What’s the reasoning behind this? What issue were they trying to address?
Shoring up the labor pool. If they can gets kids to take the jobs they can't fill they don't need to offer higher wages. Kids don't know enough to fight for fair wages. I'm surprised to see they don't need documents to work. When I was in HS, I needed a work permit to get a job in NY.

I appreciate the responses but I was actually looking for a reason provided by the creators of the law itself. Sadly though, it’s hard to imagine any legitimate reason for this other than Republican cruelty.

Capitalists want to address the "labor shortage" not by raising wages, as it's supposed to work, but by creating new sources of labor to exploit so they can preserve existing levels of shareholder return.

If you like the subject of this thread, you'll certainly love THIS.

DES MOINES, Iowa — On Saturday parents and workers gathered to protest legislation looking at the state’s child labor laws.

The bill allows 14-year-olds to work six-hour night shifts, allows 15-year-olds to work in plants on assembly lines moving items up to 50 pounds, and allows 16 and 17-year-olds to serve alcohol, etc. The iOwa "REPUBLICAN" legislation was voted through a House committee at the beginning of March, but protestors want to get ahead of potential floor debate.
"This legislation is aimed at hurting people in poor financial situations."
"Lower economic strata are going to feel the pressure to put their kids out there in these kinds of jobs where they’re working late at night. When does this kid have time for homework?”

What I noted was one of the iOwa house republican sponsors, Rep Dave Deyoe, claims the legislation was necessary to align current iOwa labor-laws to laws written back in 1906, and in the 1930's.

iOwa republicans, red state republican legislators want to ban any conversation about gays or trans in the classroom AND YET..... it's fine for those kids serve beer in bars and work hard labor factory assembly lines.
But we all know what this legislation and others like it are really all about.... it's about kids working adult jobs for slave wages. If an adult is paid $25 to work an assembly line you know damn well that factory IS NEVER going to pay a 14 year old kid $25 for the same job. Those assembly-line kids will be lucky if they make $5 an hour.

PS.
But if the voters refuse to do anything to stop republicans from pulling this shit nation-wide in state after state, then this abuse will go on and on and on. Sure we are outraged, and sure we are shocked, but if the voters keep voting these assholes back into power then we have a VERY LARGE PROBLEM.

I doubt you were doing that at 12. The new law removed the requirement for proof of age under 16.

IMO: Arkansas wants to be able for companies to hire underage undocumented workers. There is already a case in a state where a 14 year old undocumented was working nights in slaughterhouses which is illegal federally.

At the same time, they will bitch about the southern border.
Sanitation company allegedly used child labor to clean slaughterhouses (usatoday.com)
I was so spot on!

Republicans creating incentives for illegal border crossings. Kansas just lowered worker age requirements so they can allow these plants to hire children to work in these conditions, some as young as 13. CEOs of these plants when caught are not jailed and pay a small fine. I would also bet this plant owner is a donor to Republicans. Meanwhile these same Republicans will complain about the border while creating incentives for child smuggling.

How any self-proclaimed Republican lives with themselves is beyond me. I wonder what it's like to be proud of the plain fact that you are one of the shittiest humans to have ever lived, and exist like that on a daily basis?
Did the reason they are like this not apply to you, the reason they are like that would be obvious. We were all exposed to put downs, physical and mental abuse that implied that we are defective in various ways, ugly, stupid, evil, useless, selfish, socially unexceptable, etc.

What is the fallout from this? We are.

We all struggle for success, for meaning, for love, for social standing, for a sense of self worth and respect as a result of the pain we were made to feel. We succeed or we sink, driven by these ego needs.

We all find coping mechanisms in all the avenues our lives can take. But it is money we most value as a symbol of self worth.

And the worse we were made to feel the greater our loss of empathy for ourselves as worthwhile people and the greater the hate we feel.

That hatred of others that is the result of the hatred we were dealt out as children and is express across a spectrum. We can wind up hating the haters for what they have done to us, one kind of contempt, or we can join the haters to redirect that hatred at those not fully broken to drag them to our level.

But it is all called good, because it helps relieve our own inner pain.

So when it comes to what you see among Republicans who think misery is good for others, it is simple the ego that mirrors self hate. They have turned their self hate and misery into a source of self pride. They love their own victim status, are proud on the surface of how much they have suffered and are pleased to help you join them. They are proud, hard, tough, survivors, not like soft, effete, bleeding heart liberals. They are Stockholm survivors happy to spread new misery to make more of the same. Misery loves company.

And they seek your contempt to feel alive and effective to which the rest of us like fools oblige.

I don't know I'm just kind of getting an inkling of a hint at this point that these people might actually be bad people. It's just like a little tingle on my skin right now so I'm not really sure but it's a possibility.

Perhaps it's time to move away from party politics and start educating people on the utter absurdity of everything we were taught to believe, that belief unexamined is a prison.

'They' is way to complex for Occam's Razor. It requires division based on undefined specifications. Put in your terms Occam's Razor would be, "We are assholes." But that still doesn't tell us much as to why. We hate ourselves has greater pinpoint accuracy as it is not only a descriptor but an explainer.

I finally figured out what the repubs are planning. They are anti-abortion and pro-young-children-working. That's their fix for the labor shortage. Bam!

After a late-night legislative session stretched into the pre-dawn hours, Iowa Senate Republicans approved loosening child labor restrictions just before 5 a.m. If Senate File 542 goes into effect, children in the Hawkeye State may be allowed to serve alcohol, work on meat-processing lines, operate heavy machinery, and work night shifts.
...
This bill is yet another example of Republicans approving policies that are anti-children while claiming to be their biggest protectors. Last month, Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R) signed a bill making it easier to employ children. In Ohio, Republican senators okayed letting 14-year-old and 15-year-old children work as late as 9 p.m. while school is in session. In March, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee (R) signed a bill that rolled back the ban on 16- and 17-year-olds from working at places that earn more than a quarter of revenue from alcohol, aka bars.

In Minnesota, a Republican lawmaker has introduced a measure to let 16- and 17-year-olds work in construction zones. That lawmaker also said child labor is important part of the economy during a labor shortage. “Eliminating work opportunities for youth just because of their age will make it even harder for businesses to find reliable employees,” Minnesota state Sen. Rich Draheim (R) told Insider. “Businesses teach these youth workers skills that will prepare them for their future — and maybe even attract them to their industry for life.”

Sorta related to child labor...this doesn't surprise me much, since alcohol consumption and related crime like DUI is handled with kid gloves here in WI.

Can't tik tok as a teen (calls for social media age limits) but can work for slave wages and sling beer.

Yeah. Let's go ahead and make America 1820 again. Maybe we can hand out packs of smokes to 9 year olds while we are at it and help out Big Tobacco too.

What a party of absolutely bat shit policy.

I admittedly don't understand age restriction when it comes to *serving* alcohol. Why is serving alcohol specifically different than other drinks?
Or would that technically allow a 14 y/o bartender as well?
(I'm mostly thinking of serving drinks in a place like Applebee's, etc. vs. a straight up bar)

How do stupid ideas propagate through every republican state at the same time? I don't remember stupid shit spreading nearly as quickly in the past.

they only elect the absolute dumbest versions of themselves. Also, they are completely empowered by Trumpism and social media/forums for psycopaths with the notion that "they are not alone."

these pieces of utter human garbage feel that they have a strong community, because all of their friends exist on the country that is the internet, and all the internet does is feed them hatred and bile, which is their sustenance.

No, but it's a number of different reasons, not the least of which is liability. Either would obviously be a problem, but would you rather have an 18 year old sneaking sips here and there between serving, or a 14 year old? For decades (at least), minors could sell beer in a grocer, but no hard liquor.

I worked in a college Rathskeller when I was 18 and we'd get drunk sometimes after work. Imagine a 14 year old doing that, and the ramifications. I feel like maturity level is definitely a factor.

They are emboldening each other and one-upping each other's shitty, culture war legislating. Donnie started the process of making the shitties bolder, but now they've passed continuous ignition phase, and they see no repercussions (yet).

I really hope they get decimated by voters come 2024, but some red states won't be rolling back the shittiness anytime soon because their voters are shitty too.

Seems like it's just accelerating the more time goes by, they're in a race to the dirt underneath the barrel. More shittiness and extremism. Very little actual helpful and productive legislation happening from Rethuglicvnts around the country. Gotta do as much damage to the states and country while a Dem is in office so they can blame him for everything they do.
