FAQ:
1) Do I need a subscription?
A: No -- it makes a nice dust collector without one.
2): Subscription fee?
A: $12.95/mo; $6.95/mo for each additional unit OR $299 lifetime each.
3) How many tuners?
A: One (but you can watch a recorded program WHILE you record another)
4) Why should I buy one? I can rent one from my cable/satellite company.
A: Yes you can, but add-up the rental fees. If you switch your programming source, you don't have to give it back. Also, after the warranty, you can upgrade the hard drive for more storage capacity. You can also do more, but that goes beyond the scope of answering this question.
5) What if Replay goes out of business? The box becomes useless, right?
A: Could be -- IF Replay goes out of business. IF. Your house could be destroyed IF you're hit by a hurricane (I say while typing this from HOUSTON). More to the point, these guys are owned by big corporate names. It's pretty unlikely.
6) Do these have commercial skip?
A: Not as such -- but there's a feature that's similar to it, and in most cases, close enough.
7) I looked at the website. Do the MIR's apply to the refurbished units also?
A: YES -- look closely in the upper-right corner of the rebate form.
8) Do they actually pay the rebates? How long does it take?
A: Yes. In my experience, 10-12 weeks.
9) What's a ReplayTV? Is it like a Tivo?
A: More or less, but many would say it's superior. More features, no FF commercials, and easier to hack/upgrade.
10) Do you work for these guys?
A: Nope, just a happy customer.
The only downsides I can think of:
* Shipping was FREE for awhile. It's now $12
* You may be charged sales tax. The prices listed above don't factor these in.
