I was doing the research recently, and honestly, at stock speeds, both CPUs are about the same. Barton gets a slight edge due to the L2 cache but it is giving up 166 MHz to the TBred XP 2400+. So in some workloads, it'll do better and in some, it can even trail. Most users will probably prefer Barton because it "feels smoother" due to the larger L2 cache.

Can anyone comment on the warranty issue w.r.t. to thermal compound? AMD was reported to revoke the warranty if we use thermal compound. I have a new Thermalright HS and Arctic Silver 3 waiting, and would be very interested in picking up this CPU. But not if I lose warranty coverage (not that I ever expect a CPU to fail).

Im not talking about a PR rating, im talking about a real life benchmark, say Commanche 4, Q3A, DiVX encoding, Lame encoding, etc etc etc.
Well the PR rating was posted becuase 3400+ is expected to be released later this year.
When you say "Show me...where a Barton @ 2300 mhz will "blow away" a 3GHZ P4...." you suggest that it may be doubtful that 3400+ Barton will beat a 3.0 GHz Pentium.

It is more than likely that 3400+ Barton will, when it comes out, blow away the 3 gig Pentium. Since 3400+ stock speed can be reached by overclocking some of today's affordable Barton's...

Well...........

if you really want to get technical, if you read the documents that come with an AMD retail processor, using any heatsink other than the supplied stock heatsink/thermal pad combination will void the warranty.

So the grease issue, like this heatsink issue, is one where AMD is covering their own rear ends. So if you use a third party heatsink, you're voiding the retail warranty, thermal pad or not.

Thanks Mike.

This being AT Forums, I'm just curious if fellow geeks are potentially foregoing their retail warranty, or sticking with the POS stock HSF.

You can usually clean off thermal paste if you ever have trouble and need to send the CPU back. The warranty thing is kind of a non-issue with me as I have very rarely had CPUs go bad. Everything else in the computer besides the CPU is more prone to failure. That is my experience anyway.

This kind of reminds me of the someone who was questioning the longevity of a KDS 17" monitor which was something like $65 after rebate. Get real people, even if you only get one or maybe two years, it isn't like you took out a home loan to pay for the stuff. I would be more concerned about getting a longer warranty on your hard drive or something else that has moving parts.

I just got my "Item has shipped, here's your tracking number" email from Newegg.

What I want to know is: How good does this mofo overclock? My current CPU, XP2100 TBred-B does 2.1GHZ @ 1.700v and idles at 41C. If I can get this level of performance out of the Barton, I'll be a very happy Overclocker.

I expect we should start seeing some results tomorrow or Wednesday.

I called AMD that my CPU is dead after changing mobos (cracked core) and her first question was did you put heat compound on it? Of course. No problem. I never used their HSF, so I don't get that warranty gag.

I think Newegg anticipated the price drop and reflected this in their website a couple of days before AMD did it officially. In other words, I don't think it is going much lower than $96, at least for a little while.

Bump.

I'm sure a few people that ordered this CPU live very close to Newegg and are either picking it up or having it next-dayed.

I want to know how it overclocks! Of course, when I get mine next week I'll let you know how mine does. <--too cheap to pay $24 for next day on $100 order.

for those who received their Barton 2500+, what's the manufacturing date on your CPU?

Newegg ships Fed-Ex super saver which is usually pretty fast regardless of where you live. None of this five or six ground days like you get with UPS. If you ordered over the weekend, I suspect you will get by Friday at the latest.

ahh, but the real question is can it live up to it's PR rating and run with a P4 3.4 when its released?

that is a negatory on the waiting longer these prices will stay like this at least untill amd can bring out something new but if you watch lets say the 2100+ this week it dropped very little so under a 100 bucks this processor will stay but it will not be far under as the increased core size hurts profits

I don't want open a whole P4 vs AMD XP can of worms, but one thing about P4 that allows it to run so fast is it automatically throttles back when the temp gets too high. Not sure how dramatic this is with the current P4s, but I'm sure it is still part of the architecture. I don't think AMD has any of this stuff. You can pretty much run this thing pedal to the metal until it fries.

I'm sorry but I had to reply to this. What does cpu throttling have to do with performance? My AthlonXP runs at 100% all day everyday with no problems. It's performance doesn't suffer because of this. All the P4 throttling does is scale back the speed of the processor if it starts to overheat. Like if your fan dies and you don't notice. If anything it hinders the P4's performance if it has to kick in the throttling.
