Hey folks,

I have a very specific resume-related question.

Here's the background: currently work in I.T., have been for about 4 years now. Going to be looking for a new job in the new year.

Originally attended Uni for a 4 year program, but left school about halfway through. However, it was somewhat related to my current field (CS).

Recently I re-applied to Uni and got back in, to finish a degree through Correspondence, but it's not related to I.T (it's Arts (humanities)...).

Right now my education section says:

2006 - current (UniversityName) Mytown, ON
Bachelor of Arts, Liberal Studies
- currently pursuing a B.A. through part-time studies

1998-2001 (UniversityName) Mytown, ON
Candidate for Bachelor of Mathematics, co-op
- took a number of courses in xxx, yyy, zzz, etc.

My question is: How *bad* does this look? Should I even bother mentioning my 1998 attempt at getting a university degree? It's unfinished... but on the plus side, I studied Comp Sci and I was in co-op too, did a number of co-op terms at some pretty cool companies (which I plan to mention in my Experience section).

Any and all advice is appreciated, taking into account my field (I.T.) -- thanks!

I think it would be okay to put down both. Also, having an estimated graduation date for the degree wouldn't hurt too. Putting all these together, maybe something like this would work:

1998-2001, 2006-Current, University name, Town, State
Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies, June 2007 (Expected)

So basically, instead of drawing attention to the fact I was at Uni for 2 separate stretches... make it appear as "one" entry?

However, my older University experience is more related to my field... which is why I thought mentioning it might help in some way or another.

I'm assuming that you attended the same college both times right? Then I think it's clear from the dates that you took some time off and have returned to continue your studies. If you feel like it would be benificial to list some of the classes you took as a Mathematics major you should do this, but I would keep it short and to the point. i.e Calculus, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Analysis.

UPDATE:

Ok, after about 3 weeks of keeping my resume as "public" on some popular job search sites, and even applying to a bunch of jobs... nothing substantial has materialized. This is in a major metropolitan city - toronto.

I am wondering if my Education section is the factor that's holding employers back from contacting me?
I have 4 years of experience in I.T., all at well known enterprise-sized companies. Shouldn't that be sufficient? Since when did I.T. employers get all prickly on the subject of education?

Anyways I was thinking of re-wording the education section so it doesn't make me sound like a student. Maybe removing the "expected graduation" phrase. Or maybe indicating that I was a uni student from 1998-2003, but didn't finish my degree, so I went back via Continuing Studies last year to finish it off while working. But how to word it so they're not turned off?
