I'm looking to upgrade to a 22" widescreen (1680x1050) LCD. After reading all the info I'm a little frustrated at the options. Currently, I have a Dell 1905FP (19" 1280x1024). If I'm not mistaken, it's a VA panel. So, I'm sort of worried about transitioning to a TN panel - after being used to VA, will I think the quality is subpar? My applications are gaming, various "text" applications, amateur photo editing, and a bit of multimedia (video editing and a rare movie).

Based on the recommendations, it looks like I should consider the Viewsonic VX2255wmb ($325 shipped after MIR from Newegg). Or, there's the Samsung 215TW ($458 shipped from TigerDirect). So, the idea of paying an extra $130 for a smaller monitor isn't very appealing - would the quality difference of the Samsung really be worth it, given that it might even be inferior for gaming?

Thanks for listening!

I can't bring myself to buy that viewsonic. Apart from a couple good reviews there really isn't that much feedback around it on the web opposed to some of the other popular models. It only has a 5ms response time and a built in webcam which I would find totally useless. Yes it has a nice stand but I never move my lcd once I have it in a good postion anyway.

I'm not sure why you have this stance on it (degrading the good features of it?). It has good solid reviews from BeHardware and prad. Webcam is nearly invisible and doesn't really need to be used.

I don't care for the design that much myself but I don't see it as an impediment.

It's at least as good a choice as other 22"s which have had issues (L226WTQ ghosting issue solved only in some revs, 226BW panel lottery, w2207 panel lottery, etc.)

Great default color accuracy @ http://www.digitalversus.com/d...1&mo2=244&p2=2333&ph=1

Same uniform CMO S-MVA panel in all units. No overdrive so no chance of artifacts, but good native response. Lower input lag than most competitors (except 226BW which doesn't count because of panel lottery).

Not a great review at ExtremeTech: http://www.extremetech.com/art.../0,1697,2211595,00.asp

Lots of QA issues associated with this model also. It does have a VA panel though.

I have one of these. The box says 6ms response time. I've never seen any measurement of lag. I can say that I've never perceived any lag or ghosting.

I agree with the popular assessment of this monitor: the picture is good, but they have a high failure rate. Get one and use it mercilessly for the 14 day over-the-counter exchange period. If it survives that, I would expect the mortality rate to be comparable to any other monitor. Yes, my first one's backlight crapped out within 5 days. But my second one has been in constant use 9 or 10 hours a day M-F since January 8 with no problems.

The price is unbeatable. I personally consider this the best entry-level bargain on the market, which makes all the TN panels obsolete. When you consider that you can't touch an IPS panel this size for three times the price, its even more obvious what a value this monitor is.

For a quarter grand more, you can have one of the recommended *VA panels, and probably get better reliability and/or picture, but I can think of higher return-on-investment uses for my money.

When it comes to contrast ratio and color quality, I am very satisfied. I set the contrast, brightness and RGB using various free manual calibration images from the web, and am convinced that if I gave up anything in picture quality, I am blissfully ignorant.

My only complaint is the viewing angle stability, which is a problem for every *VA panel. I wish I could personally view some IPS panels, because I am seriously considering getting an HP LP2065. There would probably be one on the way to me right now if the price had not jumped by $30. That is probably a better monitor for viewing angle stability, at the expense of price (higher), size (20" 4:3 vs 24" 16:10) and dot pitch (smaller is not what my 45 year old eyes are asking for!). On the plus side, warranty (3 vs. 1 year) and reliability would be advantages for the HP.

So my conclusion is in the low end of the market, $350 or less, the Soyo and the HP are my picks. You could minimize lag and response time with a TN panel, but you probably would not notice the difference, and you would definitely sacrifice picture quality.

Note: LP2065 has a panel lottery as well.

The price is $360. Since I have read the 2207 is discontinued, is the 2207 now worth $360+tax?

I wonder how they knew it was a Samsung panel?

Gee...the salesmen you must have the fortune of meeting are a lot better than the ones around here.

For a Samsung panel, I'd jump on it. True Samsung 22"s are rare, even coming from Samsung Electronics.

I had to tell them what rev to look for on the box . I had a worse time at Best Buy. I had to argue with the two 'techs' I talked to. They kept trying to tell me all the W2207's were the same and had hp panels. I had to break the news to them and explain myself twice. They finally believed me when I told them what the different revs might be on the boxes and what they meant.

What about the BenQ x2200w ?

On paper it looks like a good monitor and i really can't say bad things about my BenQ FP71E for the price it was a good monitor.

I bought the Samsung 226BW before christmas and was so much dissapointed i returned it. Colors out of the box was bad and i just don't have the time to calibrate colors. And the backlight was uneven and visible when playing Oblivion. And last the viewing angle was so poor i could see the colors change while moving on my chair. I can say without any doubt that my old BenQ FP71E is a better monitor i really don't understand why people rate the Samsung 226BW so high.

This 2MS gray the gray is just a marketing gimmick i did not see any difference between my 8MS typical BenQ FP71E and the Samsung 226BW 2MS GTG. And the typical contrast is not very good the high contrast Samsung announce is dynamic and honestly it doesn't work very well way to bright to work when the monitor is set at dymamic contrat.

I really can't decide which monitor to buy. The BenQ G2000W looks nice and the X2200W too. The LG L226WTQ-SF looks a good option same for the ViewSonic VX2235wm or VX2255wmb. As for NEC i heard their gaming LCD monitors are the best but NEC makes so much models i'm just lost and i can't find them in Canada so i would need to buy it online which is not good if there's dead pixels out of the box.

Really hard to chose a monitor these days with all those cheap TN panels all over the place.

It's not even that great, just a little better in most instances. If viewing angle is an issue (it might turn out to be), then you will probably like the 215TW better. I don't want to suck you out of getting a good monitor but I really think the VX is the better deal for you right now.
This evening I realized that I could get the VX2255wmb from Costco for $300 + tax. So I went out and grabbed one. I haven't used it very long but so far it looks fantastic and I haven't even done any kind of tweaking. Thanks for the tip!

As an update to this post, I was finally able to go by OfficeMax tonight and verify the W2207 was a rev with a Samsung panel. I bought it and am typing while looking at it currently. I haven't had time to calibrate it, but so far I am loving it. Obviously one of the problems with my old crt was over time it had lost a lot of focus. Even though the text on this lcd isn't that much larger than on my crt, I can see if so much better that I don't need computer glasses.

I will update my thoughts after a few days and when I am able to tune everything.

I am so grateful for this thread and all the input/help received here.

Happy viewing!

Kensings: I run my vx2435wm at 35% brightness with tweaked rgb gammas for calibration.
If you are worried about accuracy at a lower brightness you may want to try the profile on this site: http://www.digitalversus.com/article-424.html

I found them to be very similar to what I came up with, but it works at 100% brightness.
That is, the calibration profile dims the panel as part of the calibration so you don't have to mess with it.

Btw, as far as the HDMI -> HDMI problem, avoid Viewsonics tech support if you can, they're a waste of time. It really sounds like a Vista/Nvidia driver issue.
Make sure you have the most up to date drivers and dig through all of the driver settings. (I'd try to help more, but I am XP all the way and currently have an ATI card.)

Got my ViewSonic VX2435WM - looks great. Love it. No noticable problems, except it's so stinkin' bright that if I use it at night, it burns my "visual purple" so much that I can't find my way upstairs in the dark afterwards.

1)
A question related to brightness - if I turn the brightness down 50%, where is the reduction coming from? Are they dimming the actual backlight (in which case is there a color shift?) or do they just multiply all the pixel values by 50%, thus turning the 8-bit colors into 7-bit colors? I hope they don't do the latter. I intend to turn it down to some accaptable level and then do a color calibration for photo editing.

2)
Second question, perhaps a little off topic for this forum, but still - I'm hoping one of you can help me with this mystery. When I use this monitor via HMDI directly from my video card, there is about a 1 inch perimeter around the screen that is missing. That is, the "start menu" and windows taskbar and such aren't even visible! The corners are missing - They're off the screen. This happens regardless of any monitor settings (scaling, etc), and regardless of what resolution I use. Examples: If I set scaling to 1:1, (and computer to the monitor's native 1920x1200) I see black border all the way around the screen including where the task bar should be (not just top and bottom!). If I use the monitor's full screen scaling (not 1:1), it now fills the monitor, but the windows taskbar is off the screen too - in other words, the same thing, just larger. Now, if I use the DVI-I out, with a DVI->HMDI adapter, everything works fine at all resolutions. So I belive the problem is in the computer /graphics / Windoze Vista, not in the monitor. I'd really appreciate help, because I intend to use a second montior (CRT) hooked up to teh DVI-I port, meaning I have to get this ViewSonic working with the HDMI port. I've tried web searches, but haven't found any mention of similar issues.

Here's the setup details:

HP computer, NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS,
HDMI out -> ViewSonic HDMI in
can't see the edges of screen area

HP computer, Windoze Vista, NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS,
DVI-I out -> DVI to HDMI adapter -> ViewSonic HDMI in
everything is fine.

Any help is greatly appreciated - I suppose this is a horrible Windows Vista thing, or something to do with all the video copy protection, but all I want is a working video card.

(yes, I know, I should have bought the Mac after all!!!)

- Ken.

I have vista64, 8800GT, and the vx2435wm. Never had any issues at all. Like Doc, I have turned down my brightness into the 30's. Don't have any color issues. The only difference I have is I use the included DVI to HDMI cable to to to the monitor.

I'm wondering if the HDMI port implementation on your card is off somehow or the driver doens't deal too well with the hdmi port or something. Does your GS have a DVI port you can try the included cable on to see if it has a different result? It does send the same signal. I want to ask if you've tried a different HDMI cable, too. Though I don't know that a bad cable could cause the problem you're talking about. Sounds more related to the video card or cable than windows.

It's a different driver, but i've not run into a driver where they got the 64bit part right and messed up the 32 bit version. Usually it's the other way around. We're both vista...just likely he's 32bit.

I've not seen a driver do something like that. Seems like it's mis-positioning the screen somehow. I don't know how that'd happen, though. The fact that it seems to be ok on another machine eliminates the monitor, but not the card, cable, or drivers. I'd still see what happens using the dvi-hdmi cable that comes in the box. If that works, then it's something to do with the hdmi port on the card. Whether it'd be messed up in hardware or driver support, I don't know.

I guess you can take a chance on that. Other options are 22":

ViewSonic VX2255wmb at ~$310 and Acer AL2216WBD at ~$230.

DoctorM and cboath are probably right about the driver issue. Possibly Nvidia didn't get the HDMI display driver correct?

Looking for Dual Monitor Recommendation:

I am looking for this recommendation for my son who asked me to help him build a new computer. Currently I am still favoring my 22 inch Trintron monitor so I am not much help to him.

I have read through the LCD thread including the recommendations. That was quite an effort by the OP. Remarkable in fact. Thank you for that.

My pleasure...at least most of the time. I will continue it despite the drought of decent/VA/IPS panels.

I am still not sure what to do for the dual monitor setup he wants.

I think two 19 inch 5:4 monitors are probably the right choice, but I may be wrong. Seems that anything wider will become too wide I suppose.

What size and which ones do you think would be best for him?

Also, which video card for a dual monitor setup.

Any modern video card with two DVI outputs. At least GeForce 6xxx or Radeon X300 series I'd say. Preferably GeForce 7xxx and whatever the ATI equivalent is these days. X1800?

Of course you're going to want to go at least that much or higher if you're gaming. But if gaming is not an issue any lowly card with two DVI outputs will work (unless, of course, that card has weak DVI outputs for some reason, but this isn't too common).

He wants to do normal computer tasks and also games with occasional photography, but photo editing is not the main emphasis. Two TN monitors? Is that right?

John

Moved here from separate thread with no responses.

TNs certainly sound suitable although of course VA/IPS are always preferred.

I would personally recommend two ViewSonic VP930b (P-MVA) panels. They have treated me great and I think they would work better in a dual setup than a TN since they have a wider viewing angle.

Should that be unavailable, the HP LP1965 (VA-type) is a good secondary option. Avoid the Samsung 971P because it will have more ghosting (bad for gaming).

Thanks you so much for your help.

Regards,
John

Well I went against your advice as I'm sure you could tell I was going to do by my previous posts and got the Samsung 2232BW. I think it is great so far. Colors look 8/10 out of the box and UT3 plays great. I was a little worried about the reports of input lag compared to the 226bw but it isn't noticeable at all over my old 2ms 19 inch lcd. I like the style of this, I don't have an lcd tv so it's new to me and oh yeah zer0 dead or stuck pixels (the other main thing I was worried about). Also, the stand really isn't as bad as some people say as long as you don't need to constantly adjust your screen. I didn't get a Samsung panel but as I'm sure you've seen in that behardware article this one is supposedly calibrated better out of the box than the older Samsung models. I'm sure the Viewsonic would have been good to but I just like how this one looks better and if colors could be any better for a TN I wouldn't know it.

In addition I found out how to tell which Samsung 22 inchers have S panels in them by looking at the serial number on the label of the box. I looked at the stock of about 15 boxes at Best Buy though and none of them followed the format however the display model they had was an S panel of course lmao. I figured out how to do this on lesnumeriques.com

"-- A serial number greater than or equal to P718xxx (known exceptions: the P726 and P729 are not slabs Samsung)."

The L222WT-BF is the black bezel version of the L222WT which is a 21.6" widescreen.

The specifications are right here: http://www.lge.com/products/model/detail/l222wt.jhtml

It should be close to the L226WT except 0.4" smaller, meaning a finer dot pitch. You didn't really get gypped. I haven't seen any professional reviews on it, so I don't know for sure. Only return it if you're really unhappy with it. If you get another unit it might have more problems like dead pixels or backlight bleeding.

Between these, you'd be best to go for the bigger one. They are both Dells and neither is one I recommend because neither has been reviewed by the pros. Beyond that I can't say much about them, but they are both TN panels. You can get a better idea about TN panels by reading the OP.

Hi, I'm looking for a full HD monitor (1080) around 24 inches.

Looking to use it mostly for PS CS3, hd movies, hd gamming (360), hd tv, and a little final cut.. in that order.

Here is what I'm looking at so far:

1.) NEC LCD2470WNX

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ons-_-24002334

This is a good LCD according to many, with only slight ghosting issues. I don't know if it has the right inputs for you?

2.) Dell 2407 wfp (read this has ghosting. anyone confirm?)
http://reviews.cnet.com/lcd-monitors...3.html?tag=tpr

Yes, the 2407WFP-HC's ghosting issues are a good deal worse. I would avoid it if you game a lot. It would be OK but there's better choices for your money.

3.) Any recommendations?

Thank you for your time!

Seeing as the VX2435wm is unsuitable for you, you might try the HP LP2465. I think it's a better deal than the NEC. There is a chance the 2470WNX has less input lag and I've now seen that the 2470WNX's ghosting issue is only minor, so it actually might be a better choice if you can afford it.

Where are you seeing specific Mac issues with the VX24? I do know this display has some slight connectivity issues just based on various reports but it's hard to know for sure if these are just isolated? I'd really like to get to the bottom of it.

BTW, the NEC LCD2470WNX is now recommended in the OP.

It is indeed, but you might try the ViewSonic VX2255wmb (not VX2235). I'm just not sure you'll notice any difference: the bigger the panel, the worse the viewing angle, especially with TNs. You might want to spend a little more and get a better panel like the HP LP2065 (AMVA/S-IPS).

I don't know anything about the X2200W, the normal case with LCDs that have no pro reviews.
