I am running an xp 2400+. The reason why I am still running skt a is because I am unsure if I will notice a difference in an upgrade since I do not game much and just use my pc for web surfing and office apps as well as ms money. Should I upgrade?

Hello.

I'm still running a Athlon XP 2000+ on a Soyo DRAGON 2 v.2 board using Via's KT-880 chip set and an Abit GeForce4 Ti-4400. I bought the processor way back in 2002 when it was one of the faster options out there. Back then, the chipset to get was Via's KT-660 so it initially ran with the original Soyo DRAGON+ m/b. Times sure have changed...Soyo doesn't even make m/b's anymore, Via isn't considered an "enthusiast" brand anymore and AGP graphics are quickly being phased out.

One thing that hasn't changed is that the Athlon XP's we are still running are useful for many tasks. Upgrades are limited now because there just aren't any m/b's out there with Socket A support, but the processor still performs well enough for internet, e-mail and most business uses. Heck, there are even a ton of great games that still work well within this spec.

Currently, since my new C2D build, my wife is enjoying her very own PC in her home office. She doesn't care that it's outdated by today's standards. All she knows is that it's hers and "it's much faster than the computer she has at work."

basically because it is still useful in many tasks....like for office or just the internet...you don't need an super cpu to surf on the web and typing words in MSWORD.

I had a 1700+ Palomino for the last 5-ish years.
Used in a secondary system till a few weeks ago when i sold it.

Needed something that handled HD better...so the Opty 165 became my secondary system.

I built a socket A with a 2500+ Barton system for my mom a few years ago although it has finally gotten too slow for her(she is a multi-tasking demon, heh).

I'll probably hook her up with an E6300 and ASRock board for her next upgrade so she can reuse her RAM and AGP card.

still have a couple k7s5a's with 1700, a 1.2ghz multi and a 2.3ghz 133 bus chip (i can't even remember what the model is... it was the fastest 133 bus chip) that serve well as a server and homework/browser system (with a hacked 9500 the 2.3 still will play some games)... and a 2.5ghz mobile with a hacked 6800 that the kids' friends still can lan on...

my biggest lament is that that the 1700 will do 2.5ghz in a better mobo...

with a xt850 the 2.5 is still a capable gaming platform... these were a great run of chips...

of course my kids have substantially newer stuff for the serious stuff...

I'm still using Athlons and Durons for my servers and reserve driver, can't beat the bang for the buck (except for the VMware Server, gotta upgrade that once 939 prices drop). My daily driver is an A64.

Got 5 Skt A chips.. only using two

Using an AXP2500 oced to 2.2ghz on an Nforce 2 chipset.. man gotta love that chipset. Had a K7S5A but it died when I missed with my screwdriver (dammit). It was a 950mhz Duron at 1.4ghz, now it's just at 1ghz that runs my Linux server.

My 2500 was actually my encoding machine till i got my A64... it was an awesome chip. Gonna become my server chip when I replace my A64 this Christmas.

I just upgraded from a socket A tbird1.4 cause it nolonger kept up with my gaming.
Good all around cpu, and still works great. Back in 2000 when I bought it, the xp chips came out the next day so I was screwed.

I'm running a Duron 850 mHz. Why? Cause it won't die, and I don't need anything more for what I do with that computer (web surfing, email, etc.). If the motherboard and cpu would both die at the same time, then I'd build something better and faster, I suppose. But I can't justify tossing a working system just to build a new one.

It would be a waste of money to upgrade for those tasks.

I have an XP 2100 OCed to around XP 2400 speeds and am currently in the midst of an upgrade process. My motherboard has died and it gives me an excuse to upgrade. You will notice a difference even in light tasks like web surfing and office apps as the machine will feel snappier, however it won't be mind numbingly faster if you are just using it for those tasks. If you are gaming, editing video or any other CPU intensive task then you will certainly see a noticable difference.

My advice is to sit down in front of another faster machine and see how much different it is. Go to a local computer shop or a friends house and see it first hand and then decide if it is worth the cost to upgrade. I would not be upgrading had it not been for my fried board and the fact that I have recently started to make home movie DVDs and the rendering time is sooo sloooow. Hell, we still have PIIs at work we web surf on with no problems and I am typing this on a PIII 1GHZ laptop that works just fine.

Have an 1700+ in my internet box, just runs 24/7, slow as nothing else but i guess thats thanks to the 5400rpm drive and 256mg of ram
Anyways it does whats needed and thats provide net around the house.

Good for you socketAers! You stick by your CPU! Its still a viable gaming platform imo for 2400+XP's and up. I bet theres still somone sitting with the good old 2500+ mobile as their main rig, and its still better than half the other computers out there.

I hate socket A but the performance of its CPU's cant be denied, they were pretty decent.

heh sounds like a lot of ppl still use skt a.. good powerhorse if i ever saw one.

even my 1ghz duron can run fs2004 with ease. my 2500 is up for css and the likes of that too.

I'm replacing the last Socket A I still own (Duron 950) with a 754 Sempron next week, since it's been getting much more flaky over the past year and now it's refusing to boot half the time. I'm going to miss it, it was my daily use computer until August 2005 (yeah pathetic, I know), I even got it to play GTA San Andreas... good times... Oh well, geeks.com had a deal on a sempron 2600+ and motherboard for $70 shipped, so I bit.

I still use an AXP 1800+ as my main machine, I really can't justify an upgrade. I only use the machine to browse the net, listen to music and run a few basic apps like Quicken etc. The only reason I have to upgrade is that I want to go to a dual head setup one day and AGP video cards are becoming obsolete. I am just going to keep using it for the time being, it has plenty of life left in it.
