Retail XP2100 Too HOT????

I just bought a retail version XP2100 with HSF. I figured that AMD would know best what HSF their chip would need, but now I wonder if they know what they are doing. The idle temp is running about 120 F. and under a very light load it goes up to about 125 F. I haven't run it under a full stress load yet. I thought that my temp might be reading wrong, but if anything it is low. When I touch the heat sink, I can't leave my finger on it very long at all before it gets too hot to hold it there -- very hot!!! My 1G thunderbird machine is barely warm to the touch and it was a retail version chip with HSF. (Funny thing is the HSF that came with the IG is bigger than the one that came with the 2100!?!?)

I am not overclocking. Anyone else running a 2100 - what temp are you running?? What temp should I be at?? Should I get a different HSF??? Any chance I have a bad chip???

Sounds fine.. as long as it doesnt go into the 60's degrees celsius the chip should run stable, and reliably.

I have a retail 1800+ and under full load when overclocked to 2000+ with the stock HSF it would hit 58C with minimum case cooling. now that i have a new CoolerMaster HHC-001 it runs at 41C. i feel much more comfortable. It ran just as stable before, but now i can sleep much better at night knowing it's ALOT cooler now.. that is WELL within the very safe temps of an AthlonXP CPU.

Actually, that temp is still pretty good. I had a 1.2ghz T-bird once that was running around 131degrees all the time with no problems (but I have since upgraded the HS/F ). The HSF that came with the retail CPU's are not the best performers but do a good enough job to keep temps within spec. If you feel uncomfortable with it, just upgrade the HSF.

I have a retail 2100+ that with the factory HS/fan the temp never went over 115deg. Before overclocking I got an Alpha PAL8045 and now the temp never goes above 98deg. It sounds to me that you have marginal case cooling. What is your system temp? Mine is always in the low 80's.

That's not too hot at all. If your cpu goes above 140 F then I would start to get concerned but I would make sure that your case is vented properly(like add an intake 80mm and an exhause 80mm fan if you don't have any).

My Athlon 1700+ with Volcano 7 cooler runs only with 41C in the summer

Yield: I agree with you,-- I think I could sleep better at night if the temp was lower, so I think I will update the HSF. At least now I know that I can do it later, nothing urgent. Thanks all.

Try the case fans first if you don't have any. Cheaper and easier.
