Report: PS3 to sell for $399, cost $494 to make

Merrill Lynch Japan estimates that the machine's main components--namely its Cell chip, RSX, and BD-ROM drive--will cost about 11,000 yen ($101) each. After adding the other electronics that will be used in the PS3, the machine's production cost goes up to 54,000 yen.

Given that Sony's PS3 will face stiff competition from Microsoft's Xbox 360, the chances that Sony will release its console at its production cost is slim. Under the assumption that the Xbox 360 is expected to sell at around $299, Merrill Lynch Japan predicts that Sony will sell each PS3 at the price of 44,800 yen ($410) in Japan and $399 in America. That would mean Sony would suffer a loss of more than 130 billion yen ($1.18 billion) during the first year of the PS3's release.

Does the price change your buying decision?

I hadnt' planned on getting a PS3 at launch because of...

1. The games
2. The price

So this didn't really change my plans, because I figured it would be $400 or so which turned me off right away. I'm going to be picking up an XBox 360 at release however. I'm actually going to pre-order one this weekend since I get paid this week.

Not really - as I'm going to buy both. Mostly for my 8 yr old son (good excuse right? )

I still think the 360 is going to be the better console. I liked the xbox over my ps2 by far. I quit playing the ps2.

Aren't you waiting till Microsoft has HD-DVD in its second release of Xbox 360s?
DVD is just not gonna to be capable in much future-proofing

Fixed to meet my criteria

Nope. I'm buying xbox360 to play games, not to watch movies. When the time comes, I will pick up a HD-DVD player I guess. I don't really plan on getting all my older movies in HD-DVD format again just to have 2 copies of the same movie. I think it will take me a while to get into the whole HD-DVD thing.

But who knows, I might get a HD-DVD player as soon as they come out . But that won't make me wait to get an xbox 360. I love games and thats why I'm buying the 360, to game, not watch movies.

Well if they start releasing HD content (movies and tv shows) on blue-ray discs and the first gen players are more than the PS3, then I would think about buying the PS3.

I thought PS3 is goning to have some online service as well
However the current Xb0x 360 's online service seems quite good to me

Either way, the crappy UK boardband here won't help much for either of the consoles. Doesn't really matter here for us

Bwahahahahaha!

Sony and MS have each dug themselves into a huge hole right out of the gate with this silly "specs" war.

PS3 not having a hard drive is REALLY going to affect the online service IMO. I mean, xbox live (at first) updated a lot. The PS3 won't even be able to do this becuase you don't have anywhere to store the updates. I'm REALLY trying not to be a fanboy, but I just don't understand some of the sony decisions (like not including a hard drive!).

I don't know about that. DVD's are pretty much saturated memory space for games
Plus since Xbox supports HDTV, the size of movies, textures are going to be using much space on the game media

May be they would have HD-DVD games soon. In that case, it would be very unfair to early adoptors

I don't know whether DVD-DL would have much

Something that leaned me towards PS3 is their 1080p HDTV support, while Xbox360 only supports 720p

They will be. Expect average price for a decent stand-alone player to be around $1000 or more.

Remember, with a gaming system it is gonna be kinda sh!tty how well these guys will perform. Xbox and definitely PS2 have never received any rave reviews about their quality of dvd playback.

I think sony suppose you to put your own large capacity HDD in, because they think bundling a 20GB HDD is not going to have much help. They are selling 2 versions I think, with HDD they bundle Linux as well

When PS2 was out it was praised of its high quality DVD playback which matched $400 high quality DVD players. However the region code restriction was killing it

remember though that EVERY xbox game will be 720p, while only a select few ps3 games will be 1080p

There are already a few HD games on xbox ... Soul Calibur 2, Dragons Lair 3D.

Just because stuff is HD doesn't mean its going to take up more space. I mean look at PC games. Their resolution is as good as HD stuff pretty much and they are still on CD's (multiple CD's though). 9GB is enough for a game, and if its not, we'll start to see games on maybe 2 DVDs, which will be 18GB, which will be more than enough.

I didn't bring that. I only heard that the hardware of PS2 did a good job in the quality department from others

I see. But in multiple discs case the game would have to be "installed" instead. No one want to swap discs during game play

PS3 will kill Xbox360...but it will cost you. Games are supposedly going to be $60-$70 too.

PS2 games (and by that I mean exclusive titles to the PS2) were always leaps and bounds better than Xbox titles, except for maybe Ninja Gaiden. I also think the regular DVD format will eventually hurt Xbox360.......but it will sell a bajillion copies because people want to play Halo with thumbsticks.

Also, I think Sony has a spot for a 2.5" hdd (laptop drive) to go, they just aren't packaging one. The 20gb Xbox360 drive is pretty weak, too, but it's nice to have from the get go.

yeah, ps2 always sucked at DVD playback... and after a few years it sucks at playing games too. I hope MS and Sony don't skimp on the DVD lasers this round...
