That's a load of crap...Saying it was deliberately trying to shock and repulse you is ridiculous. That would imply that there were portions of the movie that were not integral to the story but only there to "shock" you. This was definately not the case.
If the amputation scene didn't shock and repulse you, then you are in a different league. The set up of the shot and the spattering blood, although brilliant in execution, was nothing more than gratuitious gore, intended to shock the viewer.
I don't question the filmmaker's ability, just how he chooses to use it.
