Report: PS3 to sell for $399, cost $494 to make

There will be plenty of people buying Xbox360 and PS3 the day they are released. People can and will be able to afford these systems. The hype machine hasn't even started yet...there are plenty of casual gamers who don't even KNOW about the new systems that are less than a year away! Launch games are usually not worth it, though, in my opinion. If Xbox360 was going to launch with Ninja Gaiden 2, I'd be all over it already (well, NG2 might not even be on Xbox360 according to IGN, but I digress). I remember PS2 launched with like...Summoner and a slew of other games that are largely forgettable. I can't even name some of the first games that Xbox launched with. If PS3 promised a Devil May Cry 4 and a Squareenix game, I'd probably cream my pants.

It's usually more prudent to wait. I for one am rather disappointed that EVERY launch title for both systems seem to be FPS games. I don't understand how FPS games got so popular on consoles...I've always prefered the 3rd person style of Ninja Gaiden/DMC, and those games sell the best, but apparently devs are convinced otherwise.

PS3 price will most likely match or be slightly higher than X360.

Merrill Lynch Japan estimates the price of the Cell processor at $101 while other analysts are estimating a price of $30, so it is possible that instead of a $494 cost for manufacturing, the cost could be as little as $420. This means that Sony could still sell the units at the $360 that has been specified earlier with only a $60 loss or match Xbox360 at $299 and take a loss of $121.

Also keep in mind that the Merrill Lynch estimate conveniently guesstimates 11,000 yen ($101) for the PS3's main components and you should come to realize that the true cost is anybody's guess.

Being almost a year away, take all this pricing info with a grain of salt. Right now our best guess for the retail price on the PS3 is $399 ±100.

Either way, PS3 will have to launch with some solid titles as I believe Gates has said that they want Halo 3 to come out the day that PS3 does.

So $300 for an xbox360, that comes w/a 20Gb hard drive, a wireless network adapter, a gaming controller, a microphone/speaker to communicate online with, and HD outputs is close to a top of the line PC in price?

and how much did that bigass HDTV cost? you're not gonna get too far playing games unless you have some output or another and by the way, the FEAR beta looked fantastic on my crapass computer. im sure if i actually had money to pump into my rig, it'd look even better
