Total douche...I know people who live out in the sticks somewhere and have no broadband. They go to their relatives house in the city once a month and when they do, they sometimes have to bring their PC or consoles to get updates.

Also yes, if the mobile reception is shit I won't pay money for a mobile phone. Why have one if I can't use it where I'm at?

Forget the sticks. I have a friend that lives one mile outside of town and he didn't get broadband until just recently. Only option they had before that was a 3G modem, which was expensive and had a tight data cap.

Well, I guess this guy's comments all but confirms it. I'm sure he'll be getting deluged by every gaming publication big and small today. Anybody know what sauce would go good with my hat?

PS: I've been having problems with my internet all morning.

Especially the when PS4 news is positive after positive and most importantly it is intended as a no-nonsense gaming platform first and foremost, not some change-your-living-room-into-something-else crap.

The only thing that makes me cringe was some article on Kotaku I read a couple of weeks ago, where some Sony bigwig was on record saying "You'll love using your real name as your chat handle with the ps4". Ummm, no, no I wont, thanks.

I think the article did go on to say that you might still be able to just use handles, instead of just your name. But, it was definately a wtf moment.

Considering the popularity of Steam on PCs... I don't see the issue for an "always on" console.

With the PS4 you have a choice to use an anon or your real name. They said that in their initial PS4 conference.

steam is childs play number wise compared to consoles.

anyone using steam has to have the internet in order to use steam.

anyone playing consoles does not have to have the internet in order to use it.

huge difference.

Steam isn't always-on though. If your connection drops, it won't kick you out of a single payer game. It also only requires you to periodically log in. So you can launch and play games offline, such as if you're on a laptop.

Steam hasn't entirely escaped controversy though as some boxed games require it. A lot of people hate that.

The problem with always-on is it doesn't seem to provide any net benefit to the consumer. As we've learned with SimCity, Diablo III, and the PSN outsge, a whole host of things can go wrong. Imagine that month PSN was down that nobody could use the console at all. People would be pissed. Connection issues seem to happen more often than not on the server end. Of course there's all sorts of sinister things it could be used for such as usage tracking, targeted advertising, and blocking used games.

The thing about this is Steam has escaped most criticism for this though. When Starcraft 2 was coming out and Blizzard stated you had to periodically log in to Battle.net (once every 30 days or something) people freaked. "Omg DRM! What if my internet is down for a year! Omg!" Yet Steam requires this feature and nobody yells about it.

But, like I speculated earlier in the thread, MS probably has this to keep a reign on the developer boxes. If these got into the wrong hands, it probably wouldn't take someone smart very long to circumvent the disc protection or just a copy of the OS / bios that allows you to run unsigned content. That would be a major problem if I just had to flash my MB to play pirated games / modified games on XboxLive. I'm sure they could ban those consoles, but that takes time to find them and that person has already ruined the experience for a lot of people.

Steam has offline mode. Log in once, turn offline mode on and if you have no internet the games you have installed will work.

Someone tell Adam that all vacuum cleaners cleaners require electricity, not just one brand, and there is a completely legitimate reason why all vacuums require electricity. If only one vacuum brand required electricity, and only did so for artificial reasons, then the comparison would be valid.

I might have to eat my words.

This is Microsoft Studios’ Creative Director Adam Orth lol.

Kind of funny, but trolling everyone who lives in rural America probably isn't a good business strategy.

Looks like just last year only 60% of Xbox 360s were online. So they are basically telling 40% of their customers to "f*** off."

It would really surprise me is microsoft when though with this for the simple fact that their competitors are not..... but we won't really know till some official annoucements are made...

But you can sorta see that MS was trying this out on the current Xbox, for indie games and games that don't have there liscenses matched up to the system they are on (think repalceing an xbox, and keeping the hard drive from the prior system)...

Indie games are a competely different situation. Indie games require an internet connection as a way to get around not having an ESRB rating.

Wow didn't know what was the case(reason) with Indie games (interesting).. as i was under the impression that the ESRB was technically a "voluntary" process.... (More for retail approval etc.)

If they live in a rural area without internet, they wouldn't be following him on twitter in the first place. So, he just making fun of people who can't even see they are being made fun of. No harm done.

The ESRB is completely voluntary but your game will never be sold without a rating, or an AO (Adult Only) rating.

They aren't legally required to use it or anything, but the ESRB is a self-regulatory organziation, and as such, all the big console manufacturers have agreed to abide by it.

That guy is a dick, and as much as I loved my 360 (and am eventually going to buy another), I will be moving from a PS triple to a PS quad for the next generation.

Some people who might not have a reliable internet home line, use it at work, school, or on a smartphone.

Alot of times all I have is a 3g stick and I'm not wasting my cap just to plays games that should be playable. Although it seems sony is leaving this up to each individual developer I'd feel alot better if the PS4 completely removed the capability.

I guess I'll likely eat crow and buy a Wii-U............ ffs.
