I think the following is not only realistic, but what many of us want. Tell me what you guys think:

Let's start with Doublesight's 263N for $700 - I think these tweaks to its specs could be done to make a near ideal monitor for everybody:

-better chasis/stand: ~$50
-led backlight with local dimming: ~$150
-polarizer: ~$50
-more inputs with good scaler ~$50

There you go, the ultimate monitor for $1000. Unlikely HP, NEC, or Samsung will make this, since they have monitors with some of these killer features (but with important gaps in feature set) but expect professional-level pricing from them ($1500+). If the 263N was available still I was going to go with that one, but it's not. I was tempted by then BenQ v2400, but TN's limitations deter me. I look at the 24" NEC and get tempted, but the input lag is not as good as Doublesights, and inputs are lacking, I look at others, and the scaler sucks...

It's not so much price that's been holding me back, but if I'm paying a premium for a uber monitor, I want it all. It annoys me that Samsung has a 40" LCD TV with LED backlighting with local dimming for a song, yet that feature in a computer monitor suddenly makes it worth an order of magnitude more.

So, what are YOU guys willing to pay for an uber-monitor? I'd say if it had all the above, I may even part with $1200.

Looking at the recommendations it seems the Samsung Syncmaster 226BW gets a good write up, and it recommended by trustedreviews, however looking at the dates it was released over a year ago

Has anything released since overtaken this monitor? Not looking to buy top end stuff but willing to pay a bit more for a decent monitor

Thanks in advance

You pretty much have the option of the more expensive Lenovo L220X which will deliver great all-around performance and good viewing angles, or the LG L227WTG which is a little lighter on viewing angles but an even better gaming performer. I think the first thing you're wondering is how much better the L227WT is at gaming: well, probably not that much. The L220X used to be $400 but is now $500: link

Also the LG L227WT looks very good too.
I am using a Mitsubishi 19" CRT,but its jumping up from the bottom sometime.
I am into race sims big time, especially iRacing and also do Photoshop. What would be your choices ?

20WMGX2 is not available any longer.

The L227WT I suppose is fine for basic, non-critical Photoshop work. You may want to consider using the color profile.

Yup, that would be great. Keep on dreaming...

I would probably just end up getting a TV personally. But I don't think it's truly worth over $1000. I may wait until it comes down in price, or if I'm utterly insane go and impulse-buy it for $1500 in some sort of manic phase. It's hard to say. It better be a damn good monitor.

A much as I try doing my own research, I need help picking a new gaming monitor.

Cliff notes:
- bought an LG L207WT
- had a stuck pixel, took it back to store
- turns out mine was the last one they had, they're not ordering any more either
- I can pick a different monitor in the same price range
- The more I research, the more confused I get

What I need:
- Very low response time
- Image quality (contrast, color accuracy, sharpness etc)
- Non-glossy screen
- Wide gamut would also be nice, but I'm willing to let that go in favor of the others

What I don't need:
- View angle
- Wall mounting ability
- 22": 20 is enough, but I obviously don't mind 22 either

With that in mind, here's the list of monitors I could get:

20":
Samsung 2032BW
Samsung 2043WM
Samsung 2053BW
Samsung 206BW
Samsung T200

22":
Asus VW222S
LG W2242T
LG W2252V
Samsung 2243BW
Samsung 2253LW

I tried my best reading up on all of them, but I just can't decide. Any input would be appreciated.

This thread is a monster...quick question: is the LG L227WT still the best option for a gaming lcd in the 20-24inch range? at $250 it seems too good to be true. thanks.

What about the new Apple? Okay, no polarizer, no inputs (but a switch should be no problem, who the hell uses analog inputs anymore) and almost certainly no local dimming. But an LED backlight, and "probably" an IPS panel, for $899? Sure, they're gonna gouge you another $100 for a proprietary connector to use for DVI, but what monitor with those features were you going to buy for $1000 anyway? Though I suppose that price is too close to the NEC...

Still, it depends on the performance of the monitor and the LED backlight, which is yet to be seen. It had better be IPS...

i've just recieved my LG L227WT - haven't had chance to do anything other than unbox it and have a look, the options quickly reduced to 1 when i look at the prices in the UK - LG was £165, Lenovo was getting close to £300 - having already overspent on my new system i couldn't justify the additional expense when the thing will mostly be tested by movies and games

besides, i'm pretty sure either would be a serious step up from the 17" Syncmaster 73v i have at the moment!!!

My eyes starts to hurt and i start getting head aches when i play games such as fallout 3, crysis, half life 2 (though i experience zero problems with WoW)
What is causing this ? My eyes have never been particulary good, which i guess could be part of the problem. Atm i use a 17" non-widescreen ViewSonic 274 (or something like that)
What kind of properties do i need to not sprain my eyes so much when i game ? Is it purely in the ms or are there other factors ?

Ok I was all set to get my dad a 19 inch 1280x1024 normal LCD. Now he tells me he likes the glossy coating on my 22 inch. So what 19 inch with 1280x1024 resolution has glossy coating?

Otherwise, keep the V2400W I think you'll get used to it. I'm a programmer too and 90% of my use is general but I use a LG 22" TN all day. And once in awhile I'll get a little annoyed by it but for the most part get used to it or don't have time to think about it to care. And the bigger size of the V2400W would also be quite important to me for general (or not-so-general) use.

Thanks.

I don't really think a VA panel is an option for me since I'm after a low input lag display, and some of the other things I've read about them have convinced me that I don't want one. It's probably going to be either TN or IPS for me.

I suppose you don't think the 2007FP is worth considering at all?

looking for a bit of advice. I am planning on purchasing a new monitor at the end of this month, I have about an 800-900 dollar budget and it needs to cover some broad points ie it needs to be a work/play/movie monitor. Here are my requirements:

-24-30in (something bigger than 24 would be pref)

-Very good color reproduction (within that price range, I'd love to buy something more expensive but I need to budget) I am a photographer, I calibrate my monitor with a colorimeter every 2 weeks, TN panels are out and I am not sure about S-PVA etc with regards to color accuracy (please enlighten me).

-HDMI connection- I would love to be able to hook up a Bluray player to it/ .

-Low lag(as possible)- I do play the occasional game to I'd like it to not be problematic in this respect.

-easy on the eyes with regards to brightness- My current monitor is ridiculously bright and changing the brightness changes its ability to render colors correctly (ie unsmooth gradients etc) so I've had to keep it at 100, not good...

-non glossy screen

Any advice would be great. I figure I should wait till after Thanksgiving to make this purchase, with the economy the way it is there should be some good deals out there. Thanks again!

i just bought an lg l227wtg and holy jesus it is AMAZING!!!!!!!! maybe i am especially impressed because im upgrading from a fuzzy 8yr old 19in crt, but damn this thing is freaking awesome! not a single dead or stuck pixel, the only flaw i can see thus far is that colors at the top of the screen are a little bit darker than anywhere else, but it is only noticeable if the entire screen is a light pastel color(i tested this by making the desktop background a variety of solid colors), and even then it is really not much of a difference at all. i put in the calibration cd, but i think it looks great as is, so i just left it at factory settings. i tried to play around with the calibration, but i dont know what im doing and i dont see how there is any way i could make this thing look any better. to think this thing only cost me $259 is just ridiculous! thank you to this guide for making the shopping process very simple!

Does getting a better DVI cable help at all really? I was thinking about a monster cable DVI with gold connections. Would that give me better IQ than the standard DVI cable that comes with an LCD?

Generally, no. If you need to go long distances, like, say, 50ft, then yes, a better cable will prevent degradation, but otherwise, no.

You may need a different type of DVI cable, though, depending on resolution. If going any higher than 1920x1200 (or heck, I'd even recommend at that resolution), you'll need to use a dual-link DVI cable to handle the higher bandwidth.

Check out monoprice for cheap cables:

Yah, had my eye on this... missing a few features, but if the performance is good, could be forgivable... still waiting for a review...

Speaking of reviews, anyone seen a (detailed) review of the new Lenovo L2440x LED backlit LCD?

Samsung TOC T240, BenQ G2400WD, or LG W2452V-TF?

I want a great 24 inch gaming monitor with deep blacks, great colors, and fast response time. Which one of these is going to be the best for me?

I tried my best reading up on all of them, but I just can't decide. Any input would be appreciated.

Most 20" TN monitors that I've seen have ended up having serious flaws. All those 20"s are Samsungs, so they most likely participate in panel lotteries and have blue dominance on the bad panels. Unfortunately I haven't seen reviews for any of the 22" ones. It's real hard for me to just pick a model number I have never seen or heard of or advise someone else to do the same. I would go with an LG as Samsungs tend to have panel lotteries. The VW222S hopefully is similar to the VW222u, and that would be a good choice.

It's probably a general condition called simulation sickness: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_sickness

The most likely thing to affect eyes would be brightness and contrast. Most LCDs are fast enough not to cause any sickness from ghosting itself. Make sure you have proper ambient lighting, i.e. don't use a 300 nit bright LCD in complete darkness.

Why not just get him an LG L227WTG-PF? It'll be about the same price at $260. And I don't believe any 19" standard aspect glossy LCDs exist anymore.

Is there something about glossy screens that I'm missing? It's frustrating me to find a laptop without a glossy screen. I just don't get what made these popular?

Women who want to check their makeup and email at the exact same time?
People who want clear and visible evidence that someone touched their monitor?
People who frequently have things thrown at them and need the extra protection?
