The Republican House Majority Whip Steve Scalise attended and spoke at a EURO conference. The European-American Unity and Rights Organization is a well known white supramacist hate organization. There seems to still exist in the south lots of hate and bigotry and politicians are still catering to the racists and the samller politicians are more bold with their support while once they are more well known and powerful they are more restrained but still give tacit support to the racists and their ideology and political platforms.

Yes Robert Byrd was worse being an actual member of the KKK, but there is no room in politics for the likes of Steve Scalise. He has to go.

Guy spoke to some group 12 years ago... he hasn't since? Gee... wonder why. Maybe he doesn't stand by them.

It smells like a witch hunt, or not letting go of some relics of the past.

To use Obama's standard excuse, perhaps Scalise did not know EURO was a hate group until he read it in the paper.

I disagree. By speaking at their conference, you are basically giving them your support.

Yep.
If he's so dumb he couldn't figure out that the very name of the organization should have clued him he should be kicked for that. Even if he wasn't in sympathy with the EURO's goals he effectively gave him his stamp of credibility in return for votes.

Nope, nope, nope.

A politician with a stamp of credibility? Not buying that.

Maybe we could dump him right after we get rid of the tax cheats and felons.....

You know all these back and forth chatter about the South is still racist or the South is not racist anymore makes me start wondering if some areas have progressed more than other areas and that the South is not monotonous as far as equality and race relations.

It is not but neither is the north a perfect paradise. My Mom's cousin, from Illinois, was in town last weekend. He used some racist terms that I haven't heard for years. Posting them would get me a vacation faster that the "s" word.

Here is my question. I want to be very careful how its worded. I do not support groups like this.
How many people on this forum would or could lose their job if you were speaking there and it was obvious who you were and where you worked.
Why is it a different standard for politicians?

Plenty of people in positions where character and public perception is important. If the CEO from just about any company were to give a speech to their organization, the public & board of directors would be demanding their resignation. Not sure if you're aware, but not everyone is held up to the same standards as everyone else. Hopefully you realize that we don't need to hold a McDonald's burger flipper up to the same standards as a surgeon or commercial air pilot.

Ok. I'll play along.

Obama currently has conversations with Iranian fascists and Cuban communists, and supported the corrupt Afghan President and his cronies.

SO WHAT? Communication can make people see things your way. NOT communicating is a easy way to NOT get your point across.

I support communication with all people of the world. I also support talking to terrorists, murderers and even people on Anandtech forums, which we all know can be the worst of all.

Sheesh, did the dear Congressman donate money to the group? DId he speak out in favor of the group? If so, he has some explaining to do.

Whoa there, that was my point DrPizza. All of us are bound by morality clauses.

I think the difference is Obama has to deal with those people. Flat out ignoring them is not always the best course of action. This guy on the other hand chose to go speak at their convention and in my book unless you are getting up there trying to get them to change, that is speaking out for that group.

"We don't associate... with people who associate with... racist people"... I get it.

I don't know what their crimes are exactly. Are they like a white version of Black Panthers? I wonder what their activities have been recently. What did the Congressman know at the time, why hasn't he been back in 12 years? Maybe he learned about them and said "!@#$ them".

He probably takes their money. He spoke to them once... so they have his "support".
To what end?

What could possibly happen by their association? Return of segregation... our government passes racist legislation? I don't think so.

He hasn't returned to them. This tells me he does not stand with them. If he publicly denounces them and/or their cause... that's good enough for me. Oppression is not coming back. Let's not pretend that's even on the table.

A lot of black and brown people would argue that it never really left.

I see this as a baby step of what we're seeing with ISIS. I'm not greatly concerned that a politician spoke to them once more than a decade ago, but civilization is always a kilometer wide and a millimeter thick, and it's worth emphasizing to him and to others that this is not alright. (I'm making assumptions about EURO here as I've never heard of them, but I don't think I'm too far out on a limb.)

The more important question to me is, does he still continue to talk to these types of groups? Does his legislative history show that he has pushed for anti black policies? Basically does his actions jive with the accused rhetoric?

Personally, for me this is a non story.

We don't. The burger flipper would get let go. The CEO would get a bonus. :awe:
