As one of the first ones to utilize the Westy's and Sceptres here, I would recommend you include my present 1080p HTPC LCD nowadays: Westy 47" LCM (or even the newer TX models with built in tuners).....easily better picture then my previous 37" Sceptres / Westys.

Just want to mention something that i find particular interesting happening in today's consumer market: the marriage of everyday TV's and computers. A couple of days ago I bought my new 52" Samsung LN52A750 LCD HDTV. Having been an ardent HTPC user for years, I was skeptical of the support from the mainstream brands , even with today's newer panels that feature 10 bit display, low 4ms response time, 120 Hz refresh rates, and most importantly Frame Interpolation Engines (FIE)! For those unfamiliar with this new FIE technology, the sets have an internal processor to add additional (interpolated) frames during the reconstruction from 60Hz input to 120 Hz input making fast movement very smooth and fluid, 3D or Soap Opera-sih like. On high definition content, especially CGI based films, it looks amazing! Anyhow, it used to be a hit or miss affair connecting a computer to your average home TV even with the big brands, but now all major players support PC connection natively letting you even bypass most of the internal scalers/electronics if you so wish. It's been a long time coming since about 5 years ago when i first purchased my no-name brand eccentric Sceptre 37" to now a mainstream TV set for PC usage. You really need to see these sets to believe the technology advancement these days! P.S. Here's my new "LCD" : http://i59.photobucket.com/alb.../Computer/IMG_0164.jpg .

That's great news; I also found that my recent Mitsubishi LCD HDTV worked fine with the PC. I am a little unsure what to do with the HTPC section as-is.

If I've read everything correctly, true "120 Hz" still does not exist and 120 Hz is only available with black frame insertion or frame intercalation.

Very bright, maybe too bright. Quickly adopted ToastyX "Calibrated.icc" settings (dialed them in manually), but found it still too bright and lowered brightness to O%. Will check out his alternate low brightness settings 'n see what I think. Thank you ToastyX for your help.

And thank you xknight for this terrific thread. Believe me, I've scoured the web for display info and you have compiled the clearest and most complete and most sensible collection of information out there.

I am not surprised in the least you're thrilled with that upgrade.

30": Samsung SyncMaster 305T, 2560x1600 (16:10)

* Panel: WG S-PVA (Samsung LTM300M1); true 8-bit, 16.7M colors
* Image Delay (rt+lag): 22 - 29.3 - 33
* Specifications: Samsung SyncMaster 305T
* HDCP Compliant: No
* More Info: prad.de
* Price: ~$1,300 USD

NOW, this monitor DOES NOT support HDCP currently. however, i am planning on using it for both HD multimedia (including blu-ray) and playing age of conan. does anybody happen to have information on if and when this monitor WILL support HDCP, or if there is another model that uses the same panel. my budget is pre-college low income but i REALLY want a 30 inch panel, since it can double as a TV for me, especially since i use my computer for everything, and i dont want a TN because they only support (2^6)^3 color. my eyes can really tell a difference between the syncmaster 24 inch TN panel that my buddy has, and the 24 inch IPS panel my dad has at his office (idk the model), but IPS is way to expensive in a 30 inch, being $600 more minimum on average than an S-PVA panel. sure they look great, but just having 8 bit color is enough for me. also, for those who DO game with one of these panels (30 inch S-PVA), how is the monitor's response lag compared to gaming with say a 30 inch IPS? i know the S-PVA has the worst buffer lag of all the panel types and i was wondering if it is really THAT big of an issue. i dont play much FPS before you ask, but i do sometimes, and when i do i always like to have any edge i can get.

thanks in advance! i will check back in a few days for a reply, currently rather busy studying for the CompTIA A+ exam lol

I have heard of a 305T Plus model coming out which might support HDCP (no guarantees).

The 3007WFP-HC has one DVI port w/ HDCP, but it doesn't have very many inputs.

You could try using some switches like these to use either your PC or console on that one DVI port.

http://www.monoprice.com/produ...p?c_id=101&cp_id=10110

Make sure it supports dual-link DVI/HDMI and HDCP.

More specifically this looks like a good solution, http://www.monoprice.com/produ...id=3047&seq=1&format=2

I have not had any personal experience with these, though.

I don't think there are any other 30" options there are that can offer the same connectivity as the Samsung 305T for the same price, which means you'd be stuck without HDCP or with the 3007WFP-HC and a switcher, unless you wanted to pay more and get a Gateway XHD3000.

Are you sure you need a 30" display? A 26" DS-263N offers an H-IPS panel w/ polarizer, and 2 DVI ports with HDCP support. And it's much easier on your wallet. It's renowned for excellent gaming performance with one frame of input lag or less; that's as good as a 19" panel.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...6824185007&Tpk=ds-263n

You might want to ask on the HardForum thread for the DS-263N about specifics regarding connectivity. But AFAIK everything should be fine, no switcher needed.

It would really help if you let me know what devices you have though. I assume you mean PC by "Age of Conan". Blu Ray can come from a PC, PS3, or Set Top Box. It also depends what ports your device has on the back of it (HDMI, DVI, VGA, component...)

Usage for this monitor will be 1/3 text work, 1/3 movie watching, and 1/3 gaming. What do you guys think of this monitor and is it worth it for this price?

Hard to answer when there are no pro reviews. It's certainly worth a try if you can buy it locally and return it if need be. It would be nice to hear some thoughts on it if you go that route.

The G2400W is not available locally so this might even be a worse option overall for you if you can't return it at all or easily. It may be the best 24" TN available. http://www.newegg.com/Product/...16824014158&Tpk=g2400w

The w2207 is standard gamut but not as good screen quality wise. I would take a look at the ASUS VW222u (standard gamut) if I were you.

i don't think they carry asus monitors at best buy or circuit city? i'd prefer to buy something locally so i can return it easily if i don't like it. this is going to be my first lcd monitor. i think i'll go to best buy and circuit city tomorrow to look over some monitors...any other monitors i should look at? i was going to buy one of those refurbed 20" necs but after seeing all the problems people are having i think i'll pass.

This is understandable, it just limits your options. There probably won't be much difference between the w2207 and other 22" panels you get at Best Buy. I'm assuming you liked the look of the w2207 when you saw it? If so, honestly, just go for it. The ASUS VW222u is not a glossy panel like the w2207. There's probably not a giant difference between the VW222u and w2207; they're both 22" TNs. Although, the ASUS just seemed to have very tight quality.

well i have the l227wtg in my possesion. i thought it was the best looking monitor best buy had on display, better than the samsung 2232bw. the samsung looked kind of washed out compared to the lg. i'll post some thoughts after i've played with it for a bit.

Squidmaster:
I recently understood that the light spectrum of CCFL backlights might be a cause for eyeproblems etc. Its the same issue you get with office/factory flourescent lighting. Although with the monitor the light is filtered through the crystals. On the other hand you are staring straight at it all the time.

As I understand it the light from a CRT is different. And also LED displays have a different type of spectrum. LED displays are more expensive however and they have some technical advantages but also a few disadvantages compared to CCFL. Anyhow, LED might be something to try and look out for. Our CRTs wont last forever.

Yeah, I am worried that may be a problem for me, but I don't think there are LED monitors out there either. It's a pickle.

Hi,

I'm wondering what a good widescreen alternative to the HP LP2065 would be. I've seen some mention of the DELL 2007WFP but its not so easy to come by as it is out of production.
Any of the newer wide gamut models stand up? The A8 version of the HP goes for about $300 with rebate so I'd be hard pressed to justify going over $400.

I'm planning to get 2 to hook up to a Matrox Dual Head 2 Go Digital Edition for programming and some photo work. They will also be used by someone much shorter than me so viewing angle matters. I would like USB ports so I can use them as a docking station for my laptop and plug in my mouse and keyboard. I don't want a glossy screen.

also, any clues to telling if a monitor is S-IPS without opening the box?
what's the difference between the EF227A4#ABA and EF227A8#ABA versions of the HP (other than price)

know any vendors that have decent return policies if there are issues?

Thanks!!

I don't know of any wide gamut 20" widescreens. But at that size you can expect only TNs.

About the EF227A4 you can search about that in this thread. Basically, nobody really knows. But, it's not a huge loss at 20" if you get an MVA instead of an IPS. You have to be ready to expect an MVA with either model. You don't really have any other choices, anyway.

20" widescreen VA or IPS panels no longer exist so you can throw that size out of the equation when it comes to photo editing. In fact, the LP2065 is virtually your only option at 20-22" either aspect.

I am not sure how HP's policy is, but you won't be returning in any shape or form if you order from Newegg. It's not available at Dell.

There used to be a code on the outside of the box where GSM* meant S-IPS and AMM* meant AMVA; I'm not sure if this is still there or not. Check the HardForum thread on it.

I think you will be thrilled with the LP2065 for photo editing and especially text use, although it can reach its best with a colorimeter (for photo editing).

I have no experience with that, sorry. Maybe the DoubleSight DS-263N is decently close to what you need? LCD2490WUXi? Although perhaps you were looking at the Hazro because of price, but I don't know if it would be any cheaper by the time it got over here.

The light spectrum of a CCFL is certainly different from that of LEDs and is quite different from that of the visible light spectrum that we get from the sun that is filtered through our atmosphere. The light coming out of a backlight unit (BLU) is also filtered in many ways: first it has the back polarizer, then the color filter and then the front polarizer. I'm no optometrist (my wife is), but I will say that polarized light is much easier on your eyes than non-polarized light. That's one of the reasons why polarized sunglasses is better for your eyes since it filters out light that bounces off of the ground, especially when you're driving. My wife did say that she sees more eye problems with patients who use large CRT monitors compared to those who use LCD monitors. She also recommends resting your eyes every 1 hour.

Ok I've found some good settings. I had the brightness too high which was killing my eyes. I'm coming from a 19" viewsonic crt and I'm not too dissapointed with this lg. I'm running dvi from my 9800 pro. The first time I saw this monitor it must have been in "movie" mode because the colors look pretty natural to me now. The glossy screen really gives the colors "pop" which I like. Games on this monitor are damn good. There's very little ghosting and barely any black crush at all (which is very suprising). The 4:3 mode is excellent. Games are completely playable at any 4:3 resolution above 1152x864 with aspect ratio correction. Running games at 1024x768 and below the image quality suffers pretty badly though. The only really bad things about this monitor are the viewing angles and there's too much "noise" for watching movies. Even with all the ffdshow tweaks I've done, movies still look bad on this monitor.

oh and i also compared this to the w2207h and the lg is better.

If you are a heavy multiplayer gamer the XHD3000 is renowned to have excessive input lag. It would be great for console gaming, but not nearly as good with computer multiplayer FPS games. I have also heard that the input lag rises if you get the XHD3000 to scale up lower resolutions. The best thing is to set your video card to scale up to 2560x1600 resolution and play games at lower resolutions in order not to get a performance hit from scaling or trying to run games at specifically the 2560x1600 resolution that is native to this screen.

LG has a new W3000H monitor that has HDCP, 30" S-IPS wide gamut screen, and the same scaling options as the Dell. My only caveat with this screen is the super wide gamut which will oversaturate colors and can be difficult to calibrate. It is comparable in price to the 305T and generally cheaper than the Gateway XHD3000.

Although I thought LG's new monitor would be TN in the US, you might try 10e's suggestion and wait for it.

Many monitors have buzzing which stems from having a brightness under 100% (PWM takes place to lower brightness). Nothing you can do about it.

There are settings for the L227WTG in the Monitor Profiles thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/me...id=31&threadid=2002685

I don't know where to post this. This is an awesome but overwhelming thread. A search brings up older posts and I would like more current information. Maybe someone can help. Hopefully I'm not out of line posting here.

I was using an NEC 20WMGX2 with a 913T Samsung for palletes. Because of back problems I've rigged up a place where I can stand for awhile and then go back and sit for awhile. This meant I had to split the monitors up. I mirror them for most purposes, but since that sacrifices a lot of space on the widescreen NEC (to match the older Samsung) I switch from mirrored to using together as a set for photo editing. The physical distance means I am limited to the 20" NEC for photo editing and ignore the Samsung.

I only used part of the Samsung and hope to find a good 26 to 30 inch monitor for editing. I've searched but not found any site as comprehensive as this one.

Questions: Without straying too far from a $1,000 price, could you recommend some monitors for me to research further? I am using a Mac Pro. When I bought the NEC, the Apple Cinema didn't get the greatest reviews.

Is it hard/impossible to find a good 30 inch monitor that will not be soon replaced by new technology? Is there new technology around the corner that I should wait a few months for? I think my card was set up for a 30 inch Apple Cinema when I bought it six months ago (the Nvida that came with the Mac Pro), but I will need to be sure before I make a final decision.

Would be very thankful for any advice.
Peggy
