You must be right because I don't see any white glow off axis on my 20WMGX2. Nor do I on my LCD26 but maybe that's because of the true wide polarizer.

I do see an overwhelming violet look to my 20WMGX2 at off-axis, and very slight dark green/red on my LCD26.

I just spent a few hours playing Rome Total War on the Planar 26", and words just cannot describe the difference between this display and the 2470WNX and VP2130b, or any other VA (and remember how happy I was with the 2470, so thats saying alot). The 3D strategy map is so much more rich, vibrant, and alive, and there is NO shifting of color or contrast from one side of the screen to the other. On the PVAs, trees, grass, water, etc. was darker in the center of the screen and lighter on the edges. Dark areas that were featureless black blobs when viewed straight-on are now full of detail and you can tell the darkest grays from black. And maybe its the wide gamut, but I'm seeing colors I never saw before in this game.

Its as good or better than the 21" Trinitron I've been trying to replace. In fact, as far as I'm concerned, its the new 20WMGX2: the image quality of a pro IPS with the speed and low lag of a gaming TN.

If this thing had boobs, I'd marry it.

I really shouldn't but I really had to laugh at your last comment.

Yes, IPS panels have more vibrant midtones whereas VA panels have darker darks, lighter lights, but washed out midtones. IPS panels are more balanced and usually that's the best overall even if it doesn't mean overwhelming dynamic range (black/white).

Ha, yeah they caved in. They are sending me another 20wmgx2 which gets here monday They shipped it fedex overnight friday and they paided for shipping both ways and wavied the $50 fee. When it gets here I have to decide weather to keep the Hp w22007 I just got and sell the 20wmgx2 or keep the 20wmgx2 and somehow get used to the smaller text and icons on it. I'm really liking this HP its much easier to read then the 20mgx2, although it does have 1 stuck small pixel in the upper most right hand corner almost off the screen...

After reading this thread I'm now stuck between two monitors.

Hanns·G HW-223DPB
or
Acer AL2216Wbd

Both are right at the price I want to spend for a 22" monitor. My heart was set on the Hanns-G but now I'm trying to wrap my head around the Acer due to the recommendation on the thread. I am a gamer and I just can't afford 24" monitors right now. So unless there is a 22" gamer model out there or someone has an extra $250 that they'd like to donate, if there are any other models out there, please let me know.

Thank you

After all this I'm still undecided... I'm looking for 24" suitable for gaming and photo editing. Being a game dev 3D artist, photo editing is somewhat important as well, for texturing etc. Extensive use of photoshop / Max / Zbrush / Mudbox. I'm also watching movies... So a great all round 24" would be neat.
Cheers!

http://lagom.nl/lcd-test/ is a good site.

I'm trying to get lcdresource.com back up.

All...firstly, thank you for this thread!

I received a 2208WFP for work and its not going to cut it. The biggest issue appears to be response time giving me serious eye strain, but I've also noticed massive gradients in color where there should be none.

I don't know why you're getting eye strain (could be lack of contrast) but the gradients are due to the TN panel.

I need a "similarly" priced monitor that's going to fix the above two issues - no more than say $150 at the most. What's the cheapest I can go?

$150? Well you're not going to find a monitor that is not a TN for $150. You're probably looking at at least twice that much. How did you get a Dell 22" for $150? Is there some special deal?

At this point, I'm willing to sacrifice resolution for somethjing else. Since this is work, it needs to be available via Dell or HP.

I do all forms of multimedia - seriously long hours of coding (thus a need for resolution), pixel perfect drawing, and printer color-matching. No video and no gaming, but obviously my eyes are sensitive to response time.

Thanks again...

I really think you should invest more in a monitor if you are doing these activities (esp. matching) and you get eye strain from a normal one. Reconsider and let me know what you think. But to be perfectly honest with you I think the HP LP2065 at $350 is your best option. If I were to recommend another TN I'd simply be stabbing in the dark.

Question - if I had the choice to pick one single IPS-based panel for under $500, what would it be?

That's probably what it would be: 2007WFP, if you could guarantee an IPS from that.

But I don't know of any monitors under $500 in the US that are guaranteed S-IPS.

LP2065 and 2007FP are also lotteries, although the LP2065 has been predominantly (or even fully) S-IPS lately.

You'll have to clarify your budget for me. Did you mean $150 over the 2208WFP's price?

ViewSonic VX2255wmb or Samsung 2232BW most likely. The LG L226WTQ is pretty good, as is the HP w2207.

These would have shifting just like the 245BW because they're all TNs. No 22"s around $400 that are non-TNs.

Well, my 2007WFP (S-IPS, thankfully) came in today. Not quite sure what to think yet. It's not horrible, but it definitely has a few problems.

The coating is much stronger than I would have thought. I'm not sure why they felt the need to go so overboard with it. I have an LCD here with much milder anti-glare that seems just as effective at filtering out glare, but it does so without making everything look dusty. Does anyone happen to know what the LP2065's coating is like? Is it this strong?

I felt this way with the 2007FP.

It's also flickering quite noticeably on certain colors (mostly gray), more than my 20WMGX2 did I believe. This alone is probably the biggest problem I have with it, because ironically enough it's flickering just as much -- if not more -- than my CRT does on some colors.

The 2007WFP may use dithering, and actually the LP2065 has this issue as well to my best knowledge.

Response time is also much poorer than I would have expected, but I didn't really buy it to play too many games.

I'm going to use it for a couple of days and see how it goes. Even if I don't like it, I don't know what other options I have. It seems as if all of the 20" IPS panels suffer from the flickering issue, so I'm not sure what else I could possibly try.

By the way, does anyone know whether it's possible to enable ClearType on only one display? It improves text quality significantly on the 2007WFP, but it looks terrible on my CRT.

Sorry I don't believe this is possible. It's possible Vista (newer Windows) has some option to do it, but I've never heard of it.

I don't believe the 20WMGX2 has flickering issues, or at least not dithering on still images.

Need opinions here, would you exchange a LCD that had no back light bleed and worked excellent but had a stuck pixel in the upper most right hand corner almost off the screen where the X would be to close a program?

EDIT: I'm retarded It wasn't a stuck pixel, it was spit splater I've been coughing all week from brochtis and it must have been from that. I got some screen cleaner and cleaned the screen real good, then did dead pixel test again and sure enough it was gone now I'm a happy camper and before anyone says it yes I do cover my mouth when I cough it must have escaped that time

Actually, both of the 20WMGX2s I tried exhibited the "rolling wave" effect that people have complained about on the 2007s and the LP2065 on solid gray. It was all but unnoticeable on most other colors though, and I had to set the brightness quite low for it to show up. I noticed it immediately on the Dell on the other hand, and it definitely affects more than just gray. The first pattern in the flickering test at lagom.nl (the solid gray one) shows the problem more clearly than anything else -- it actually looks worse than a 60Hz CRT there.

Perhaps it's just not as common on the NECs? I can't find many complaints about it on Google, other than this YouTube video that looks pretty much like what I remember seeing.

At any rate, I'm not too pleased with this. The coating and flickering have made desktop work quite unpleasant, which just so happens to be exactly what I bought it for. Would the LP2065 (or anything else, I suppose) be any better for me, and are there any brick and mortar stores that still stock them? Given my previous experiences, it'd probably be a good idea to see it in person first...

Hi!

I just bought samsung 245B, so far im happy with it. No dead pixels, pretty good picture for TN, except vertical angle sucks and the front power button is very wobbly. Overall good monitor (so far) for the price.

I was reading some reviews and forums that samsung 245 model has samsung (S) panel (made in china) and its not a lottery like 226bw model. Mine doesn`t have any S in the back. Model is ls24hubcbq/edc (made in slovakia). Many stores here in europe sell this panel model (ls24hubcbq/edc).

Does anyone have any information about this panel? Is it any worse than "S" and who is the manufacturer?

Monitor was made january 2008 (Slovakia).

Well I don't know anything about the Hanns other than the fact Hanns monitors are usually pretty low on the list, so the well-known Acer AL2216 is your best choice. I'm not sure what your attraction to the Hanns was, specifically?

Take a look at the 24"s recommended under Multimedia. If you can't spend that much, the Samsung 245BW is the best economical option. The ViewSonic VX2435wm seems the best for you since it has a tight gamma curve by default (accurate colors).

Why is it, some people can tell an 8 bit monitor from a 6 bit and others like myself can't tell a difference at all?

I suspect some people are attracted by contrast of monitors rather than their ability to show each tone well. Lots of 6-bit monitors are high in contrast to cover up their inherent flaws in reproducing subtle details.

Look at the right picture and it will become apparent immediately that one monitor is 8-bit (IPS/VA) and the other 6-bit (TN).

(Typically 8-bit is associated with VA/IPS panels that have stable viewing angle, and 6-bit with TN panels that struggle to maintain stability and cause loss of detail.)

Suggestion: Xtknight, have u considered ordering each sub category of the recommendation list in the OP by size (or any other criteria like manufacturer). For me it would make it easier to find a monitor that meets my needs than a list with absolute rankings. Particularly in sub categories with long lists. U cld still add an index of the rankings or 'top 5 list'.

Is their a photo or test I can do to show this? I have my nec 20wmgx2 and my hp w2207 running together using the same wallpaper and they look identical I can't tell the slightest differrence between them.

I am still looking and reading these threads and money is hard to come by when your disables I tell you what! xtknight you are still awesome from the first time you answered my questions. I am now reading on the Planar PX2611W and reads like what I need. Does anybody have one or can shed some light on it for me please? It will be a while before I can do anything but I like to keep thinking in the right direction. TIA, JAS

First of all I'd like to thank xtknight for such a comprehensive resource on lcd monitors, I've recently become interested in buying a wide-screen lcd for gaming and multimedia, for running both my pc and xbox360 through, and this is the best information I've found so-far.

I'm aware that the xbox360 doesn't properly support 16:10 resolutions, something I hope microsoft looks at asap, and that most lcd monitors don't suppport 1:1 or interpollation, but I'm willing to put up with the small amount image stretching atm.

The problem I'm having is a majority of the monitors you recommend either aren't available here, or only available from general electronics stores, rather than computer stores and therefore costing way more than others.

I'm looking at getting a 22" 2ms LCD and the following models seem to be readily available, I'm wondering if you could help me out a little here as to weather they're any good.

22" Asus LCD Monitor VW222U $369
22" LG LCD Monitor - L226WTP $368
22" Samsung LCD Monitor - 226BW $409
22" ViewSonic LCD Monitor - VX2235wm $329

Prices are in Australian Dollars, I'm not sure what panel is in the samsung, but it's more than likely a 'C' panel I'm lead to believe. Out of the monitors listed above the Samsung and LG seem to be the big sellers around here.

Go to

http://www.austin.net.au

If you want to see what else is available around here and the prices, they're pretty much the cheapest/most convienient for me.

Thanks in advance. Also if any other forum members want to comment or help out, feel free.

Regards,
Brendan.
