Bomber was a 24-year-old white man, and authorities don't know whether he acted alone or what his motive was. He is responsible for all the incidents in Austin, Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said.

2 dead, one seriously wounded by exploding packages left outside of 3 residents on Mar 2 and today.

"Manley (Austin police chief) strongly urged residents to be on the lookout for suspicious packages and to alert authorities immediately.
"If you've received a package that has been left on your doorstep or left in your yard or left on your driveway that you were not expecting or that was not from someone you know, then give us a call," Manley said."

"Local police, as well as agencies including the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, are working on the case."

Apparently these packages are not sent through post office or carrier. Careful, any of you who live in Austin.

One of the targets today was Hispanic. While Austin is quite progressive it doesn’t mean there aren’t racist elements there.

Personally I think it’s a little premature to debate intent at this point.

The articles from this and other sources say the Mar 2 bomb killed an African-American man while one of today's killed an African-American teen and one today seriously wounded an elderly Hispanic woman, so motive seems to be up in the air right now.

Austin is about 2/3rds white so the fact that all three victims have been nonwhite is eyebrow-raising. While that’s unlikely to happen by random chance it’s certainly not outside the realm of possibility so it’s suspicious but still too early to hazard a guess as to motive.

(There could also be other non random but still nonracial reasons for it like the bomber happens to live near black and Hispanic neighborhoods and doesn’t want to carry a bomb too far)

That said in these bombings it's best to wait until more information is available. Hopefully new technology will help find the perpetrator soon.

This is why you don't open packages that you weren't expecting.

What does this prevent? If someone has left a bomb outside your door or hands it to you, they intend for it to explode; so whether that involves a manual trigger that they use when they see you pick it up, or if the trigger is a device that detects movement once it has been activated (or any number of imaginative ways to detonate a bomb), it makes little difference really.

That's just aside from the fact that I can't be the only person whose partner sometimes arranges a delivery (in my name or theirs) and doesn't tell me about it (or it might take weeks for it to arrive and my mind has moved on to other things).
