I?ve just been told by the powers that be/accountant/business partner/wife that we can conceivably go up to a grand on this (e.g., the Planar PX2611W 26"). Would doing so put me into a different tier of display, or just garner a marginal improvement? I?m not keen to spend just because I can, but if there is a sharp difference, I?d like to consider it. (Kind of like moving from one model of car to another is an incremental improvement (more cupholders!) but going from, say, a Honda to an Accura is a sizable leap).

Again, thanks for your reply and the fantastic content of the thread. I think I mentioned most of my work is for non-profits?when the display arrives I?ll take on a pro bono project, kind of my own way of giving back to the community (albeit in a roundabout way).

I have the LCD2690 but I have to say that at its price it was not worth it over the DoubleSight DS-263N. You can grab the DS-263N, which is full of the same electronics, and also get a colorimeter and you'll be well on your way to success. The hardware LUT (calibration) capabilities of the 2690 simply don't make up for that price difference. There just isn't that much difference. And there's nothing with a better value than the DS-263N now for an H-IPS (w/ polarizer) panel; that's just how the market is.

(The main reason I got the LCD2690 was actually because neither the DS-263N nor the PX2611W was around when I was shopping.)

On a 22" you could get 1080p downscaled, but I'm not sure which LCDs do this. If you want a 22" that does 1080p you're probably going to have to look on HardForum for the LCD in question, maybe with the keyword PS3 or Xbox.

Most 24"s show 1080p natively just fine. They also have much better support for consoles in general. Are any of the 24" non-TNs listed in the OP available in your area for that price? If not, you may have to raise your budget or start taking a look at the 22"s. All the 22"s that are an acceptable price are TNs except the Lenovo L220X, which I'm not sure could deal with consoles. Going with a 24" TN may be a better idea over a 22" TN, for what you want to do, due to better support for connections and scaling. I recommend the BenQ G2400W for a 24" TN.
Alright thanks for the info, I've looked into it and the BenQ looks like a good monitor, just one question though, i hear TN isn't good for movies (ie. bluray), but i'm not thaaaat picky, does it really make much of a difference? PC and PS3 gaming is much more important for me XD

xtknight,

I am looking for a 24 inch screen to be use for internet, gaming from both PC and my 360 as well as watching movie and TV. After considerable amount of research I found that the NEC LCD2490WUXI seems to fit my needs due to its high quality panel, relatively low input lag and its high viewing angle. However due to its high price tag several questions arises to justfy if its worth paying the extra. By the way I am from Australia so cannot get some of the popular model such as the Doublesight.

1. I'm looking to be keeping this screen for at least 4 years as a primary use for everything and around 24 inch size seems to be perfect for my room. I am just wondering if the quality of the screen is much different to other monitor like Dell 2408wfp for my use? is it worth paying the extra for?

2. How is the quality of picture of this monitor on tv, movie, gaming, compare to that of a high end 30/32" television?

3. My xbox 360 is the original version and doesn't have hdmi connection, how is the quality signal over vga on this

thank you and appreciate your help

This thread is awesome. I had a couple questions though.

I am about to get two monitors. One 24" and one 22". Both will be used for general office work, web browsing etc... The 24" will also double as a screen for movies, tv, and my PS3. The 22" will be for PC gaming (just because my video card can't handle the native res of a 24" with all the eye candy on).

So considering that, it seems like BenQ G2400W and LG L227WTG are good choices. While looking around, it seems like there's a slightly new revision of the BenQ monitor, the G2400WD. I'm not sure what's different, the specs seemed pretty much the same. And I found a non-glossy version of the LG monitor for sale in the US from amazon, so that was good.

Is there anything else I should be looking at? Is there a reason to get the G2400W over the G2400WD?

I think the TN will be enough for now-and-then movie purposes.

To be perfectly honest, I think you'd be really happy with the Dell. It is a pretty good value, and it has more multimedia inputs. If you're more of a graphics enthusiast or photo editor then the LCD2490 is a good idea. For long distance and multimedia, S-PVA panels are fine. Keep in mind the LCD2490/2690 do not support 1080i! Yes, it is quite the rip off.

2. How is the quality of picture of this monitor on tv, movie, gaming, compare to that of a high end 30/32" television?

About the same or better, for both the 2408 and LCD2490. However, a TV is typically simply brighter.

I can't answer this but I'd assume it would be decent. Try looking for HardForum or even asking about specific experiences with a model because a lot of people pair them with Xboxes or PS3s.

The G2400WD is seemingly no different except for the extra dynamic contrast feature. I can not confirm this however and the G2400W base model is a great choice. You would be missing little, nothing, or getting more by getting the G2400W.

The L227 is also what sticks out to me for a 22" choice. It is good you took a look at the OP for this, instead of picking the first result off Dell.com.

You might want to consider a 24" VA panel, as recommended in the Multimedia section, like the 2408WFP if you can afford it. I think it's a better multipurpose panel than the G2400W.

My NEC LCD2690WuXi-BK does a fabulous job with the Xbox 360 over VGA and HDMI. HDMI is slightly sharper but the difference is extremely small. You will be able to use all the custom resolutions of the Xbox with confidence on the LCD2490.

The only monitor that even comes close is my BenQ FP241VW, but the color calibration is not on par with the LCD2490WuXi-BK.

There is the Anandtech comparison review and it came out pretty well.

I compared this monitor to my G2400W and found it was better in some ways and not as good in others. Here's a quick rundown:

1) The BenQ has very slightly better viewing angles, but a fair bit better color calibration. The Samsung 2493HM needs more tweaking to display accurate dark colors. Dark greys turn brown on the Samsung, but not on the BenQ.
2) Panel seems to have more visible dithering on the Samsung (again) with dark colors
3) HDMI on Samsung is good quality, but aspect ratio control is sorely lacking. The BenQ does this a lot better, and only has issues with 1920x1080 over VGA and 480p over HDMI. The Samsung has some AV mode which stretches 1080p to full height and cuts off 5% of each side to preserve the aspect ratio.
4) Touch buttons on Samsung are painful to use and hard to see. Buy a flashlight.
5) Samsung comes with height-adjust stand and USB.
6) Samsung has a high quality scaler, but the quality comes at cost. Input lag goes up when scaling lower resolutions.

It's a solid monitor for PC, or multi-PC use but not great for BluRay or consoles. If you are going to use it and have your video card do the scaling it will be fine.

PS: Most, if not all of my comments apply to the Samsung 2693HM as well.

Would the NEC LCD2690WUXi be overkill for gaming and occasional dvd watching? I don't care about price and just want the highest quality 24-26" non-TN LCD for gaming.

xtknight what 22" monitor do you recommend for a $270 budget, I want to game(Age of Conan) and watch HD movies using it(off of PC). The cheaper the better, allows me to put more money into performance parts for my PC.

HDCP isn't important.

Hi xtknight,

I bought a couple NEC Multisync 20WMGX2's a while back and on my dad's I get this video input blue box that pops up and stays on for a while unless you wait long enough or hit the menu key on the remote. This occurs if you log off and want to log back on and the box actually blocks the log in area.. and it just doesn't like to go away.. it is very annoying.

I know you have owned the monitor. Did you ever have this problem? Any idea on how to get this blue 2 3/4 inches wide by 1 1/4 inch high video input box from displaying in the just below center middle part of the Monitor or to at least make it go away faster???

I can see that Philips 230WP7NS has been removed from the list because it has been discontinuet. However, at lest here in this part of the world, it is still in the (web) shops and in stock. Can anyone tell me where is was in the recommendation list so I can see if it is worth going for (price is quite attractive now).

So a ways back I asked about comparing the Samsung 275T to the NEC LCD2690. After some thought though, I decided to wait and save up a little more to get a 30". Now I'm looking at the 305T and the LCD3090WQXi. The 305T has a huge cost benefit in it's corner (almost a $1000 less than the 3090), while the 3090 has an IPS panel and has excellent image quality reportedly.

My questions are the following:

How are these 30" screens in general? Will the lag be much worse than a 27"? Will ghosting be awful if I'm doing any animation work (recreational, not profesional) on these?

Does the 305T have high gamut or not? Samsung reports it at 102% NTSC in their T-series brochure (Higher than the 275T+) but I've read reviews that said it doesn't have high gamut. Was their a product refresh somewhere that improved the backlight?

Finally, does anyone know if there is a forthcoming DoubleSight version of the LCD3090?

Thanks in advance.

hey all, i have been reading a lot of threads about 24" monitors and i am trying to decide on one under $500....it will be used for gaming/blu ray. So far i have picked out the Samsung 2493HM, the Gateway FHD2400 and recently the BenQ G2400W after reading this thread. The only one i have seen in person is the fhd2400 and i really really like glossy panels but the reviews on its color accuracy have been less than stellar. Are there any other 24" lcds i should be looking at as well? Thanks for any help you guys can offer me!

BUT, can anyone who has used or knows about both the BenQ G2400W and the new V2400w answer
which is REALLY better? Especially for gaming on PC and Xbox 360 HDMI? Because check out the Face to Face comparison and the G2400W is actually WAY FASTER with LESS LAG???

http://www.digitalversus.com/d...&mo2=304&p2=2943&ph=12

Any reviewers please chime in on your thoughts of which of the two are better. I also went to Best Buy and looked at the Gateway FHD2400 (since I need HDMI and DVI-D HCDP) and I could not stand that the monitor totally changed colors and darkened when you move your head up or down at all. I also heard that you can not have your computer hooked up DVI and get your post/bios screen to show. Is this true? I am coming from using a Samsung 214T which is a 1600x1200 21inch MVA screen. The colors and viewing angles are excellent, but I need widescreen 1080p now and a faster panel for games. I don't want to waste $500 on a monitor I can't stand, especially if better technology (better viewing angles, especially vertically and less lag/faster response) monitors are coming out soon. Obviously I am looking for the best looking, fastest for gaming, and has both HDMI and DVI with HDCP for use with PC (DVI and need to see my bios!), Xbox 360 HDMI, and future blue ray. I would rather be able to pick up the Gateway FHD2400 locally at Best Buy in case of stuck pixels or backlight problems for an easy return, but if one of the BenQ's are way better for all my needs (like any gamer), I would risk going mail order.
Please help....

P.S. A little off topic, but if money is not an issue (if well spent, futureproof), would I be better off just getting a
nice 120hz Sony or Samsung 32-40" 1080P HDTV to use as a PC monitor and for the XBOX 360? I know the picture
and viewing angles on the HDTVs are way better than any 24" monitor, but how do you know the real response time
and lag on a HDTV? Are they faster or slower than these 24" monitors and how do they look (internet/text wise) as
a computer monitor?
Thanks

thestain,

Some things to try: Bring up the 20WMGX2's menu and go to the Tools tab. Have you tried moving the OSM Position? Also, you could try changing the OSM Turn Off value. If the blurb is about screen resolution and not input source, you could also try turning off the Resolution Notifier.

If none of that works, you might consider setting it back to the Factory Defaults and then re-customize things (the reason I say that is because my video source notifier only stays on the screen for a couple of seconds -- maybe it got changed someplace on yours, but where that would be, I don't know).

Thats exactly what I did. After people posting here telling me I could not go above 1368x768 or what not on an HDTV. I bought a Toshiba 52xf550, 52inch. 10-bit panel. This thing looks amazing! The color is so vivid when gaming. Of course, most modern big screens don't suffer from the lag the older sets did, and to boot it has a gaming mode that bypasses all post processing. The picture quality is much better than any other LCD I tried.

No problems running this @ full 1920x1080, 1:1 pixel.

Just goes to say, don't believe everything you read on forums, so much bad info being passed around. And also, trust your own judgement.

HI,

I'm planning to purchase a LCD monitor for gaming and Xbox 360/PS3 . I have my attention on Dell SP 2208WFP 22" and Dell E248WFP 24".

1) Please suggest me which one should I get
2) Is there any other alternatives(at the same price r/ange) from any other brands like LG, Viewsonic etc?
3) Which is the cheapest 24" LCD available in market

If price isn't an issue, then go for it. It certainly can still be better for these activities particularly due to its good viewing angles and wide gamut. You're probably aware TNs do not have the input lag of VA/IPS gaming panels.
