Not good. Poorly handled by Asus and the Chinese authorities and the woman's lawyer. $5,000,000 was a tad high for a starting damages price, IMHO. I might have asked for $10,000. And threatening to go public if payment wasn't made was also a very rookie move.

If we have someone from Asus on these boards I hope they respond. I was just getting ready to pull the trigger on buying an Asus motherboard. And if Asus is doing this, what are the rest of the Chinese doing? If we can't trust our dog food and milk to them can we trust them to build and fix proper computers?

This does NOT inspire confidence.

"Huang Jin, accused by Asus of extortion but released due to insufficient evidence"

ASUS put that girl in jail for ten months with no good reason then except for she was critical about their lousy customer service. Only possible in a country with no independent judiciary system, I guess...

This topic is about a response that a hardware manufacturer gave when their customer complained about quality of ASUS customer service.

@Blain: this is neither OT nor politics.

Wasn't what she did basically blackmail?

"Give me money or I'm going public with information that's going to damage your company."

Now if she originally brought it to court and asked for a settlement, I think she would've been home free, correct?

My first thought is... why isn't this done to people who come up with frivolous lawsuits?

She was released after 10 months due to insufficient evidence

It just seems ASUS made sure that she was kept with no sentence in prison for 10 months.

I'd say this might be just a BEGINNING of story to be honest

have you read TFA? The girl tried to get ASUS to pay 5 millions under the table or threaten to expose the whole deal. ASUS THEN sued for extortion, which was just in my book.

Sucks that the judgment was to harsh though =( If it's in the US most likely this will be a civil case.

I already know Asus has no real support and if they make a mistake they will not fix it, just cover it up.

I had 2 Asus boards and will never buy another Asus product.

Ha the title doesnt seem to line up with the story. And the story doesnt really explain the whole thing either I bet. It sounds to me like she was tossed in jail for blackmail. I believe if you went to a company in the United States and did the same thing. "Give me x dollars or I tell the world you suck" they would call the FBI and setup a sting and bust your ass for blackmail as well. Now if she told them to fix the damn thing or Ill make a stink that is different.

Telling a company that they need to address an issue with their product(s) is fine, possibly even commendable.
Demanding money from a company in exchange for silence over said issue is extortion.
I see no problem here, unless I am missing something.

But it would fall under the catagory of "News" more than "General Hardware".
I see the Mod thought it more of an "Off Topic" item...

Huang and her lawyer, Zhou Chengyu, demanded that ASUS to pay a compensation of five million US dollars, threatening to break the news to the media and take ASUS to court

I emailed Asus and told them I wont be buying from them any longer because of this. Their support does suck as she has stated.
