What's the etiquette for including your current boss as your reference for your updated resume?

I actually like my job but if the right opening comes up, I want to have an updated resume to send. My problem is two-fold, it's not like i'm desperate to get out of here and don't give a damn so I don't want my boss to know i'm even looking, but if they contact him, the cats out of the bag. I also don't want any HR guy to think I'm hiding my current employer from them.

Our employee handbook states that references will not be provided and that the firm will only give out tenure of employment on employees. Does that make a difference?

I believe it's an unspoken rule that if you don't have their permission, you don't put them up as a reference.

If he got called up and didn't know what to expect or that you were even leaving, what is he going to say to your potential employer?

If you don't have their express permission to do so, then don't.

Additionally, don't volunteer other people's personal info. "References available upon request."

This happens a lot. Don't argue. And don't bother putting your boss on your resume as a reference since he can't give you one.

I always ask if I can add someone as a reference, and sometimes I will get a reply asking me what I need from them as a reference.
