*RESOLVED* Damn you, Intel. (Stock HSF is stuck on CPU.)

I knew I shouldn't have installed the stock cooler while waiting for my Zalman.

Now the damn thing's stuck on thanks to the Ghetto-Brand Intel thermal pad.

Any suggestions? Would heating it up (Prime95 loops) help any?

Tried to find a former post, but I evidently suck at teh searching game.

I don't quite see how this is Intel's fault - let alone damning the entire company. Don't you normally want the pad to make good contact with the CPU?

I would suggest twisting it off. It's probably primarily a vaccuum seal - not the pad acting like a glue. My suggestion: take the fan assembly off leaving only the aluminium heatsink there, then twist.

If it's a P4 just twist and rip that sucker off. If it's a P3 I would be more gentle. Get it warm and it should seperate easily.

LOL, I had that happen too. It got stuck on pretty tight. I ended getting the heatsink off, but then I realized that the CPU was still stuck to the heatsink and I had pulled the CPU out of the socket while it was still locked... that's some strong adhesive... er... thermal pad.

RE:"Damn you, Intel"

Now, Now! Everyone knows Intel makes the best chips and can do no wrong.

Mac

PS...try a hair dryer, maybe it will get soft enough to let loose.

Just as we all know that you hate Intel, and they can do no right.

I had the same thing happen to me and ,I explained in another post on how to remove the cpu from the heatsink, that new stuff is very hard after use,and when I took mine off to put on the Zalman it pulled the CPU right out of the socket.and I didn't pull that hard either.I suggest running the computer for about 5+ min and then release the fan attachment lock. Then very gently turn or twist it to L & R at a very slow gentel twisting movement.I was lucky not to mess up the socket pin aray that locks the CPU down,BTW I did haft to insert the CPU twice for it to bit all the pins for it see the cpu to boot up had me sweating,I only had the retail 3 giger 6 days.Boy I hate that stupid attachment Intel uses now to lock the heat sink down, not that it dosen't wor,but how hard it is to remove the fan that lock to the MB bracket.I made a special tool to grab at all four corners at once to pull the Fan off the heat sink.
Now with the Zalman P4 model CNPS 7000-Cu (how sweet that heatsink is,I get chills looking at it)goes on very easy and takeing it off in easer .

I had trouble lining up the screws with the bars... it's hard to see at that angle.

Wasn't there an editor or user at HardOCP forums that ripped his heatspreader off the P4 and apparently ruined the chip? I have the video, too.

Good luck...I know from experience they are buggers to get off, but it's there to protect your investment.

I figured out a solution. Not quite as painful. Ran the sucker with no fan. At 65C I shut down and the sucker popped right off.

Zalman's sitting on there nicely ... still needs a readjustment I think. Running 42 under full load after an hour of Prime95. Tualatin Celeron 1.3, Zalman CNPS3000+, no fan, BTW.
