Retaining data after mobo swap?

I've got a Gigabyte EX58-UD5 board that died on me, was sent back for repairs, and came back "repaired" but now will not acknowledge 2 of 6 banks of memory installed (triple channel DDR).

Considering switching to a new board. I was pleased to find that when I popped the board in the system, it booted normally... Raid 0 and Raid 1 array were both intact. It was the same motherboard, so that can be expected...

But if I switch models or even manufacturers, would/could the array(s) be maintained? I'm guessing the 0 array may be lost, which is fine because I don't store anything critical on the striped array anyhow. And I think the mirrored array should be fine, because worst case scenario 1 drive should work by itself and retain all the data... Correct?

You can clone the RAID arrays onto a single hard drive. That's what I would do since to me that is the simplest solution.

Rebuild the array later on the new hardware, if you want. You might find that it isnt even worth the hassle.

I have done this a number of times. Intel RAID puts the metadata on the disks, so moving from one chipset to another has never been an issue for me...you mileage may vary, depending on the differences in the chipsets.

If you stick with Intel you should be good to go.

Agreed. Except the mirrored array is 1TB and I don't have a spare 1TB drive floating about... Except the two forming the mirror.

Hmmm... Didn't realize it had Intel raid... Thought it was Sil or some other company. Interesting.

If I can't get Gigabyte to fix the board, then I suppose I will order a new one. If the raid doesn't work, I'll just pop the Gigabyte board back in long enough to recover the non-important stuff.

Oh, and thanks Cronjob and sm625!
