I am curious why you don't recommend the Samsung 2493HM for gaming? It is by far the best 24" gaming monitor to currently exist and has zero input lag.

The review @ http://prad.de/en/monitore/rev...ew-samsung-2493hm.html indicates zero input lag, and more than acceptable color (although nothing but input lag affects gaming)

I have also personally tested it and confirm it has ZERO input lag.

I highly suggest you add it to the recommended list of gaming monitors... it far outclasses a few models currently on that list.

-24-30in (something bigger than 24 would be pref)

-Very good color reproduction (within that price range, I'd love to buy something more expensive but I need to budget) I am a photographer, I calibrate my monitor with a colorimeter every 2 weeks, TN panels are out and I am not sure about S-PVA etc with regards to color accuracy (please enlighten me).

-HDMI connection- I would love to be able to hook up a Bluray player to it/ .

-Low lag(as possible)- I do play the occasional game to I'd like it to not be problematic in this respect.

-easy on the eyes with regards to brightness- My current monitor is ridiculously bright and changing the brightness changes its ability to render colors correctly (ie unsmooth gradients etc) so I've had to keep it at 100, not good...

-non glossy screen

Any advice would be great. I figure I should wait till after Thanksgiving to make this purchase, with the economy the way it is there should be some good deals out there. Thanks again!

The most likely thing to affect eyes would be brightness and contrast. Most LCDs are fast enough not to cause any sickness from ghosting itself. Make sure you have proper ambient lighting, i.e. don't use a 300 nit bright LCD in complete darkness.

No, its not motion sickness i experience (i dont get any kinds of movement sickness, ever)

Its purely a headache originating from my eyes
Maybe its not even technically a headache, but an eye strain (sprain? not english speaker)

probably because they only recommend the lcds they like here while results from many of the review sites you find mentioned on other forums are ignored. An example would be how the LG L227WT is always hyped despite it having horrible colors and not being as fast as another LG 22 inch you can get for cheaper.

i dont know how you can say that the lg l227wtg has "horrible" colors. it looks damn good to me. i think this kind of nitpicking is equivalent to the WoW nerds to obsess over one skill being worthless because it nets you .030238dps less than another skill.

There's no particular reason it's not up, actually, other than that I didn't realize this Samsung had no blue dominance problem and didn't have lag.

The G2400WD used to be the same thing but better, with scaling options. After that was replaced by the V2400W which has more lag, the 2493 was forgotten about. It has been added.

Thank you for the suggestion.

Otherwise, keep the V2400W I think you'll get used to it. I'm a programmer too and 90% of my use is general but I use a LG 22" TN all day. And once in awhile I'll get a little annoyed by it but for the most part get used to it or don't have time to think about it to care. And the bigger size of the V2400W would also be quite important to me for general (or not-so-general) use.

Thanks.

I don't really think a VA panel is an option for me since I'm after a low input lag display, and some of the other things I've read about them have convinced me that I don't want one. It's probably going to be either TN or IPS for me.

I suppose you don't think the 2007FP is worth considering at all?

Really sorry it took me so long to respond. I have had a busy week.

I doubt you will like the 2007FP because of the aggressive coating. But maybe you will get used to this more than you will get used to a TN or VA panel. Just keep trying things, I say.

on some websites it is saying its a s-ips panel others are saying its a tn. can someone help me?

There is no difference, HDMI and DVI-D are electrically equivalent. You just need an adapter to convert one to the other.

The w2448hc is TN due to 160/160 viewing angles.

At least if you are speaking of the Australian model. http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc...2-3454237-3733149.html

Check out the HP LP2475w. It almost perfectly satisfies your criteria: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc...67-444767-3648442.html

Beyond that, there is the bigger-but-same-resolution DoubleSight DS-265W. However, reports say this monitor is pretty bright (no backlight control). There's no way I think the DS-265W is worth it over the HP anyway. Given the current market go for a 24" (LP2475w) or 30" (3007WFP-HC). The DS-265W's overall package is a bit disappointing though it has great screen quality.

And remember, be sure to use color profiles (including gamut transformation models) especially with wide gamut panels.

I have to agree I love the L227WT as well for almost everything. The only thing that gets me about it is the viewing angle/uniformity as you stated. I'm glad I've helped you make an informed decision.

I haven't really bothered to calibrate it. It's good as-is. You can eye the proper white point by adjusting R/G/B. Don't use sRGB mode: it makes things far too dull. If you are truly worried about getting proper sRGB colors, use the color profile emulation in Firefox and Photoshop.

Personally, I don't even use color profiles with Firefox anymore. It's pointless. Things look fine to me, not as oversaturated as my LCD2690. Whenever I use the profiles things just turn dull. Unless I was doing critical work I would not worry about emulating sRGB.

Grab the HP, as it's the only one I'm at all familiar with. It's a pretty good glossy TN panel that will definitely suffice for gaming due to low lag. It should have fine readability for general use with the only disadvantage being the narrow viewing angles of the TN panel (all have that problem).

I want a great 24 inch gaming monitor with deep blacks, great colors, and fast response time. Which one of these is going to be the best for me?

I bet that the G2400WD is. The Samsung 2493HM is another choice but it lacks scaling options.

They reduce glare at the cost of adding reflection. Therefore, you get a higher contrast picture with the disadvantage of being able to see reflections during daylight.

Women who want to check their makeup and email at the exact same time?
People who want clear and visible evidence that someone touched their monitor?
People who frequently have things thrown at them and need the extra protection?

Eye strain is caused mainly by brightness and contrast then. Have you tried changing brightness and contrast? Do your eyes feel like they are burning (sharply hot)?

I'd need to see a comprehensive professional review before I feel comfortable recommending it to others.

I doubt it but if you can find the L227WTG-PF for that price it's a great choice. Otherwise, check out maybe the ASUS VW222u, LG L226WTQ/L226WTY, Acer AL2216WBD, or any other 22" recommended in the OP.

I think it'll be alright for games. It shouldn't have bad input lag. Look for reviews of it, for example the user ones here http://www.widescreengamingfor...inema_Display:_20-inch

I do not like the E series very much. They are usually relatively poor in all image quality aspects such as color temperature setup, gamma curve, and response time. Check X-Bit Labs reviews to see what I mean.

Why is the w2007 too old? It's a good amount better quality than the E207WFP. And I have a 20WMGX2 LCD that's 2 or 3 years old that's better than almost any on the market today.

Xtknight, thanks for the extensive post which has helped decide two previous monitor setups

Unfortunately while on holiday our 2232BW got stolen I was hoping to replace it with a HP LP2475W as it seems like great value for money.

However we also plan to play quite a lot of Xbox 360 (by VGA -> which on the 2232BW we had to use a VGA -> DVI adaptor) on the monitor from close up. Would 720p upscaled to 1080p (I assume that's the best resolution to use) look acceptable?

Thanks again,
Joe

So its time for me to get some monitor suggestions.
I'm going to be building a new PC and i've decided to go with a dual monitor set up. i was thinking in the 22-24 inch monitor range. i've been leaning towards 22 inch since they are generally quite a bit cheaper than 24 inch which means a lot more savings when you buy two of them. i dont have a hard and fast budget but i am kind of hoping for under 800 combined.
i plan to game and do some movie watching. i've read op but i've had a hard time actually picking a monitor.

first, i dont want a 16:9. i want the extra vertical pixels.

I also kind of want a HDMI port and/or composite inputs for console gaming. I'm willing to compromise on them since i dont honestly know how much i would use them and because the few monitors that have one or either are mostly 24 inch monitors that are a little higher in price than i am willing to spend.

My big questions has to do with using a monitor in portrait mode. I kind of want to use one of the monitors in portrait mode but i'm worried that the poor viewing angles vertically of TN's would make that a bad idea. but i'm also afraid that means i need to buy a ISP since i want to game and VA's are slow but that also means higher cost. It also means that i need a monitor that at the very least has VESA mounts if the stand cant rotate.

So, what monitor would you suggest? I'm not in a rush and i could hold out to see if i cant snag anything on black friday or even after that when the stores are hurting. I just kind of want to pick the one to buy.

I bought an Asus VW222U and have been using it for two days now. I'm comparing it to my 5 year old ViewSonic VX900. Initial thoughts:

BRIGHT! WAAAAAY TOO BRIGHT! My golly, turned brightness down to 0. If anyone uses it as is out of the box, you'll burn holes in your retinas. Once I turned down the brightness, I worked on the contrast.

And I simply can't get comfortable with the contrast for office type work. If I turn up the contrast, the letters on the screen are ?pinched? and too narrow. Seems like the white is bleeding into the black of the letters. To combat that, I have the contrast (and brightness) both at zero. This makes the background of my document almost gray, but at least the text is bearable and I can read it fairly nicely. However, still not nearly as nice as my ViewSonic for text. On my ViewSonic, the brightness is on zero, and the contrast at about 50%. The white is pretty white, yet text is black and very readable.

Overall, I'm quite disappointed. I can't imagine how this would get a good review for office type work. Even light work, I can't get comfortable looking at it.

Now, the pros: the colors blow away the ViewSonic. Pictures that looked okay on the ViewSonic are MUCH more vibrant on the Asus. Again, I played with settings, and found that if I turned up the saturation to 50 it looked best. (Needed to switch to ?scenery? mode in order to access the saturation menu choice).

Also ? zero dead pixels. And nice styling.

I don't think I'll return it, not worth the hassle since I got it for $200 after MIR. And I can always use the ViewSonic for reading and office work, and use the new monitor more for pictures and video editing. But I simply can't recommend it. Not sure if this is a different screen from what was initially sold as VW222U, but it is just BAD for text on a white background.

Hey all...

I was at my local BBuy last night and saw the new Sammy ToC T240HD in action....
It looked awesome in the video/hi-def it was playing, but I was wondering if anyone has it and how it performs as far as games go....

Thoughts?

Sorry to hear. But good to know you've got a good LP2475w on the way.

Yea this should look OK. I believe the LP2475w lets you do aspect scaling.

was reading sometime ago that LG is releasing a 22 inch monitor with 1080p 1920x1080 support. I try finding that article again since right now i am in the market of either a 22 or 24 inch monitor. Can anyone provide me with some info on that lg monitor or give me a good suggestion of monitor to buy? I am planning to spend between 200-300 on it. Also, would waiting for black friday net me better deal online?

Great thread....but an awful lot to read. Anyways, I'm looking at a 26-28" LCD primarily for gaming. While I see the Samsung 2493HM highly rated in this regard, I'm looking for opinions on the 2693HM..

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks...
