Sony used the ps3 to push blu-ray. That is most of the reason it cost so much at launch.

Doesn't affect me much as my Internet is very reliable but all things equal I would prefer not to have it.

That Ortho guy seems like such an asshole I would be inclined to skip 720 on principle to a very small degree.

MS should tell him to STFU.

Plus the PS2 internals. Regardless of the reasons, the high price was something that held it back for quite awhile. And by the time the prices came down to about equal between it and the Xbox 360, Xbox Live was the clear winner in terms of online functionality. If PSN+ had come out with the launch, it might have swayed people more over to the Sony side, but lack of things like cross game chat and an intuitive messaging / friend list / invite system really held it back.

Yeah using the PS3 to push Blu-Ray cost them on the console front. It helped them win the format war but looking at adoption rates there I kind of wonder if it was a mistake for them to push the BRD format at the cost of gaming market share. Different thread on that though I suppose.

My internet is constantly on on my 360 and I never move it from the tv stand. This product is compatible with my situation.

Same here, but I am still leaning towards the PS4.

Although I have all of this generation consoles, next gen I will chose only one. And in no small part will streaming and media center capabilities be a consideration.

I love how when people read "must be internet connected to use" it automatically means always on connection. It may also mean that the device must be registered to a XBL account, or that games require activation via XBL account before they run, or that a XBL account is required for general operation, even for offline mode (prior activation). Any number of things.

I think people need to take a deep breath and just wait for the official announcments. I think I'm going to drown in all the conjecture and rumors that come from both users and writers.

It's like yelling "shark" in amity. People are going to panic regardless of what the truth is.

Steam isn't always-on though. If your connection drops, it won't kick you out of a single payer game. It also only requires you to periodically log in. So you can launch and play games offline, such as if you're on a laptop.

This. I have satellite internet, which has a bandwidth cap, high latency, and somewhat frequent down time. I have no problem with how Steam or Starcraft 2 handle things, since I can use offline mode. OTOH, I'll never buy Diablo 3 because of the always-on requirement. The same would be true with the next Xbox if these rumors are true.

It's too bad that we have to wait so long to hear what MS has to say about these rumors. That's just going to allow for 6 more weeks of leaks and rumors to build bad press for the nextbox. But maybe they will surprise all of us and hit it out of the park. I know that with my gaming time dwindling, I will most likely have to be a one console gamer next gen, so I want to see what MS is doing.

Personally I don't care what MS is doing. Bungie is delivering a new game to Sony's system and I can't play Sony's exclusives anywhere else so I have pretty much no reason to buy another xbox system, not even for Halo anymore.

It's funny, because I tell myself I would hate to lose out on Halo and Gears, but I play through the story once, play a little online, and then move on to the next game. I am pretty sure I would be just fine without them. The only saving grace for MS is the fact that my group of friends will most likely be jumping onto their next console.

Yeah I know what you're saying. Though most people I know locally who are gamers and I've played with online all seem to be going with the PS4. I guess they saw enough good news and info to sway them.

I just feel like the way Halo 4 ended was a fitting end for the whole thing. I have a feeling deep down that they are going to ruin it by trying to keep it going. I may be wrong and I hope I am because the Halo universe is really interesting to me and was well done.

Who knows though, in a couple years I might just have both lol.

Everyone can say "oh I liked what Sony said about the PS4 so I am going with that" all day until MS comes out and says things they want to hear even more. I think what really will decide who wins this battle will be what they actually deliver on.

Nah, these are the people who have their 360s sitting around collecting dust or have sold them already. They're set on this one right now.

Like I said, in a few years we might have both. Who knows.

I was thinking about buying a next gen console right away, but I kind of think I might wait and see what they actually deliver on. I am a little skeptical of Sony, because they have promised stuff and never delivered on it before.

I'm skeptical of Microsoft because of all the rumors that are the exact opposite of what I want to hear. Moving to subscription model, always on internet, possible forced kinect integration etc.

I sincerely hope these are all not going to happen and they remain just rumor and not based on fact.

i just want to link this again because people are taking this "always on" thing completely out of context IMO.

http://www.vgleaks.com/durango-xdk/

look at the last picture, 2nd paragraph.

read where it talks about "always on, always connected" and everything surround it.

to me, that reads as in "if you have your durango plugged in with network connection, you will be able to get updates and installs behind the scenes whether you are there or not".

ridiculous how this has turned into the whole "YOU NEED INTERNET TO PLAY GAMES!!!" by all the morons out there.

I just wish that MS would come out with a comment like. "any future consoles will not require a Internet connection to play all games". That would quiet this down.

Yet it does not discount the premise that the working theory of "you need internet to play games" should be discounted out of hand. To call people morons for debating, discussing, and showing frustration at this key point (confirmed or not) is not your place.

Too bad you missed this

Regarding the console's rumoured "always-online" component, Thurrot reiterated what we knew already - that previous Microsoft design documents have mentioned the feature.

"Looking at some of the stuff I got a long time ago, it actually says 'must be internet-connected to use' in the notes," Thurrot claimed. "And that's all I have, but it does say that."

Recently-leaked internal documentation dated to last year referenced the console's "always on, always connected" design.

i saw that, but how do we know that wasn't in the notes for a development kit? why assume that it means retail versions that are months from hitting the shelves?

"thats in the notes" ... notes of what?

also stated that it was from a "long time ago". who knows what has changed since then?

I'll likely be giving a <^> to MS this next generation. I made the mistake of getting a 360 before PS3. I won't be making that mistake again. Sony seems the be the only one not intentionally telling their customers to blow themselves and swallow.

Do they even have a name for it? How bout the GoWHaloCoDM4Box?

So does that mean we won't have to listen to your bullshit next gen, or are you going to keep up with your trolling?

ms hasn't told their customers anything about the new xbox, this is 100% speculation and rumor.

At least half of what I say has to be false before its trolling...

There is nothing false about the well known stagnation of gaming this generation caused single handedly by too big for their britches publishers (EA, Activision, cough) and the over proliferation of record profit chasing casual mainstream catering dime a dozen cheap thrill PC style military shooters infecting the console industry to the detriment of all other genres and franchises.
