I would love to see a comparative review of different external hard drive cases, I have been searching but haven't found any yet.
If anyone has pointers to reviews (particularly comparative reviews) I would love to see them.
Or perhaps AnandTech would be interested in doing one.
The external hard drives are getting more and more popular for doing backups and such but I can only find good reviews of the packages (eg Maxtor onetouch) that include case and hard drive.
I'm particularly intersted in the Combo units that do USB 2.0 and IEEE 1394 Firewire. Also if the unit is big enough to put a removable hard drive tray such as a mobile rack into it.
There seem to be a bunch of differences between models and it is hard to tell which are good. They seem ripe for a comparative review.
- Loud fan vs quiet fan, some are even aluminum with no fan which sounds great if it can manage to cool the drive enough.
- Cooling.
- Maximum capacity, sometimes this is different for each interface on a combo unit.
- Sturdy
- Able to fit removable hard drive tray.
- Able to fit DVD writers/ CD-ROMs as well as just a hard drive.
- Speed.
- Size.
- Linux compatibility.
- Internal vs external (power brick) power supply.
- Stackable or not.
