RESnet workaround

Hey folks,

I'm a new grad student at a "top-flight" research University living in an on campus dorm. For whatever reason the school says you can only have one pc on the network, no hubs or routers allowed.

Naturally having two computers I'd like to workaround this if possible. My solution would be to buy a cable ethernet router that can clone a MAC address and set it up with the MAC addy for the one pc I already registered. You think this might work so that they couldn't tell it was a router?

Any other suggestions?

Have you researchd the repercussions if you are caught?

Routers are detectable, especially when you have yer basic nest of (generally) smart people, like at a university. I'm guessing that you're not the first person that wants to "upgrade" your connection ... they probably already have processes in-place to watch for things like that.

Consider carefully, then buy additional service through your Cable / DSL / Dial-up provider and surf till your fingers fall off.

Use the ResNET for school stuff.

Esentially you setup one machine to be connected to the campus network, and you set it to share that connection with anyone you connect to it.

Granted this was on token ring, and you probably can get a simple home network router to do this for you now (keep in mind what you're looking for is NAT).

YOu could use ICS or a linux router solution with 2 nics in the box. That way you wouldn't be using a hub or anything and if they give you crap you can say it wasn't in teh AUP or whatever

Just wondering how they can tell you are running a router? Doesn't a router appear to be one computer to them and then it's a firewall to block the outsiders out?

there are ways to tell. looking at TTL values and source port ranges for one.

I'd call your RESnet support line and ask how you can use multiple machines.

I agree. TTL will easily gave you away.


I used a router all year, but only because I was messing with a server I had.....I was learning how to setup WIn2k adv server and linux and needed the net sparsely but more importantly used the built-in switch more than anything else.



Obviously I never left the server as a "downloader" machine, so I guess it never bothered anyone.


I also was the "FIX-IT" guy so I found it easy to have a mini network to expedite repairs
