Not until you mentioned it. I tried to look for reviews but I couldn't find very many, and the ones that I found were certainly not all positive.

So I am guessing you recommend a TN panel? I mean, I need speed but I would definitely pay extra to get the quality.

I cant believe that speed is even an issue, I was dead set on getting the Dell 2408wfp until I read how slow it was. Plus I saw a youtube demo of a guy with two different monitors, one of which was the 2408 and he had a single window open in between the two and was moving it up and down, the dell clearly had a lag to it. I would definitely notice that, I am very sensitive to fps.

Am I really screwed trying to get a fast panel?
What would be my dream option (regardless of price)?

Planar PX2611W. Well actually, a Doublesight DS-263N with the A-TW polarizer, but that's not an issue of price, it's an issue of the product not existing anymore.

If you want something faster than the planar, you're looking at a TN. If you want something slower of higher quality, a HP lp2475w.

The newer revisions of the dell 2408 are supposedly not much slower than the HP, if at all. If your taste (or wallet) leans in that direction, you might try it out anyway.

I'm assuming your talking about reviews of the Dell 2408WFP

Considering what site we're on lets start with the Anandtech roundup of 24" LCD's.
24" LCD Roundup
They give the Dell a silver editors choice award. They would have given it a gold except for the input lag.

X-bit labs did a review on the Dell by itself.
Dell 2408WFP Monitor Review
His biggest complaint with it seems to be the OSD.

TFT Central reviewed the Dell also.
Dell 2408WFP
They also seemed to like the Dell.

There is also the albovin review of the Dell that is linked to in the second post of this thread where it is recommended. I won't provide a link to that one since there is one in the second post. He seemed to like the Dell.

I think the only negative reviews I found of the Dell were on Trusted Reviews who it is suggested in the first thread is more subjective.

The HP LP2475w is also probably good, but if I buy it from CDW I'm pretty much stuck with it if I don't like it. The report of color uniformity issues in the second post of this thread scares me about the HP. There is also pretty much the same comment about the HP on HP's web site by someone that got one of them at work.

I'm kind of making the assumption that I don't want a TN panel based monitor. I'd rather give up some speed for a better looking display.

My take is the dream display is either the NEC LCD2490WUXi-BK or the NEC LCD2490WUXi-BK-SV. Since the first one is just about $1100 and the second one is just about $1300 they should be dream displays. Unless I was just rolling in money I can't see paying that much for a monitor. Also, I can just imagine how ticked I'd be if I spent that and found a couple dead pixels on it and couldn't return it.

I'm going to hook the monitor up to a KVM switch that uses a VGA connector. Using anything other than VGA means I have to buy a new KVM switch. That's another $200 or so and the DVI KVM switches I think all use USB mice and or keyboards, which cause another problem, so VGA it is. So, my take is the Dell wins for it's VGA port, it's Premium Panel guarantee, and it's lower price. The HP loses because of the color uniformity issue and having to use the supplied cable with a DVI port to connect it via VGA. The NEC's lose because of their price. As far as the input lag on the Dell I read some articles on X-bit labs about some LCD specs. That helped put it in perspective for me. Generally the only games I play are the Command & Conquer games so I don't think the input lag will be a problem for me. I never could get into FPS games and I only play against the computer so I don't think for me the input lag problem is a factor. Considering my specific needs and setup I kept coming back to the Dell as the right choice for me. If I did play FPS games I might have made a different choice. Oh, and my general take on the whole LCD situation is I'd buy another CRT monitor in a heartbeat if I could get one that was wide screen and had HDCP. The one poster was right on when he said welcome to LCD hell. I still think in general that LCD's are inferior to CRT's. My one friend was touting the weight of LCD's. I think the last time I moved my monitor was about 6 years ago, so I don't care about the weight.

Absolutley incredible thread! Extremely helpful!

Im considering buying the Dell 2209WA (i want a really good gaming monitor) but im concerned about the lag. The No.1 monitor you simply can't get hold of in the uk (even the uk version seems to now be out of manufacture), and the No.3 while available, seems to be trumped spec and price wise, by the G2411HDA (does anyone have a review/input lag information available?)

The requirements for the gaming monitors are CRT like response, so i suppose my question is, why is a monitor with a relitivley high lag (compared to the monitors below it) rated at number 2? Is the lag honestly not noticable? Does it have some other redeeming features that put it above the others?

I will base my final purchase based on this thread so any thoughts are greatley appreciated!

I just got an Asus VK266H and it is doing 75 hz at 1920x1200 on Cod 2 and WaW. I do sense some difference b/w it and my crt but I believe it is due to the size difference as much as anything else. The backlight bleed is noticeable w/ a black screen and the colors are not quite as good as a crt but otherwise? A great gaming monitor. For the $335 shipped, a very nice monitor. This is coming from a very sensitive fps gamer. So far, so good.

Can anyone with a S-PVA panel tell me if the Lagom LCD test shows color shift toward the edges of their display when viewed at about 1-1.5 feet(I have a 22" display). This is really only noticeable on the gamma viewing angle test and the magenta colored solid block. I didn't expect to see this on this type of panel.

Well acutally i run most of my online FPS's in low res, low grfx modes (to give the highest fps) thats why i was concered about this new fangled "input lag"

I just pulled the trigger on the BenQ G2400WD, managed to find a good stockist (finally) and it was only £219.

Mainly went for it in the end because i've always pined after 1920x1200 but also because that lag (even though i may not have noticed it) would have always been a little niggle in the back of my mind.

anyone here knows how to detect if a Samsung 2333HD monitor is a chimei panel or samsung panel?
can anyone also give an example..? we've read bad information about chimei panels because they're
poor quality in terms of viewing that's why we are picky..

I posted some photos here at OCUK link ,all taken without flash apart from box contents one.

Monitor ones were tricky because I have three large bookcases behind the chair where I sit so had to guess best place for camera on rear bookcase, the last one of monitor is oversaturated due to camera auto settings rather then monitor image.

Can any calibration software or tool correct for slight backlight bleed? I am not even sure if its a backlight bleed because it is not immediately apparent, but the screen is uniformly brighter at the bottom than at the top.

You mean my pic?...the answer is simple I have the LCD at angle so TN panels especially will show the lower part of screen slightly brighter then top part,if I straighten the LCD panel the balance is perfect, this is the vertical angle weakness of TN panels especially, plus the photo makes it look worst then it is in real life due to longer exposure setting of my camera without flash, plus the colour is well over saturated as well in last pic not a great photo, lastly the top right corner of the wallpaper image is dark anyway even on my MVA monitor so that part its the photo image itself rather then the LCD.

I a wondering if anyone knows anything about the newer LG 23 inch LCD ( LG W2353V-PF ) , in particular how does it compare with the #1 pick for gaming ( L227WTG-PF )? They are currently the same price on newegg.

Also, I am really reluctant to buy a LCD online, I would prefer to goto a store and buy it, is that a normal feeling? Do most people just buy them online now?

I do go to stores however the image quality feed is normally poor and never setup right in store ,plus online I can get better customer service and prices ,not to meantion pixel check too.

No matter where you go for your LCD there still some pot luck involved with amount of backlight bleed ,dead pixels etc....

Reviews can help but don't tell the whole the picture,I prefer to use my own judgement rather then others when it comes to monitors etc,I know what I want.

guys I think a panel lottery is in affect for viewsonic vp930b

My original vp930b was very good for tv/movies I was very happy with detail of colours and contrast ratio. Unfortenatly it died last week and I have had it exchanged.

Viewsonic sent me another vp930b with a year newer manufacturer date, on the desktop it seems equal but since I have been watching videos on it white looks very overpowering and the colours seem washed out, even when I adjust it the same as my old vp930b. I suspect they used a different panel and I am wondering also if they used 6bit with frc as in tv/movies I see what looks like pixels changing between alternate colours to produce intermediate colours.

Another difference which would indicate a new manufacturing process is the new vp930b has no backlight leaking even on the highest possible brightness setting, but movies/tv look so bad now even a laptop and my TN panel seems superior, I dont use the TN tho due to the abysmal viewing angles.

Has anyone heard of 6bit panels been used for vp930b, and any ideas on how to solve my overpowering white problem.

I got my Dell 2408WFP this week and finally got it connected to at least see how it looked. I only checked it real quick by running memtest and booting into Vista and checking out the desktop. I was almost afraid to plug it in and try it for fear I wouldn't like it. But, I have to admit it looks great and I'd have to say exceeded my expectations. I didn't play with it long because I didn't connect it to the PC's it's going to end up on. I also didn't attempt any calibrations or adjustments. I didn't see any dead pixels. My box says I got an A02 revision. I know what the change was from A00 to A01, but I did some searching and I haven't found any information about what changed from A01 to A02. I'd be interested in knowing what changed.

Planar PX2611W/HP LP2475w may be your dream options because they're fast and have lower input lag.

Otherwise, yes, I am recommending you a TN panel. And the G2400WD is certainly one of the best packages overall. The reviews of the other TN panels out there won't be very good, either.

Based on my experience with monitors with a supposed 32ms input lag, I don't personally believe that 32ms of input lag is noticeable. So that's why it's on the gaming list.

Unfortunately, no, there is no software that will deal with backlight bleed.

I assume these are all TNs. I'm not sure what to tell you since I don't know where you are located and what monitors are available. I assume that none in the recommendation list are available?

Yes, my VP930b certainly had a 6-bit panel with FRC. I'm not sure they ever used 8-bit panels. About the white, make sure your R/G/B components are under 50 and/or your contrast is under 50. These can cause burn at the end of the color gradient.

Just spent the last few hours comparing the Dell 2209WA and the LG L227WTG-PF next to each other. A friend and I were checking them out side by side. Well first, yes the Dell blows away the LG in view angles no doubt their. And the stand and the quality of the Lcd itself are better than the LG. But, when looking at the internet and text in general, the LG with its glossy screen looks much better, its sharper and easier to read. Also when viewing website the Dell has like a textured background to it when view websites. The LG is smooth as silk. Then we looked at pictures, and no matter how we setup the Dell the LG just looked much more vibrant and alive where the Dell looked dull and faded. In games they looked the same. Blacks looked darker on the LG as well. To me the only thing the dell beat the LG in was view angles and the stand. And I don't stand up when using the computer or sit to the left or right of it, I sit in front of it so to me view angles don't mean anything. I thought IPS panels were supposed to be much better color wise than a TN? No matter what picture we looked at the LG tn panel looked better, much more vibrant and alive. Is that the effect of the glossy screen? Because if it is I much much prefer a glossy screen to a matte one because they seem to make everything dull and faded. Ok now it time to get yelled at about how much better an IPS panel is to a TN I'm sorry I just don't see that, if fact I see pretty much the opposite....

Hmm guys I have a few models in mind : Samsung T240 (not HD), DELL WFP2408(A01) , Samsung 2493 & BenQ G2400WD. I've been looking into the 1:1 pixel mapping aspect and I read that Samsung T240 and Samsung 2493 do not have support it. Does it only affect people who play XBOX360 and PS3 on their monitors?(I don't play either of those though) Is it really important to have 1:1 pixel mapping(does it affect pc games/movies etc) Eg: If I set lower resolution will it be choppy in games or does it scale perfectly with black bars? I read a lot of good reviews about T240 how does it compare to G2400WD in terms of gaming and movies? How would you rank T240 on the list of monitors for hardcore gaming/multimedia?
