Request for software that does references

Hi, I am a student in cognitive neurosciences, and I have to cite references. Some magazines request that the references be numbered in alphabetical order, and the number be denoted at the site of reference on the paper. Sometimes, I need to add new references that start with an 'a'. I'll have to go through and change the numbering on not only each and every one of the succeeding references, but also within the paper, which is one pain in the neck.

My question is, do u guys know of any software that does that automatically? Prefrably a plugin to word, but anything that works. Thanks in advance.

Just in case you don't know, there's a whole different realm of word processing based on LaTeX. You basically just mark what something is and the appearance is all handled for you. Citations/bibliographies are done with BibTeX, which has countless helper tools around. Might be worth checking out, especially for graduate work (where I had to start using it in order to deal with the hideously complex papers).
