. I'm just going to fire up FCP and see what happens.

I just picked up a ReplayTV 5040 for $179.99 open box today at Best Buy. Along with the receipt 2 $50 rebates printed out. I hope that I can get both of them, if I send in copies of the receipt stating that it was an open box.

If not, oh well.

I did go check out Circuit City and see if they had any open boxed 5040's..they did...$249.99...geez!

I also picked up an open box ReplayTV 5040 at BB today, and got the CSR to drop the price from $179.99 to $149.99. That means after the 3 $50 rebates, one from BB and two from Sonic Blue, I got it for sales tax... Unfortunately the UPC has been messed up so if anyone has a scan of one please PM me! TIA

What are direct stream record machines (UTV, DirecTivo) and how do they differ from stand alone Replay or Tivos?

if you were using DVArchive or ReplayPC to pull the file off it will be slow if you don't change the default speed...both programs limit the download speed to around 614 kb/s...you can change this so that there is no limit, in which case the replay seems to be able to send files at about 2.8 MB/s

the reason for this limit is that the replays were not designed to download files at this high of a speed (not needed for streaming or to send/receive) and if you are trying to watch a recorded show, record a show and download video at the same time there is a fairly good chance it will crash the replay...but if you're smart about when you download big files you can turn off the limit and grab the files in a matter of minutes

I have an old replayTV 3010(?) with a 2nd hrive drive. The picture quality is not perfect but then my cable co does not have great service either ... But replay is far better than tivo (think cartoons for menus) and it is the only way to watch most programs.

Anyone have a copy of the first sonic blue rebate? The one on the link says good from january first...I got mine in december. If I am not mistaken there was a 50 dollar rebate for that time period in december also. Thanx....

Sony Tivo's are often available at local Sony Factory Outlets - esp. satellite equipment which are near impossible to get these days.

Bump: I am still in need of a 5040 upc scan if anyone has one. TIA!

You do realize that you won't see one posted, right?

If they post their UPC, they lose out on their rebate, you having cashed in on it.

Just go back to the store, and have them mark "Open Box" on the receipt, Sonic Blue has been willing to give rebates for those in the past.

Nice deal. Picked up a open box for $269.99, got to the register and was given another 10% off so ~$250 out the door. Subtract the rebates and final cost is $100.

There was one more open box at the Maplewood, MN Best Buy as of about 6pm yesterday.

Needless to say AVSforum.com is the place for detailed info about this and other unit(s).

i bought one a while ago on the same deal, it's definately something to geek out on, not something you want to pick up idly TiVo seems more that type of thing IMHO

I setup scheduled recordings and d-load them to my PC then conver them to a format that's editable and burn them to SVCD.

voila a season of Farscape/Stargate/Enterprise/TNG that I can play on my DVD player or loan out

It's fun, though it's debatable whether I really need another hobby.... ah well the editing gives me a chance to catch up on music listening I guess.

Though I love it the unit has it's drawback and I consider it a work in progress. i advise you to be fully informed before buying it.

How do you get a price of $179? Was it a box that didn't have the UPC on it ? (From your follow on statements about sending in the rebates, I am guessing that it was.) I called around and found an open box for $269 (the same as someone else here stated), but I find it hard to believe that I might even be able to come close to the $179 (or let alone the $149 price). I was just curious if there was a special magic word that I could use or something like that.

Anybody have the older 2800-T rebate form without the "not valid at BB" exception

Since it doesn't look like second rebate is valid at BB anymore, order it online at Goodguys.com for

$299 - $100 MIR - $25 Coupon = $174 shipped and NO TAXES

Use ebates for another 2%

Mine was an open box return and was priced at $179.99. I argued with the csr a few minutes about it being opened and he went to a manager who ok'd the $149.99 price just to get rid of it. I was able to get another UPC also, I am not sending the serial number portion of the UPC so I could have used any 5040 UPC. They didn't ask for it, I'm not sending it....

I do have a copy of the original 2800T rebate form that says nothing about BB if anyone needs it just PM me, I'll post it on my server.

Alluu: you have a PM.

FYI - If you purchased at Besy Buy and do not include the entire UPC/Serial Number/Model Number label or copy SonicBlue will call you before they approve your rebate to verify the serial. I called yesterday and asked since the BB rebate forms that print at the register do not require or include a place to write the serial number on the form. Both of the SonicBlue manufacturer rebate forms asks for the serial. TheCSR sad SonicBlue will NOT process your rebate without the serial number. However, in your case this is probably not an issue because if you purchased a unit with the label missing more than likely the previous owner has already sent in the rebate and you would not qualify anyway.

Ok... here's what I'm thinking to make the most out of this deal.. (does it sound good?)

- Call Goodguys and price match the BB after rebate price.
(hopefully getting the no tax and free shipping)

- Use the 2 Replay TV forms to get $100 back
- This should allow me to get a non-open box for $149 Shipped.

Has anyone tried to pricematch over the phone with goodguys? It works fine with staples.

Partly I get around this by using the channel guide to find shows instead of flipping, and partly by having it set up so I can use my regular tv remote when I want to quickly go from channel to channel. I would advise giving the replay more of a chance before rushing to return it.
Ditto. I don't NEED to channel surf anymore, I always have shows on that I want to watch. If I don't have anything recorded, I use the channel guide.

One good tip is - if you want to watch something live but you want something else to watch during the commercials, you can use the "jump" button to go back and forth between the live show and a recorded show instantaneously, no channel changing delay. I always keep an extra "Simpsons" recorded to watch during football games.

Edit: oh, and PVRs HAVE to have the delay when changing channels because they have a buffer of recorded material for time-shifting purposes. You never watch anything truly "live" on a PVR, there's always a 1-2 second delay. You'll notice this if you try to use a separate source for audio or if you turn the same channel on in another room.

Does anyone by chance have the 2800-T rebate form that doesn't show the Best Buy restriction on it. I bought a unit before Christmas and was going to submit the three rebates but when I went to go and check the 2800-T rebate, I noticed that they change the form. Must have happened this past weekend as it used to not show the Best Buy stipulation. If anyone has the prior one without that showing, please send me a PM to let me know. Thanks.
