Well I just purchased my first LCD it should be here in a week or less.
http://www.costcentral.com/pro...WUXIBK/L82085/froogle/

That is the one I ordered to all of you that have bought LCD's once it comes what are the first things I should do when it arrives?
1. How do I check for dead pixels
2. whats the best way to set up the colors/brightness ect.
3. . . .

This is a very expensive purchase for me I just don't want to screw up.
basically all I do on this computer is
1. Play World of Warcraft
2. PlaY City of Heroes
3. Watch anime/movies

So any advice or help you can give me to make my first LCD purchase a good one will be greatly appreciated.

P.S my current monitor is a NEC MultiSync FE 950 19" CRT
This should be a huge change for me, I hope I did ok.

Honestly, I'm not sure what to do anymore. 24" monitors are ridiculously expensive, 22" are a good size but offer a large dot pitch, 20" is too small and only ads horizontal width to my 17". There is no sense in spending too much on a monitor when they all have their flaws IMO. It seems to be a trade off between response time and image quality. CRT monitors, come back!!!!

Sorry to hear. But good to know you've got a good LP2475w on the way.

However we also plan to play quite a lot of Xbox 360 (by VGA -> which on the 2232BW we had to use a VGA -> DVI adaptor) on the monitor from close up. Would 720p upscaled to 1080p (I assume that's the best resolution to use) look acceptable?

Yea this should look OK. I believe the LP2475w lets you do aspect scaling.

Thanks again,
Joe

edit: Also, we live in the UK, so our choice of monitors are a little....limited

Thankyou

I don't actually do any colour specific jobs on my computer but this monitor is also an investment for the next 3.5 years at least

Sounds like 1920x1080 should look quite good on the HP -> however I didnt realize that the HP didn't have VGA input either. Is there much quality loss from Xbox360->VGA->DVI->Monitor (1080p)?

If there is, I might have to go with a L226WU or L227WT simply for VGA, unfortunately! (in the UK the L226WU costs £200 vs. the HP's £350).

Within the next few hours I am going to pick it up from someone selling it for £330 second hand (but barely used) -> Ill let you know how it goes, hopefully everything will work to plan!

I'm going to be building a new PC and i've decided to go with a dual monitor set up. i was thinking in the 22-24 inch monitor range. i've been leaning towards 22 inch since they are generally quite a bit cheaper than 24 inch which means a lot more savings when you buy two of them. i dont have a hard and fast budget but i am kind of hoping for under 800 combined.
i plan to game and do some movie watching. i've read op but i've had a hard time actually picking a monitor.

first, i dont want a 16:9. i want the extra vertical pixels.

Any LCD over 20" (besides medical LCDs) is 16:10 so you'll have to change this criteria.

I also kind of want a HDMI port and/or composite inputs for console gaming. I'm willing to compromise on them since i dont honestly know how much i would use them and because the few monitors that have one or either are mostly 24 inch monitors that are a little higher in price than i am willing to spend.

Two G2400WDs may be your best option. http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16824014173

These of course are 16:10s but they are cheap, fit your price range, and would be good for gaming. This has HDMI but no component.

My big questions has to do with using a monitor in portrait mode. I kind of want to use one of the monitors in portrait mode but i'm worried that the poor viewing angles vertically of TN's would make that a bad idea. but i'm also afraid that means i need to buy a ISP since i want to game and VA's are slow but that also means higher cost. It also means that i need a monitor that at the very least has VESA mounts if the stand cant rotate.

So, what monitor would you suggest? I'm not in a rush and i could hold out to see if i cant snag anything on black friday or even after that when the stores are hurting. I just kind of want to pick the one to buy.

The G2400WD also cannot pivot (change to portrait mode).

If I were you, given the current market, I would get a single HP LP2475w and maybe an auxiliary L227WTG-PF. I won't argue that it's hard to find a good monitor these days which unfortunately usually means a change of criteria.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...4005109&Tpk=l227wtg-pf

Or you could get two L227WTGs as well. But you don't get component inputs that way.

BRIGHT! WAAAAAY TOO BRIGHT! My golly, turned brightness down to 0. If anyone uses it as is out of the box, you'll burn holes in your retinas. Once I turned down the brightness, I worked on the contrast.

And I simply can't get comfortable with the contrast for office type work. If I turn up the contrast, the letters on the screen are ?pinched? and too narrow. Seems like the white is bleeding into the black of the letters. To combat that, I have the contrast (and brightness) both at zero. This makes the background of my document almost gray, but at least the text is bearable and I can read it fairly nicely. However, still not nearly as nice as my ViewSonic for text. On my ViewSonic, the brightness is on zero, and the contrast at about 50%. The white is pretty white, yet text is black and very readable.

Overall, I'm quite disappointed. I can't imagine how this would get a good review for office type work. Even light work, I can't get comfortable looking at it.

Now, the pros: the colors blow away the ViewSonic. Pictures that looked okay on the ViewSonic are MUCH more vibrant on the Asus. Again, I played with settings, and found that if I turned up the saturation to 50 it looked best. (Needed to switch to ?scenery? mode in order to access the saturation menu choice).

Also ? zero dead pixels. And nice styling.

I don't think I'll return it, not worth the hassle since I got it for $200 after MIR. And I can always use the ViewSonic for reading and office work, and use the new monitor more for pictures and video editing. But I simply can't recommend it. Not sure if this is a different screen from what was initially sold as VW222U, but it is just BAD for text on a white background.

X-Bit recommended it for text use and usually I trust them: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articl...splay/22inch-2_10.html

Also most TN monitors don't have backlights that are that bright compared to VA panels.

Have you tried the 'regular' or 'standard' Splendid mode for text use?

Um, i think you misread my post cause i said i didn't want 16:9. i'm trying to pick a 22 inch monitor with some decent color reproduction, fast speed for gaming and non-glossy panel to kind of slim it down a bit. i would go for duel 24 but the price just seems too high. i know everyone suggests the LG277wt or what not for gaming but i refuse to use a glossy screen. just wont work with where my desk is located. i like some of the samsungs like the 2243bwx but there are no reviews of it anywhere. so i need some help.

Also your wrong about there not being any 16:9 monitors above 20 inches.

Dell S2209W and S2309W are both 16:9
Benq E2200HD and E2400HD are both 16:9
Acer P244Wbii
i know there are some view sonics that are as well.

a lot of people are starting to make 16:9 monitors in large sizes.

I take back what I said about 20" monitors. I just got an Acer X203Wbd 20" for $130 and it is awesome. It is big and has no dead pixels. Gaming performance is excellent.

I thought you were trying to say you didn't want a widescreen (16:10 OR 16:9).

What aspect ratio are you looking for? 16:10, or 4:3?

For 4:3 there are no options over 21".

For 16:10, you could get two ASUS VW222u monitors. The Samsungs aren't a terrible choice but they tend to have blue tint and messed up response time compared to other choices like the LG L227WTG-PF, ASUS VW222u, and Acer AL2216WBD.

It looked awesome in the video/hi-def it was playing, but I was wondering if anyone has it and how it performs as far as games go....

Thoughts?

I'm not sure about the HD model (the one with the tuner) in particular, but X-Bit gives a review of the T240 here:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articl...ung-topaz_9.html#sect0

It's not a bad LCD at all, although the response time is not the fastest. I will probably end up recommending it for Multimedia given this review since it does have a very attractive design and feature set. Beware that not all of the Samsung ToC series has the same level of image quality, however. Take a look at the other monitors in the review for more details on that.

For gaming I would stick with the BenQ G2400WD and Samsung 2493HM.

Can anyone provide me with some info on that lg monitor or give me a good suggestion of monitor to buy? I am planning to spend between 200-300 on it. Also, would waiting for black friday net me better deal online?

Hmmm... maybe you are talking about the LG M228WA?

I have no clue what price the M228WA is going for and I'm not sure it's available in the US.

Any good reason to get the NEC LCD2690 (or LCD2490) over the Planar PX2611W for a system where color accuracy isn't particularly critical? Right now I'm using a Soyo Topaz P-MVA that I picked up for next to nothing from OM a year or so ago, but it's killing my eyes (I've never had eye strain anywhere near this from a CRT). I want to try out an IPS panel and it's down to basically the three I mentioned. I do a fair amount of gaming, but also a heavy amount of text reading.

What's the best 24" monitor for gaming?

- Moderate gaming (CoD4, Crysis, etc)
- Moderate graphic work
- Moderate video editing

- Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (3.6GHz)
- ATI HD4870 512MB
- Corsair HX-620W

I was headed with the Samsung 2493HM, although, not sure now, as that lacks the 1:1 pixel mapping. And that's pretty much all the cons.
What about the BenQ V2400W/G2400WD? Are there any cons about them too? If so, please state them, so I'm aware of them.
Don't know what to get, please recommend me an excellent 24" gaming monitor! Thanks in advance!

A minor update after purchasing the LG L227WT and using it for about 10 days now, very happy with the monitor, now it's set up (way too bright out of the box) the colours are vibrant, the response time IS noticeable and there were zero dead pixels in mine

If, like me, you're coming from an older monitor the LG will be a decent step up in terms of performance and although it probably may not be the most capable 22" available it was cheap and performs everything i wanted

Thanks to xtknight for the excellent guide and response

That's a hard question to answer, but I believe these LCDs are very similar in technical aspects. BenQ's V2400W and G2400WD are both decent gaming LCDs, so I have to assume the E2400HD is as well.

The Planar PX2611W (better warranty/service) and DoubleSight DS-265W are great options for that size range. As far as I know the 2693HM is the same thing as the 2493HM, just bigger, but I can't confirm that. Some sentiments from Bdbtoys on the 2693HM: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1290818

The difference here is that the E2400 is 16:9 instead of 16:10?

Does the Dell 2408WFP deserve a look now that it's down to about 550?

Interesting. BenQ's E2200 series are also 16:9. I was not aware of this.

For gaming, the 2408 has higher input lag than the BenQs. Check this out: http://www.anandtech.com/displ...howdoc.aspx?i=3449&p=8

Hi All
I have dual ATI 4870 x2's and am looking for a monitor exclusively for gaming.

I see that 26 inch Planar that is recommended, what about anything in the 30 inch range? Or are there any other recommended 26 inchers?

Or would people recommend I go with three smaller monitors?

I been think about these:

V7 Series D22W12 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor for 150, and it is cheap enough to help me afford a hpu upgrade from 8800gt as well.

L227WTG-PF for like 260 or possibility cheaper with ebay cashback.

BenQ 2200 or 2400HD. Will cost similiar to lg one thanks to cashback.

Which would be the best choice here?

The LCD2690 is a great LCD. The only thing I'd be concerned about is slight input lag. For the games you play (not FPS), I don't think this slight lag will bother you so I say the LCD2690 will be a great choice.
