Retarded math professor rambling inside

So this quarter I was hoping to sign up for a probability course that would fulfill that requirement of my major (math). However by the time my sign up date came up, the class was already full.

I then had to find another course then, and I was e-mailed about a new course: Knot Theory, which would operate much like an independent study course in which we would be assigned a topic, do research on it, and then write a term paper on the topic. It emphasized that it was "a preview of what graduate math would be like", which was quite intriguing to me as well.

Sounded interesting enough, and it seemed to fit into my schedule nicely as well, since it was scheduled to meet on MWF from 1-1:50, and because my other classes were mostly Tues/Thurs, it would give my schedule some nice balance to it.

I'm signed up for the class then, ready to get going today..since classes just started yesterday, when on Wednesday I get an e-mail from the professor stating:

I just wanted to remind you that the first class meeting for math 191 will
take place at 3 p.m. tomorrow
Thursday, January, 6th, in MS 6227.
We will have to agree on the regular class time at this meeting.
If you can not make it to the beginning of the class, please come as soon
as you can. I apologize for any inconvenience to those with class
conflict, but that was the time when the most students can make it. I will
send an e-mail to everybody with what we decide on the regular class time
tomorrow.

Which completely sucks for me because I have a class from 2-3:15 and another class from 4-5:50, meaning I'd have to arrive late, and then have to leave not much longer for my next class.

I thought this preliminary meeting would just be a basic intro to the structure of the class, and more importantly, would determine when the class would meet.

However as I try to find the class, I ntotice that there is NO room 6227 as stated in the e-mail, and eventually discover that my prof meant room 6221. I get lost for a few minutes, and eventually at around 3:30 I find the correct classroom, and find our prof lecturing about knots and all that already.

I'm able to pick up a minimal amount, but having missed the beginning of class, I sit there for about 30 minutes before I'm just completely lost..and am "saved" by a group of students and another professor who say that THEY have an actual scheduled class in this very room that I was in at 4:00 because my prof is too retarded to get the scheduling of her classes right (or even the room number), because meeting at the actual time that the class is supposed to meet was "too much of an inconvenience for some of the students". We then proceed to get kicked out of the room and are "forced" to leave.

It's 4:00 then, so we all leave, and I run to my next class across campus and sit through it until 6, at which time I'm starvving after not having eaten since 11.

I then go home, e-mail the prof about the situation and ask her what's going on..and get this:

Unfortunately, the class can not meet at the originally scheduled time
(MWF 1-2) because many students can not make
this time.

Then WTF did they sign up for the class then??

Today, at the beginning of the class we voted that the class will take
place Tuesdays and Thursdays 3-4:15 (two 75 minute lectures per week
instead of three 50 minute classes per week) as this was basically the only
option which worked for the vast majority of the students.

Well OBVIOUSLY if they're there they can make that time and will vote for that time, and those who couldn't make that time weren't there to VOTE for it and have any say in it.

I then reply back to her stating this..in slightly nicer terms, and get this in reply:

You can try coming 3:15 --- 4. However, this way you will be attending
only slightly more then half the class.

Yeah no kidding. It'd actually be closer to 3:20-3:50 what with the walking and all.

If this were a normal math class, and if I were of somewhat above average intelligence I might be able to handle it, but given that this seems to be close to a graduate level class and I'm a dumbass, I might have to just drop this class and waste a quarter away without taking a required math class since they're pretty much all full now.

Perhaps the worst part is that it's a small class, and it seems everyone else can make the meeting times in time, from what I gather..so there's probably little influence I will have in changing any structure involved with the class.

I have about 4 weeks though to decide if I want to keep it, so I'll just try to stick it out until then..

And though I'm not religious at all, God bless you if you've made it this far

i guess you got a preview of what graduate math would be like already, hahaha.

Haha, sounds like the Sociology profs at U-M. And the History profs. And the PoliSci profs. Yup, that pretty much sounds like the way the U-M is run.

I just remember tangles from knot theory. Four people hold two ropes with two people holding the ends of one rope and the other two people each holding the ends of another rope. Each configuration of the two ropes are assigned a real number and depending on how you rotate the four people, you either add one to the number or take the reciprocal of that number.

Drop the class and pick another one up, if the class you're interested in is full, speak to the prof about giving you permission to add you manually many will do it.

Yes, and add that the reason you now want to take their class is because you cannot make it to the knot class, because of a vote for the class meeting time... Most would be quite understanding of that.

Oh, yes, we reaaaaaaaaaaaaally had to know that. I thought, according to you, girls were supposed to be the ones who narrated stories in details. You spend your time on minutiae.

Um, interesting that you're a math major. I would never have suspected. :/ Good for you. I hope that you have a better experience scheduling your courses next semester.

P.S. Just follow the suggestions already made. I know it's a pain in the butt when a mathematics professor is that screwed up. Personally, I would probably drop the class. There is one thing I have learned: My experience at school should be fun, not a misery. I am determined never to subject myself to a miserable experience again.

Seriously though, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. How could you learn ANYTHING from someone who is as illogical and irresponsible as that?

No, that was mean.

Yeah it sucks. Your best bet is to drop, maybe sit in on the class that is full . . I'm sure a couple people won't actually go through with it and you might be able to talk your way in.

I wouldn't want to take this knot theory class from a prof as flaky as this one sounds.
