Thanks a lot.

That's the first confirmation I've gotten of that. I'm surprised I wasn't even able to find any info on it. Now that I know it's using the LG panel, I feel comfortable recommending it. But not if it was using an AUO or CMO 22".

What did you use to get into the service menu?

xtknight, here is how to get into the Service menu:

Turn off monitor (by using the bezel power button).
Press Menu button and keep pressing it.
While pressing Menu, boot the monitor again (with the bezel power button).
Stop pressing Menu after screen has booted.

Now go to the OSD menu. It should now have a green highlighting color instead of normal orange. And there should be an extra submenu: Service. (On the bottom line of this submenu it says LM220WE1 - TLB1.)

To get the normal "orange" menu back, reboot the monitor.

Man - I have been using my first laptop and its been an eye opener to see what rubbish laptop displays are. Hopefully the new LED displays make some better colors. I got used to the NEC the past 6 months but looking at same photo on lappy and NEC really woke me up again.

I've been looking at the 23" Philips 230WP7NS as an alternative to the NEC 20WMXG2 for gaming because I feel that 20" is just too small, and a waste of a nice video card at that resolution. Unfortunately the information that I'm seeing for the Philips is scarce. I'm interested in finding out how the image quality stacks up to the NEC, and some more detailed info on the input lag. The list says it is an estimated 25ms total delay but I would like to know what that max/min are. Is anyone able to comment further on this monitor?

Also I have seen this monitor reported to have a Samsung panel by someone on HardForum...after taking the monitor apart. LG or Samsung are both first tier.

Now, it appears after brushing up on this thread that for my purposes (Graphic Design, Multimedia) the standout 24" choices are the BenQ FP241WZ and Dell 2407WFP-HC.

These are listed as ~$790 USD and ~$679 USD respectively, with the BenQ over $110 more than the Dell HC.

Here in Canada however, NCIX offers the BenQ WZ @ $690 CND (ie, $650 USD... that's $140 below market value). Meanwhile, Dell.ca sells the HC at $800 CND ($754 USD), which is over $100 more than the estimated market value listed by xtknight.

I realize estimates are just estimates, but am I crazy for even hesitating to pull the trigger on the BenQ given the price it's going for as a NCIX special of the week... or are there better deals I can get for the Dell HC that I don't know about? If I can get the Dell for roughly the same price as the WZ (which is supposed to be over 100$ pricier than the Dell in the first place) then I may very well go Dell instead of BenQ.

Hi fellow Canadian!

The reviews are mixed on the BenQ WZ. The non-WZ could be less risky, as the scanning backlight has some drawbacks. Have you seen this review?

http://www.behardware.com/arti...cd-with-screening.html

As for Dell vs BenQ, the $799 price on the Dell is full-price. It was on sale for $699 just last week. The 2407 has been on sale for as low as $649 in Canada a couple of months ago, before it was replaced by the high-color-gamut HC version. If you are ready to wait a little, the $699 price will come back, and maybe drop even lower.

As of yesterday, Costco.ca has the Dell listed @ $699.

I finally took the plunge. There's just no comparing the convenience of being able to return it no questions asked at an outlet. I should be receiving it soon.

The flickering on the BenQ P992 I've been using for the past 5 years has been killing me softly. And my desk is warped from the weight!

Not quite. Here is what I have on file for this:

Dell service menu can be accessed as follows:

Powering off your screen
Holding down MENU and + buttons while powering it on
Release those buttons and enter the MENU
Select FACTORY RESET
Scroll down to FACTORY

For 2n07 models (hence the 2407), you do not need to enter the menu once it is powered on, simply press the - button.

You wouldn't believe the amount of bad self proclaimed 1080p TVs on the market that are just downright terrible for PC use. Many are not direct 1:1 pixel mapped, so the internal craptastic scalar screws up the picture a lot. Some require you to bypass their tuners and try to directly "connect" to the source panel itself to obtain 1080p. While others with piss poor cheap components can't due true 1080p and instead show dual interlaced 1080i pcitures (1080p @ 30hz!)...just downright atrocious!

It wasn't as good as the 20WMGX2 for most things (e.g. skin tones), at least in PC mode, which was disappointing. On the good side, it was a lot bigger and brighter (VA panel). It doesn't make a good monitor nearly as well as it makes a good TV. Response time seems very high also, even for a lot of TV programs. How is response time/lag on your 47"? And do you have any idea about the panel used inside?

I believe the panel is CMO sourced:

http://www.cmo.com.tw/cmo/engl...?flag=20040804204008#1

It has a 8ms spec'd grey to grey response time.

I don't plan to keep this for long though, as the new generation of 120Hz refresh w/ LCD backlighting is now appearing with such sets as the new Samsung 81 series. I'm sure Westy / Sceptre will follow suit in the coming year as all vendors start migrating to this new generation of panels.

TNs actually have improved quite a bit. The only outstanding issue with them these days is viewing angle. Color reproduction is quite good.

1680x1050
20.1"-22"
fast enough for fps games
height adjustment

the last one can be left off i guess... but i really prefer 1680x1050 to 1920x1080 and will be playing games like 2142, cs/hl2, and cod4. i noticed the pixel pitch on the smaller monitors is lower... is it a huge difference? is a 21" an acceptable middle ground?

I'd actually prefer a 21" or 22" screen myself. The 20.1" is too small for text.

so far i have noted the following models with some interest:

LCD2070WNX-BK
225BW/216BW/226BW
L206WTY

Is there anything "wrong" with any of those lcds? What do you think my chances of getting a good 2007wfp are these days?

The Samsung 226BW might be your best choice since you can get color profiles for all panel variations of it.

The L226WTQ/L226WTY would be my choice. It doesn't have height adjustment, however.

Getting an S-IPS in a 2007WFP today is probably less likely, but again I don't read up on it everyday. I'm still not going to recommend it ever again until it is all S-IPS. Check HardForum.

i'll check around at hardforum/etc to see what dell is shipping more of right now. any particular reason you can think of that the pva 2007wfp i picked up last year had such a "screen door" look to its matte finish? is that common? the 226bw i'm looking @ right now doesnt have it and its matte.

as for the screen sizes, i would have figured that you'd recommend the smaller size for the smaller pixel pitch... wasnt really considering the 21/22" ones. guess i'll have to look into that a bit more... any other 20.1" vs 22" pros/cons?

both the 226bw and the L226 would be fine for gaming, right? (response time/lag wise). thoughts on the 2070wnx? given the specs i mentioned above, whats the best lcd with height adjustment?

as always thanks a million for the info and dedicated responses... this thread is above and beyond the best source for lcd info on the web.

xtknight just to followup, i've got it down to the L226 and the 226BW and after some more extensive use (@ a friends) and reading online.... you were right the 22" is the way to go over the 20.1". i also think the newer/better TN's will be just fine for my needs. now if i can just get past the panel lottery on the samsung and the purported ghosting issues on the lg, i'll be fine

bernardP was kind enough to let me know about the high gamut versions of these two monitors.... thoughts? any different than the other models in terms of performance/response time/etc? i'll be searching/reading a little more online about these "high gamut" monitors, but if you want to link me to a post or something that would help <3

I've been playing around with my 216BW lately and something's been bothering me... text is not displayed correctly, and some menu options are disabled (like auto-adjust).

When I view lots of text, most of it looks okay, but some of it looks... diffracted... I can sometimes see red and green outlines in some parts, so I guess that means that something isn't lined up. I know on my old Samsung 19", the menu options for "Coarse" and "Fine" used to help fix text display problems, or the Auto button would fix them if I ever toyed around and messed something up. However, when I click "Auto", the OSD says "Auto Adjustment Not Available". Under the OSD menu, when I try to adjust Coarseness and Fineness, the menu says they're not available and won't let me change them... I installed my 216BW's drivers, NaturalColor Pro, and MagicTune Premium, but nothing's helped. Is there anything else I can do, or has Samsung somehow nerfed this monitor (which would suck)?

I bought the LG flatron 226wtx for 350 here in Canada, and took it home, it was nice and bright but it had alot of backlight bleeding and the colors werent that great after calibration (using DVE) i was kinda disapointed, so I went to buy the samsung 226 that everyone hyped up about so much, it was about the same price.. The sales rep told me that he thought the colors on the samsung sucked comparing to those with 700:1 contrasts. So he told me to buy the BENQ 222WH, and i saved quite a bit it was only 270. Anyways when i got home the backlight bleeding was much better on this and the color reproduction out of box sucked, but when i calibrated it - It was wayy better.

I had high hopes for the LG I guess but i guess its to all his own perception. Im sure i wouldve liekd the samsung, I have 2 samsung tvs (the new LED DLP and a Plasma) and there both awesome

First off,

I've been following this tread... as I debate between what lcd to purchase for a new pc. It has been a great help and thanks to all.

But I have come across a problem.. one which maybe someone can at least say what's wrong...

"purchased" the acer al2223wd - to see if it's any decent, if it doesn't hold up to what i want at least, i will purchase a more $$/better one.

anyways, i'm testing it on my very old pc, p4.. 2.53, with a ti4200 vid card in there.

The card supports 1680*1050 fine. Only thing is, everything I've seen / everyone i've told to, have shown me that in the nvidia panel, you should be able to see the "display flat-panel" settings... something titled similar to this. This tab allows you to fix the aspect ratio - ie to prevent auto-scaling if a game doesn't actually support widescreen.

For me, I prefer black bars at the side rather than stretched fat lookng characters. =P

So, my problem is.... I can't FIND that tab!!! --> it appppears that the computer is seeing this 22inch as a CRT. --> i am using the latest nforce drivers for this - so it's not a nvidia driver issue.

I guess I'm wondering if anyone knows what is wrong?
Ie. is it the monitor that doesn't allow for non auto-scale?
or is it...
my pc needs a reformat (i.e this becomes first monitor it knows of).

I would love to know because if it is a hardware (acer monitor) issue... then it would be a HUGE factor in returning this... and going with a better lcd.

Thanks!

Does anyone have a good profile for the 2407WFP- HC yet? Or are most just using default settings?

Mine seems fine, just wondering if anything is better.

Does anyone have any data on this model and is it even worth considering?

Hanns·G HW-223DPB Black 22" 5ms ($259.99 on Newegg)

Seems like the only 22 incher out there with USB ports, currently. I know that manufacturers are trying to be price competitive by leaving out frills normally associated with 24 inch LCDs but I think that having the convenience of USB ports supersedes the ubiquitous integrated speakers feature (which is probably cheaper to make than USB ports).

I would like to use dual LCD monitors, side by side, like the non-widescreen dual 19" LCD Dells I am using here at work. What seemed like a simple idea has gotten frustrating because many of the monitors have switches on the side, or worse yet on the back. What are they thinking? I really dislike the touch switch on the bottom of my L90D+ because it is hard to find/press sometimes. My needs are mostly reading text and video multimedia. I will likely put a tuner in the PC to watch TV or video (HD?) on one monitor while I do something on the other, or use both monitors at the same time to compare different data. Minimal if any gaming by my wife. Since I will buy 2 and have them side by side, I don't want anything bigger than 22" max or I'll run out of space.

I see some monitors are HDCP compliant, but it yields a very small selection to choose from. I may at some point add Blu-Ray or HD DVD, but not until prices and usage is more common. I would like to be able to play HD video on this box.

I usually run some distro of Linux, but also have WinXP and Vi$sta home available too.

Can you provide some recommendations for this please.

I also need to find a dual head video card for this too (preferred) or use onboard and a secondary card like the Dell here. I realize the HDCP crap applies to the vodeo card too.

I don't really have any idea how much image delay the Philips has, but if I had to guess it would be 5 - 25 - 35 or so.

Image quality should be way up there, maybe even NEC quality. Remember, it has no glossy coating though. That's a key reason why the NEC looks so good.

Some LCDs use different matte coatings than others. There is "3H" and "4H", and I think one of them is more blurry than the other. I notice my ViewSonic VP930b's matte is a lot more annoying than my newer L226WT's.

Yes the 226BW and L226WT are good for gaming but you are more likely to get a fast, non-ghosting panel with the L226WT. I don't know too much about the LCD2070WNX but I'd wager the best <23" LCD with height adjustment is the Samsung 215TW. From what I see the L226WT and 226BW don't have it.

xtknight just to followup, i've got it down to the L226 and the 226BW and after some more extensive use (@ a friends) and reading online.... you were right the 22" is the way to go over the 20.1". i also think the newer/better TN's will be just fine for my needs. now if i can just get past the panel lottery on the samsung and the purported ghosting issues on the lg, i'll be fine

The LG's latest firmware solves the ghosting problems.

I commented about the L227WT and 226CW just about a page back but I don't think they're worth the upgrade if you already have a 22". If not, they are a possible route, but they are still TNs. If you want to wait for reviews of them and input lag measurements, go full speed ahead.

Which one did you get?

With WZ, you get fast gaming like never before.
With HC, a high gamut and natural display.

So, you can't really lose either way anyway. If it was that much cheaper I would have gotten WZ personally although the concerns with the scanning backlight are valid.

Yes it includes a new high gamut backlight. Other than that I think it's the same as the 2407WFP. If you want to know for sure I'm sure HardForum has a thread on it with a pic of every single feature it has.

I've been playing around with my 216BW lately and something's been bothering me... text is not displayed correctly, and some menu options are disabled (like auto-adjust).

Those options (e.g. sharpness, auto adjust, V size, H size/position) may only appear in VGA. That's because DVI is already perfect. Sometimes they have sharpness options in DVI provided by a DSP.

You have ClearType enabled, and probably poorly tuned. Try ClearTweak.

No guarantee that they will all go away, though. For that to happen you must use an OS that has better font AA or disable ClearType in its entirety. Calibrating the monitor with a colorimeter may possibly help.

Hmm. I'm not sure if DVE really works for monitors but YMMV.

You probably would have liked the Samsung a lot if you could get an S panel. It would be in my recommendations above the L226WT if that was the case.

Thanks!

Hmm, I recommend making a new thread on this in Video.

Sometimes right clicking the display in the multimonitor configuration tab will give you the option. Or maybe you need Coolbits...

I should add that it is definitely not the LCD that is preventing you from accessing the video card's scaling options. The LCD has no say in this, and nothing to do with it.

Reformatting won't do what you can't already do yourself to fix the problem (e.g. revert some registry key) but I guess it's a quick way out. I'm guessing it's just the NVIDIA drivers. Are you sure the ti4200 supports scaling?

Does anyone have a good profile for the 2407WFP- HC yet? Or are most just using default settings?

Mine seems fine, just wondering if anything is better.

Most are just using default settings, I haven't seen a profile yet. I'm sure there is better, you will just have to wait for someone with a colorimeter to do their magic.

What about the HP w2207? Much better choice IMO, and no integrated speakers.

Not sure, I just like front buttons too. There is no point to side buttons, at all. When you're using the monitor you're engulfed in it. You don't notice the bezel or the buttons (if you do you're crazy).

Two LG L226WTs sounds good, but the HP w2207s are even more enticing if you like the glossy panel and chance of a Samsung panel. Both the LG and HP have HDCP.

Some LCDs use different matte coatings than others. There is "3H" and "4H", and I think one of them is more blurry than the other. I notice my ViewSonic VP930b's matte is a lot more annoying than my newer L226WT's.

as for the screen sizes, i would have figured that you'd recommend the smaller size for the smaller pixel pitch... wasnt really considering the 21/22" ones. guess i'll have to look into that a bit more... any other 20.1" vs 22" pros/cons?

Well of course with 22" you can only get TNs right now.

both the 226bw and the L226 would be fine for gaming, right? (response time/lag wise). thoughts on the 2070wnx? given the specs i mentioned above, whats the best lcd with height adjustment?

The LG's latest firmware solves the ghosting problems.

bernardP was kind enough to let me know about the high gamut versions of these two monitors.... thoughts? any different than the other models in terms of performance/response time/etc? i'll be searching/reading a little more online about these "high gamut" monitors, but if you want to link me to a post or something that would help <3

I commented about the L227WT and 226CW just about a page back but I don't think they're worth the upgrade if you already have a 22". If not, they are a possible route, but they are still TNs. If you want to wait for reviews of them and input lag measurements, go full speed ahead.

thanks for the reply. i am going to go take a look @ the 226bw and the 226wtq in my local big box store some time this week. actually the lg i see available online now is the 226wty ...it looks to be the same thing.

as far as the stand adjustment, my plan was basically to buy something like this if it becomes a problem. any exp with those?

I guess I'll stick with the LG, based on your recommendation on 22" LCDs.

I noticed that you deleted the notes from this model, stating that it was the best 22 incher of the bunch; is that not the case any more?

Just wondering.
