Restructuring.

Replay has decided to not make their own replay boxes anymore...some people are trying to make it seem like they are getting ready to go out of business. NOT TRUE. They are actually going to be just like TiVO in that they provide the service and software upgrades while other companies like Panasonic provide the hardware.

Tivo doesn't make their own hardware either, they have Philips & Sony make it for them.

In fact the replay move is smart for them to focus on what they do best--the service and software and skip things like building the hardware boxes and selling them directly. They have said that they will be around to provide the service a long time and others such as Panasonic and some new manufacturers are going to deal with the hardware side of it.

It is sort of like Disney trying to make vcrs for their VHS tapes and then saying..."you know, I bet panasonic & sony could do a better job of this..."

And for the record, Amazon sells this 60 hour Replay model for $800!

This Mercata powerbuy is amazing!

Is it just me, or does that rebate form say 10/1/00 to 11/30/00? In which case this deal just got a whole lot less hot. I could be wrong though.

On the picture of the rebate form that they have on Mercata, it says through 11/31/00, but on the main page it says 12/31/00. Whats the deal? Anyone know which is correct? Could be a great deal if the rebate still works.

dogman111 - Here's a link without the nasty session ID, Replay TV3060

BTW - Your eBates URL has a referral in it, you may want to edit that out since it's against forum rules the last time I checked.

I bought the ReplayTV 3030 for $219, I'm wondering if I should keep it or sell it?

For the record, dogman111's third message down is a cut&paste from a message by hardin on My-Coupons.

It isn't nice to blantly steal someone's work and not give credit. He didn't change a WORD!

The rebate is good through 12/30/00. You can download it on the www.ReplayTV.com site. Click on "Special Offers". This is a great price, but I am not as confident that they will be around long enough to pay you the rebate as Dogma is. With less than 30,000 subscribers, none of whom pay them a monthly fee, they will need to find more partners quickly to keep the doors open.

I think these Recordable TV devices are way overpriced. They do have features but retail price of $600? That's crazy to think that people would pay that. Of course I know that nobody here would ever pay retail for anything. At $375, this item is still overpriced. I suggest not buying it. The less you buy the lower the price goes, despite what Mercata leads you to believe.

I bought the replay 3030 three weeks ago for $ 320.00, five days later they came out with their announcement, you have to assume that the financial situation is dire if they couldn't wait until AFTER the Christmas buying season. Now the 60 minute version has dropped drastically, I bet that Mercata doesn't want to be left holding the bag on these units.

I played it the same way and sold mine off quick. I didn't want an expensive doorstop so I opted out and will buy a TIVO if I want this capability after the dust settles. Or wait till your local cable company offers a set-top box that does the same thing, which is what Replay wants to start doing. These boxes are worthless without the downlaoded schedule/clock information.

I think most of the positive reinforcement you read are people trying to ease the pain or wishful thinking. Maybe at best they will continue to offer the service but at a charge. I think that would have to involve a change of hands to avoid the legal problems of trying to charge people that you told a service would be free as an incentive to purchase.

DealyDo--

I appreciate your comments, but I have to respectfully disagree. The Replay announcement was made at the appropriate time for Replay.

ALL that is happening is that they are more closely aligning their business model to that of TiVo, as dogman pointed out. This is SMART business--and the only way they were going to be able to compete with TiVo. They are simply going to let other manufacturers make the hardware and license their software (which I feel in most areas is superior to TiVo's software). Like I said, this is SMART, because the last thing people want is another set-top device when they've already got two or three (VCR, DVD, cable box, etc.). DVR is definitely a technology that would benefit from being incorporated into one of these other devices (even the TV itself). All of these devices will use ReplayTV's (or TiVo's) software. The nice thing about these DVRs is that they are basically computers, which can be completely updated to take advantage of new/changed features. In that sense these boxes will continue to stay "up to date" via software upgrades.

That said, it stands to reason that Mercata is clearing these out because they've been discontinued. That's what any store will do with discontinued product. If I hadn't purchased my 30 hour I would really consider the 60 hour--it's a steal at this price.

ReplayTV has made no statement about discontinuing support and/or service for these units. In addition, they are continuing to support the Panasonic ShowStopper (which Panasonic continues to make and will continue to rely on the ReplayTV service).

Congratulations Dealgod, I won one too. Free hardware and $9.95 month service is the cheapest and safest way to get a PDR. Just 5 days till the contest ends. Get your submissions in now.

luv2chill..it was only made at the appropiate time because they would have gone belly up had they not (running out of cash and just laid off 1/2 their company)...they have a nice technology but even though many people like their product better than tivo, Tivo management has been several steps ahead of replay in financing the company, aligning themselves with business partners and marketing...I hope they survive, but their are no guarantees and several much larger companies than even TIVO are getting into this space.

here is a nice article about some of it

Y'all are definitely entitled to your opinions... However, my personal view on this is that these will never become doorstops. Because they are, in essence, computers, their operating osftware can be updated at any time.

If (and if ReplayTV didn't succeed this would be a likely scenario) TiVo (or some other DVR company if it were to exist a the time) were to buy out ReplayTV, these boxes could probably be converted to the new service without much fuss at all. I agree that without the service these boxes are useless, but I don't think they will ever be without service one way or the other.

According to the article, skeptics think that any company can "slap a hard drive inside a product" and pay programmers to write their own software. I think that is a tad oversimplified. The software is only one component. You've got to have the availability of local access numbers, nationwide content information, marketing, and not to mention well-designed software that's idiot-proof. All that takes a lot of money, and it would be much more cost-effective to license software from a company that specializes in it and already has the majority of market share. We live in a standards-based world. Our markets simply won't support a dozen different producers of incompatible technology.

Now, whether it can even support two is questionable, I admit... but until someone tells me that a ReplayTV box could never be capable of running some sort of modified TiVo software then I wouldn't fret. TiVo wants Replay's customers, believe me. If Replay goes belly-up (though I don't believe that will happen) then I'm sure TiVo will come up with a way to gobble up Replay's customers.

P.S. Of course all of this is speculation and MHO. Feel free to sell off your Replays if you want to. I'll be keeping mine.

ABCBooZe: Certainly you know someone who doesn't live in Florida who might win the Tivo and then give it to you for Christmas.

If anyone who bought the 30 hour Replay dirt cheap at Mercata
last month wants to get rid of it (worried about Replay's
"reorganization" or else wants to buy this 60 hour unit instead)
for around what they paid, please contact me...!

I'll buy it!
