Republicans' Darrell Issa won't seek re-election

So say NBC's sources, at least.

He's in California, so his departure will only matter so much... but because it's California, this means there's a real chance a Democrat will take his seat. And this comes on the back of fellow California Republican Ed Royce retiring.

Combine this with previous news and there are a lot of veteran Republicans who are conveniently declining to seek re-election or retiring in 2018. It's as if they're facing a massive public backlash and would rather quit than lose a reelection bid (or serve under an unpopular President).

One problem for the GOP in how these retirements are coming is that a lot of these guys said they would run again and were raising cash thereby scaring potential successors out of the field. Those people could have spent time raising money and getting their names out there which Dems have been doing for months at least.

If things continue this way with house Rs slowly deciding to bow out the odds of Ds taking back the house go up a lot IMO.

That's a good point. Many of these announcements are coming relatively late, so alternate candidates will often be relative unknowns, inexperienced or both.

Also something to note: Issa has been one of Trump's most dutiful lackeys, supporting him in virtually every capacity. It's rather telling that he's backing out despite (or rather, because of) all that public support.

Highly doubful. He's from behind the Orange Curtain. His district consists of much of Orange County CA, Camp Pendleton Marine Base and Oceanside: Camp Pendleton's military town in north San Diego County.

This area is a pocket of very strong republicanism. And not the "kinder gentler" version. Alt-right Trump supporters. Much of this county was populated by white flight from LA county.

Issa retiring may actually drain the swamp a bit. Although it will probably return to its previous level with his replacement. Hopefully I'll be proven wrong.

IIRC his district went to Clinton by 7+ points and he secured re-election by less than half a point.

Backing what K1052 said -- Issa barely won his 2016 re-election, and that was before the full effect of the Trump shipwreck became known. If he could barely win when Trump was at his zenith (i.e. before he would invariably fail to meet expectations), he probably doesn't stand much of a chance in 2018. Certainly not when Trump's policies screw veterans.

Not all of that pro-Trump base is white. I have in-laws who are Vietnamese-Chinese in OC and for some reason they are massively pro Trump (and there are quite a few like-minded.) I have no idea how they conflate their Saigon Airlift arrival with Trump's anti-immigration stance, but whatever...he is like a walking talking embodiment of the American Dream to them.

Wow, boat is going down, he dedicated himself to investigating the Obama administration zealously, becoming a key player in the Benghazi investigation. He used to own the Viper company, he is a millionaire from South California.

Trump took almost 1/3 of the Latino vote. More than Romney by a few points. If you look past the leftist propaganda he really isn't anti-minority, just anti-illegal immigration and against a wide open flood gate of mid eastern anti-LGBT religious conservatives... it isn't really a terrible stance to have on those subjects.

Issa only won his district by less than 1 point in 2016, which was a decent year for the GOP. He's retiring because this is going to be a wave year for dems and he knows he's very unlikely to win. I expect the seat to go to a dem this time.

He is resolutely anti-minority, and your lies will never change this. Who's the one who was calling for a total ban on all Muslims entering the US during his campaign? Who's the one who makes false claims about the scope of the problems Mexican illegal immigrants bring? Who's the one who's mysteriously reluctant to condemn attacks by white people, including white supremacists, but leaps on Muslim attacks and curiously devotes hours of attention to attacking black protests?

And it's hilarious that you're still championing the lie that Trump is somehow pro-LGBT given that every policy he has instituted on that front is designed to discriminate against them.

LOL you say this about a President who tweeted about banning transgendered people from the military for basically reasons.

If there was a real problem of cost with trans soldiers then I understand where they are coming from. The numbers I've seen don't support a ban, but maybe there is more than just the numbers I've seen. It isn't like Trump is fighting tooth and nail to harm LGBT's. Why do you want anti-LGBT religious cons to come to America from the mideast? Are YOU anti-LGBT?

He didn't ban all Muslims, that is a plain lie. He did talk about stopping Muslims from coming in until things get straightened out with the vetting process, he never had a stance of banning Muslims as a permanent thing.

He absolutely called for a ban on all Muslims, which is what Commodous said. Claiming he did not is a plain lie.

His Muslim ban after he got into office was his attempt to enact something like that policy, he was just too inept to find a good way to do it. It's another good example of the phrase that best describes Trump so far: 'malevolence tempered by incompetence'.

Love the way you tried to change the narrative about other postings in this thread claiming Trump called for a ban of all Muslims entering this country into Trump banned all Muslims from entering this country, as if that was actually said by anyone in this thread.....well, anyone except you.

No one said Trump banned all Muslims, but he sure as hell did say he wanted to do just that. And he tried.

I didn't derail it, I was on topic. Why the left wants anti-LGBT religious conservatives to come to this country in droves I don't understand... its like they want a more anti-LGBT population. I think that's wrong.

Correct. Several federal judges stopped him from banning all muslims.

Trump tried to ban all muslims from entering the country, and this was publicly admitted several times over. It's on you for refusing to believe his own admissions.

He banned immigration from seven predominantly Muslim nations.
