Yup, the VMU is back to $9.99 at Bestbuy.

Edit: The controller is back to $14.99 too. Crazy Taxi is $9.99

The argument that piracy killed off Dreamcast development is a false argument.

Dreamcast development stopped because Sega stopped Dreamcast production and ceased official support for the platform, therefore reducing confidence in the future of the platform.

Piracy is not a concern AT ALL for developers.

Just look at the PSX and the PS2. There is a hundred times more piracy going on (past and present) for both of these platforms compared to the Dreamcast, but do you see developers abandoning these two platforms?

Confidential Mission and Death Crimson OX are both very decent light gun games.

Unreal Tournament looks great on the DC, but plays like crap without a keyboard and mouse.

The most underrated game on the DC is Test Drive V-Rally. I haven't had that much fun playing a realistic driving game since Gran Tourismo 1.

I've been scouring local stores for a couple weeks now (north SF Bay area). At Target, I bought UFC for $6.99 and 102 Dalmations for $9.99. Most other titles were full price (Sonic Adventures 2 for $29.99).

Best buy seems to have normal prices for stuff. I bought a jump pack for $9.99. Saw JGR for $9.99, and keyboards were $14.99.

Do you need to have a wheel for decent game play in DC for racing games? I'm looking at F1 something or other.. The CART racing game, the Ferrari game and the LeMans test drive. Sorry.. I can't remember the names right now. I'm a newbie to DC.

The DC is a great deal right now, but I might take a pass on it if I have to buy all the accessories. Good price or not, all this stuff adds up in a hurry if you don't watch it. Especially if you're in somewhat of a scramble to get stuff before it disappears.

Sorry to post again, but I have to ask this question. Why is Dreamcast so much better than just playing games on your pc? I'm asking because I'm into race games and I already have a good wheel for my pc, but don't have a wheel or don't plan on buying a wheel for DC unless I can get a killer deal on one.

Thanks again,

Sal

Because there are games available for DC that are not on PC, the DC is easier to configure than a PC, and you can play multiplayer with some friends at your house without lugging cases everywhere and setting up a LAN.

And it's only $50!

<< Do you need to have a wheel for decent game play in DC for racing games? >>

In the short time I've been messing with my DC, a wheel makes a WORLD of difference, especially to the better racing games.

I've tried both the Interact and the MadCatz MC2 and have to say I prefer the MC2!
Some folks swear by the ACTLabs Force RS series, which can be used on multiple platforms with swappable firmware cartridges. They offer options such as a clutch and gated shifter. However, expect to part with $300 and up for such a setup.

Here's a short list of some good driving games for the DC (in no particular order):
Test Drive Le Mans
Test Drive V-Rally
Sega Rally 2
Flag to Flag CART Racing
Daytona USA
F1: World Grand Prix
Ferrari F355
Crazy Taxi 1 & 2

Check COMPUSA as well

I just picked up

102 Dalmations for $7.99
ECW: Hardcore Revolution for $9.99
Fighting Force 2 for $7.99

Most of their titles were $19.99 or less except for "newer/popular" titles like Superman, Marvel vs. Capcom etc.

Also kbkids.com has several "clearance items" as well.

Well worth a looksey.

hey-- just an update, the VMU's at Best Buy (at least local for Wash DC area) have been dropped to 7.99
I just picked up two today, 7.99 is crazy cheap for a product that once sold for over 30

all controllers/light guns/ almost everything else dreamcast related at best buy was gone. they're really gettin rid of the stuff

Bump

I think the $7.99 VMU might only be for Washington, the website is still at $9.99. I haven't checked the Boston local store yet.

Grandia 2 is only $19.99 at www.ebgames.com. Shipping a bit much though, only has 2 or 1 day air shipping.

I didn't search through their entire selection of games yet. Their preowned prices are a bit high..

Edit: Jump pack is only $9.99 too, which is cheaper than BB's $14.99

The white VMU are 7.99. The blue translucent VMU are 9.99. Hope that clears it up. This is B&M price, btw.

If you even remotely enjoy racing games, then you owe it to yourself to get a good wheel and at least these:

Le Mans - Amazing! GFX are up there with the best on the 'new' consoles.
F355 - You will think you're playing on an XBox. 8)
Metropolis Street Racer - Sooooo much Fun!
Bleemcast with Gran Turismo 2 - GFX are way better than on the PS1, and runs at 60FPS, high-rez, anti-aliased! Worth double the price! Controls wonderfully!

and for some alternative fun...

18 wheeler - funny stuff.
San Fransisco Rush 2049 - awesome arcade racer.
Crazy taxy 1 & 2 - both are great.

Oh, and all this at the price of a few games on the other consoles.

Oh, and be sure to grab a VGA box, and run these on a VGA monitor. Xbox, GC, PS2, eat your heart out!
Go for it!

OK, my grand total so far:

console = $63 with tax/warranty
NFL2K1 = $12
CrazyTaxi1 = $11
VirtuaTennis = $11
VMU = $11

Total = $108

I sure hope I like this thing (I haven't opened it yet).

I just bought Bleemcast for gt2 @ ebgames for $5.99. I can't wait to check it out.

Are there any games that are close to GT2 for dreamcast? Good number of cars, tracks, options, customizing(?).. good controll..

wow, I've only had the Dreamcast since Sunday and I've already bought a lot of stuff of it.

I might go to BB B&M and check it out. I'll probably get the blue VMU though. I'd like to distinquish between the two of them.

I actually bought the blue VMU's at BB for 7.99. The price on the shelf said 7.99 for both the blue and the white VMUs, but when he rang up my 2 blue VMU's it said 9.99. I told him the price on the shelf and he said, "That's what I thought, it's been doing this lately."
Probably just a local pricing mistake, and in any case, not much to get riled up for, only 2 bucks difference.

If only the Dreamcast was priced this way from the start...it would be flying off the shelves and still be in production. Am I wrong?

I found the in-store special @ compusa. You have to print the above link, and bring it to the sotre. Buy 2 games, get 3rd one free. You can even combine N64, Gameboy color and Gamecube in those three games!
