And my question is: can a 22 inch LCD monitor with a native res. of 1680x1050 will be able to scale to 1600x1200 resolution? It's because i prefer 1600x1200 res. in gaming...

Any comments, and recommendations? Thanks for your advices in advanced...

Sorry, as far as I know, 1600x1200 scaling on a 1680x1050 LCD is impossible. I tried all the advanced options in the NVIDIA control panel here and I can't get my 20.1" LCD to go in that mode at all. I've never heard of anyone doing it. It may be technically possible but I don't see the options.

An HP LP2065 (1600x1200, around $400) could be a great choice for you. But a Dell 2407WFP-HC (only $680, good deal compared to LP2065!) can do 1920x1200.

"NEC AccuSync ASLCD203WXM-BK"

I want a 20WMGX2, but I can't afford it. But I don't need the TV tuner or speakers, so I wish they offered a cheaper model without those in the US.

That's a TN (I believe there was someone who asked the exact same thing a few pages back). Sadly I know nothing about it, except for that.

The H-w22 is the value offering, no doubt a TN panel: http://www.agneovo.com/global/products/h-w22.htm . It's available here on pre-order for £191.84.

The E-w22, well I'm not qualified to say...it's certainly housed more impressively than the H: http://www.agneovo.com/global/products/E-W22.htm . It's available here on pre-order for £280.73 which is really quite expensive if it is indeed also a TN panel.

Their top of the line one, the X-w22, is much more interesting however. Here's a brief on it: http://www.centenna.eu/Upload/...uction_V2_20070601.pdf , and the main product page: http://www.agneovo.com/global/products/X-W22.htm . Doesn't the mention of colour saturation higher than 92% indicate it's a wide gamut monitor? Anyway, it's on pre-order here for £552.11, which is away up in Eizo territory. Surely it can't possibly also be a TN panel?

Even the X-w22 looks like an overpriced TN (170/160 viewing angle tips it off). It makes sense since there are no non-TN 22"s in existence yet. The 92% saturation does mean high gamut, yes.

On a side note, you notice something funny with all those 22"s in the THG.ru review. Pretty much all of them have downright crappy, unacceptable response times for this day and age. It's unbelievable. But most of them probably use Chi Mei panels, too.

Then there's the 226BW "S" panel that passes the response time test with flying colors (10 ms). It's just too bad the "S" panel isn't more widely available. The smartest business move for Samsung would be to boost the production of the "S" panels and sell them to everyone else. They would really have a stranglehold on the market with such a good panel.

Chi Mei actually demonstrates a lot of interesting and innovative technologies at the conventions but their actual products are pretty low end compared to Samsung and LG Philips. They need to up the ante a bit. AUO and CPT can probably put out better panels than CMO these days. (I'm not going to go as far as HannStar being better though. ) It kind of seems like they're in dire straits when it comes to putting out high quality desktop displays. They must be raking in the money by controlling the market with all those cheap 22" panels. When it comes to image quality they didn't even make it to the quarterfinals, though. Weren't we talking about barely-visible desktop icons awhile back?

The 226BW I saw at the store was only mediocre (not even close to the L226WT) so it probably was an AUO or CMO. Coulda been a 225BW actually, can't really remember.

I've come across a pretty cool new site, PigsterWiki (daily news on new LCDs and discussions/reviews/forum links). That'll certainly help sort out the mess that is finding LCD reviews on the web. Even RSS feeds...somebody please tell me I'm not just dreaming. I have no idea how he maintains all this. :Q

The Resources section has been expanded to include many useful sites. I even came across at least a couple reviews of the ViewSonic 24" that was asked about in here.

Black NEC Multisync 1545v LCD for $60 is this a good deal? I don't know much about LCD's but I've been looking for a cheap one that will be used rarely for basic needs, no multimedia or gaming.

I found some info about the new 22-inch wide panel in the upcoming LG L227WTS monitor. The panel is LM220WE3, as pointed out by xtknight when he found out about this monitor. The panel is now on the LG-Philips web site:

Link

and is due for July production. Compared to the previous LM220W1, the main change is the 92% color gamut. High color gamut seems to be spreading fast.

There is also a model number for a new 24-inch TN panel, but no specs are currently shown.

Will having this higher gamut colour really be much of an improvement for these TN panels? I also wonder if they will be charging a big price premium for them over the older models. If it's not too much extra then I guess I could maybe hold out for one of them, although with production only starting in July...I guess it will take quite some time for them to appear in stores.

Do you have any opinions on this 24" Acer AL2416WB?

Not to be mistaken with the AL2416WBsD which is TN.

It seems to have a viewing angle of 178d but I can't seem to find any opinions on it.

Got my monitor today! This thing is huge, I had to move stuff around on desk to make room. hehe

Initial thoughts: No dead pixals, easy to setup. Says"NO DVI signal" until you reset computer. Maybe its that way with all LCD monitors with DVI I guess? /shrug Kind of scary at first thinking its broke

I watched a few minutes of The Fountain in 1080p. Looks sexy! Not sure if this screenshot does it justice but here it is anyways..

Monitors with high color gamut have already started to appear. There is a 30-inch Dell and the just released Dell 2407WFP-HC, Also, the Samsung 226CW is a 22-inch wide-gamut monitor and is already on sale in Canada.
Prices are a bit higher with the 226CW vs the 226BW, but not with the Dells.
All major panel makers are announcing wide-gamut panels.

Here is X-Bit Labs' opinion about wide gamut monitors

Whatever the true utility, it seems that wider gamut is a selling feature and that within a short period of time, all newly-designed LCD panels will have it.

I have no idea what to expect with that but you don't have much to lose for $60.

The higher gamut will be a good improvement to TN technology, which can use as many improvements as it can get. Will it match a MVA+high gamut display? Of course not, but it'll at least be that ("--") much closer.

I'd expect the L227WT to be $100 more than the L226WT.

Good find, I don't know much about it. I'll have to keep an eye open for reviews/etc. Price looks great and the viewing angle (if it was quoted correctly) indicates an 8-bit P-MVA.

Played some games on the Dell HC 24 inch, played Eve online, Insurgency (HL2 mod), Battlefield 2, and CoH on it tonight, did not notice any problems. I do recommend something BETTER than 8800GTS for FPS on this monitor, in native Rez it got choppy when action got intense. Bf2 being not true widescreen might of been the culprit because it stretches to fit (looks kinda crappy, but playable). That is only if you play FPS games, Eve online and other RTS games was not a problem, but its hard for FPS to keep up with native Rez, perhaps a SLI setup would suit my needs better eventually.

I have not noticed any issues that you would not want to see,no backlight bleeding, text is readable, no ghosting in games, etc.

The only thing I did notice, which is easy corrected if you put monitor in "Entertainment" setting is color white in movies gets blurry. But as long as you have it in entertainment setting its fine. I'm guessing that just changes contrast/gamma to made movies seem better? IDK Other than that movies colors look fine to me. I'm using Nvidia drivers on website for Vista 32bit on BFG 8800GTS 320meg one if you are wondering.

I just got my non HC 2407 and it is glorious. No dead pixels and the little things on a $600 monitor really do make for a more enjoyable experience (monitor stand, pip, pbp, 1:1). This thing really is large though so make sure you see one in a store to decide if you really need one this big

xtknight, what do you think about the 20' mac monitor?

http://store.apple.com/1-800-M...01B&nclm=AppleDisplays

I'll be using it for alot of games, and also for photoshop. I don't need an industrial grade color correct lcd, I just need one that can do everything pretty well.

I have been looking at some of your recommended lcd's but they are just too ugly for me, this is about the only decent looking monitor around. The whole things aluminum, crazy!

Ah well, I managed to get time to make a trip to a local store to check out some LCD monitors and ended up walking out with a Samsung 931BW. Seeing it side by side with the HP w2207 (which is what I had thought I would be leaving with) I honestly couldn't tell any difference in the quality of their pictures. The samsung they had on display was labelled as an A panel (is the lottery not just limited to 206/226bw's?) but it looked great and they actually had it hooked up via the analogue connector so I somehow doubt they had spent any time calibrating it. One thing that shocked me was just how big the w2207's footprint was. I don't recall seeing it mentioned in any of the reviews I'd seen but it would have ended up taking up just as much space on my desk as my CRT did (one of my main reasons for getting an LCD was to save space). All in all, I couldn't justify the extra £70 being asked for the w2207, and they scuppered any chance of me buying the w1907 by it only having an analogue connector.

The 931bw I bought is an unlabelled panel (but in that hidden system menu it shows as 'M-MD19W0CLa-1000'). I can't pick out any dead pixels. In terms of backlight bleed there is a centralized band along the top, perhaps a third of the length of the panel, which is quite noticeable when watching a movie at night. The blacks aren't really all that black I have to say, but the colours seem quite good actually (no noticeable bias towards one in particular). Admittedly I've yet to do any calibrating, but the picture out of the box hasn't disappointed. I've also seen no ghosting at all playing a variety of different games.

Do you guys think it's a good bet that Samsung will be shipping 'S' panels initially for the 226CW? Or would they immediately outsource them again?

xtknight, how od you think the CW would compare to the LG L226WT? Is the L227WT LG's new monitor with the 92% HC?

Is there a monitor test program I can use to show you guys how it performs when I get it? I don't have a good digital camera to post pics sadly.

Test images are generally inconclusive. Just give your subjective impressions of it, that'll be awesome. Your eyes are the best tool for judging your monitor. Actually, a colorimeter is better but I'm guessing one is not in your possession...

I am looking into the Samsung 216BW. Unfortunately, its about the top of my price range (~$250). I'm aware this is a TN, but viewing angles and colour fidelity are not so important to me - I am more interested in a good, aesthetic and relatively fast panel which will serve well for gaming and video on my 8800GTS 320MB. My last panel was a 17-inch, 25ms Active-Matrix LCD which ghosted like crazy, so it's about time to upgrade. Apparently, the 216BW is the same as the 226BW, but 21.6 inches instead of 22, correct? Also, this should be a Samsung panel considering samsung stated that they will only be using their own panels from now on. The price for this monitor is around $250, which is what I want to be paying. Any opinions from xtknight and you guys?

You can trust Samsung about as much as a toddler but yes the 216BW is 21.6" and also probably a TN. Response time..hmm I'm guessing around 20 ms in reality with no overdrive but I could be wrong. It's not going to be amazingly fast but probably better than the 17" you've got. Input lag may be nil if it doesn't use overdrive but this is another guess.

For the price range, if it turns out half decent that's probably one of your best choices short of a lucky, cheap-find ViewSonic VP930b (P-MVA). The Acer AL2051W (8-bit P-MVA) is another choice you really, really should be looking at [in fact, maybe the best in that price range]. The Samsung 205BW isn't all that bad either, but its advantages over the 216BW may be nonexistent.

Well, I'll be opening it in about halfhour to hook up to my new rig. I'll give my impressions then.

Yeah..they're not quite as quick as CRTs for syncing to a signal.

Keep in mind though those are printscreens, so they don't capture the monitor's characteristics.

My main question would be: do the photos comparing the 2407 and 2407-HC actually look the same on the 2407-HC itself? Does the HC's picture reveal more detail and look more natural here?:
