Part number on Buy.com website matches the ATI part number for the retail card. I ordered one.

Isn't this a HOT deal? I just placed my order...

I wonder what the performance is like on a Celeron@850..? The last video card I paid over $100 for (or bought new) was a Diamon Viper TNT thing.

Not to go OT, but I'd say it's a Hot Deal if ATI has worked-out driver issues. Is this card now performing well, without issues, under XP? I'd be tempted to replace my GF2, if it is.

Edit: grammar

I'm running XP (and a 7500) with absolutely no issues whatsoever, including DirectX, TV-out, 2d accelleration, etc.

This is a damn hot deal!

I'll take issue with it.

First off, I'd like to say that this is a VERY good price on this card. Nice find.

However, I can't stand this card. I traded in my VisionTek GeForce 3 TI200 for this card.

The video output and 2D quality on this card is great. However, the good stuff stops there.

Nascar games refuse to work on my system since I put the 8500 in there. My performance is actually LOWER on all of my games than it was with my GF3 TI200 (supposedly an inferior card).

CS crashes every 10 seconds unless you get an update off of Sierra's site. CounterStrike's FPS goes down to 20 or 30 as soon as I see someone, then right back up to 90 when I'm all alone. My GF3 had a FPS ceiling of 60FPS, but it never dipped below 59.8. Running at 25 FPS on a 3-year-old game just plain blows. It's inexcuseable.

The drivers are also a pain in the ass. You have to uninstall the old drivers before putting the new ones in. This is a huge pain in WinXP, because XP automatically tries to install its own drivers after you take out the old ones.

ALL of my games have reduced performance since I installed this card.

I want my old GeForce back! This card is leaving my system very, VERY soon.

Here's what I'm running:

Abit KG7-RAID with 512MB DDR RAM
WinXP Pro
2 7200 RPM HDs
SBLIVE!5.1
Radeon 8500 Retail

Don't know if this helps, but there have been several major driver releases recently. I'm running some leaked x43's on another machine with a Radeon VE in it without problems, and many other people have good things to say about those drivers. Then, today, ATI released some official drivers with a lower version, x35 I think, and almost at the same time a new set of leaked ones x52 became available. The official ones have gotten poor reviews, the feedback on the newest leaked drivers has been mostly postive.

The R100 family (Radeon, 7500) finally seems to have some very good drivers, which give me hope that the R200 (8500) cards will soon be as solid. I'm psyched to get this card because: it's less than $50 more than a 7500 or some flavors of the original Radeon; it goes toe-to-toe with the GF3 Ti 500 which costs $100 more (this is according to the latest 8500 reviews anyway); and, like I said, I've been living in the stone age of graphics technology

The 8500 works great for me. It has flawlessly played every game I have thrown at it and the visual quality cannot be matched by the GeForce series. The visual quality is the clincher for me. No more squinting at text in high resolution.

BTW the new All in Wonder series (7500/8500) cards look very cool. You can use them like a TIVO. How cool is that?

FSUpaintball..I bet the issue is residual geforce drivers....it is very hard to completely remove all the old drivers and registry settings...
I bet a clean install and reformat of the OS fixes your problems

I used to update my video drivers with every new release and never really "saw" the big improvements...I used to do this with my V3, V5 and when the radeon 64mg vivo first came out....then I moved to Winxp and used the 3281 drivers with my Radeon clocked at 205/205(default is 183/183) I think...and they work on my system like a dream...no problem glitches or issues...I have run RTCW,MOHAA,Giants, Red Faction all very smoothly....there are newer one on MS XP update site..but i now feel if it is not broken do not fix it....

These drivers were placed after a clean install ...I am afraid to update the drivers and find I have developed a problem....also I did try some of thetweakers out there and the recommendeed settings for certain games as well as try to tweak it my self..this usually led to problems in my hands..the only that works well is the overclocking feature...I just found it too hard to figure which of the settings I changed caused a problem and for me I could not really see much in image or speed improvement.

Sorry OT a bit....

Looks like a great deal for a very nice card....

anyone know when ATI is releasing its next generation cards....

FSUpaintball, you don't have PM allowed.
Would you consider an even swap- your ATI 8500(more details please) for my MSI Geforce3 with TV out?

Nah, I appreciate it, but I have the CUSA replacement plan on this card, so if it ever goes down the crapper (meaning - I'm being tempted to literally throw it down there), I can just get it replaced for free, or I'll just pay to upgrade to a GF4 TI card.

Thanks for letting me know about the PM, I'll fix that.
