wat. i checked every day last week and saw no sale. >_<

Think it was on the 6th on the small biz side. Was again at the $450 aFter instant and coupon discount. Also used bing and have it showing up in my pending status already, so dell gave free shipping and bing paid for the tax.

Really good time to buy, besides needing a new monitor to replace my upstairs one that was broken, I noticed this morning while d/l my friday podcast before work on my downstairs that it looks like I've developed a stuck/bright pixel. So this will be my new main monitor and my almost 10 year old 2405 will go upstairs.

And I still laugh at those glorifying a TN panel over IPS for input lag. Viewing angle and general display improvements make any perceived input lag gains a joke.

As GZFant has posted, Dell has released the UltraSharp U2211H and U2311H IPS displays this week. They are both 1920x1080 sRGB monitors with DVI and DisplayPort inputs. These monitors took me by surprise, though it took no gifts in divination to predict 21.5 (see Apple iMac) and 23-inch IPS (see NEC EA231WMi) Dell displays.

There's already been a ridiculous Dell coupon that took the Dell U2311H to $239 before tax. At that price point, it would be very difficult to justify paying $200 more for an additional 120 vertical pixels...

With all the affordable IPS displays in the past year or two, it's becoming increasingly difficult to justify buying a TN panel unless one is a competitive gamer, or absolutely requires more screen property regardless of image quality (no $200 24-inch IPS monitors, I fear).

It's probably safe to assume the displays will be similar in quality to their Apple and NEC siblings, though the Dells will of course come applied with a spadeful of antiglare spackle for your viewing pleasure. Dell support arguably more reassuring than NEC's budget 'EA' series as well...

Hi,

I had purchase NEC LCD20WGX2 after the advise from this forum and this is going back 4 years. I have been extremely happy with my purchase and I thank the OP for all the help in choosing the monitor. Now I want to upgrade to a 23/24 inch monitor. I would really appreciate if any one can through me some suggestions and I would like to have the same quality of NEC LCD20WGX2. I don't want to spend too much money and I would like to spend not more than $500. I basically use the monitor for photoshop, video editing, may be watch movies through interenet browswer, kids play the games through kids websites. I don't really play any PC intensive games. So I need it more for browsing, photoediting and video editing.

Any help I would appreciate that.

Thanks

In that price range you should look at the Dell U2410 and the HP LP2475W, both of which have extended color gamut backlighting. The HP ZR24W is cheaper, but lacks a few features like the extended gamut. I was looking at the same thing a few weeks ago and decided that the ZR24W is good enough for me, and so far I don't regret the decision Check the link in my last post, the ZR24W review includes a nice comparison of the three monitors.

For office use I would definitely get a 16:10 monitor, I'm not a big fan of the 16:9 1080p monitors.

I agree about the 16:9 nonsense. There is a proliferation of such monitors now whereby 16:10 was the man at one point.

How is this for a funny story.

I got myself a 24" acer 1920x1200 monitor and suffice to say it is truly magnificent.

Through work I had a 21.5" compaq 1920x1080 monitor for my mother. She thought I was getting that for myself and giving her the 24"

She laughed when I told her and as nice as the compaq is the 24" is leagues above it indeed!

XTKNIGHT: First of all thanks for keeping this topic updated for so many years, it's such a great service to community and make researching monitors so easy. I'm a pretty picky gamer and used to stick with Sony CRTs for the longest time (part of it was because I saw how horrible LCD was on my laptop) until couple years ago I finally took a plunge and got myself LG Flatron L227WTG based off your Hardcore Gamer list. It was #2 back then and it's still #2 today only beat out by 120hz screen. I was really blown away by how good this LCD is even though it's TN. No back light bleeding at all, blacks were really blacks, really fast monitor. Didn't really care for viewing angles since I always sit directly in front anyway. The only downside was the 60 frame rate in games where I was used to 100+ before for silky smooth fps twitch gaming.

So it's nice to see they're improving refresh rates with 120hz screens. It's been long overdue. Just wanted to give heads up that #1 hardcore gaming monitor has come down in price to $300, another $100 off. Both Newegg and Dell sell it at that price so I think it might not be temporary. Pricegrabber doesn't show anything above $300 either.

got me u2410 earlier in the week, finally had a chance to set it up yesterday. out of the box it was beautiful, had to reduce the brightness by a little over a third but that's the only setting I felt I needed to touch.

however I now have a power save mode problem. the cpu is set to turn off the monitor at 20 minutes. when i come back after the monitor has been off, the power button is still blue (assume like my other dells it has a different color for being in power save mode), the screen has the feint appearance of being power (not true off black), and I can't get the monitor to behave normal without reaching under and cycling the power cord.

how do I fix this without resorting to getting a new monitor?

anyone know if they ever resolved the backlight & uniformity problems with the NEC EA231WMi?

I personally am waiting on reviews on the new, budget IPS panels from Dell, mostly the U2311H.
Despite what a lot of you might think, I actually am pretty sensitive to motion blur/input lag and stuff. I can't stand vsync being on without triple buffering even on no lag TN panels, and it just annoys me.
I'm just waiting for the IPS tech to mature even more in terms of lower prices/better inputlag/frame lag. I've been using either CRTs or almost zero-lag LCDs (some random Viewsonic from Costco that actually ended up reviewing quite decently for a TN...) almost all my life so yeah.
Since I am going to need a monitor soon though, I might just take a flyer on a cheaper TN model and pick up a nicer panel later on. Color accuracy differences aren't really a big deal for me since I"m not into any kind of photoeditting work, but general display quality is - which is why I"m content to wait it out.

Which would you buy?

1. Dell U2410 $499.00

2. HP ZR24w $318.75 (25% off from company)

I could also wait for the Dell to go on sale. In any case, which would you pick and why?

I just picked up a 2408WFP. So far, very nice, but I have a couple questions since this is my first LCD. My video card has DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort outputs. 1 - If I output my desktop through the HDMI point, it seems noticeably brighter than if I send it out through the DisplayPort. 2 - With HDMI, letter shapes in my text editor are smudged. For example, the serifs on a capital L are crisp on the bottom but smudged on top. Lower-case m looks like someone put their thumb on it and smudged it. With DisplayPort, all of these are perfectly crisp. 3 - If both HDMI and DisplayPort are connected at the same time, my display driver doesn't really seem to tolerate unplugging the HDMI cable while running. This can crash the driver, or send my desktop into a permanent driver error loop with the driver continually trying to switch display modes (going black). Is any of this expected?

sounds like the HP ZR24w is a pretty darn good buy at $318.

scratch that. just found out the ZR24w is not on the 25% off list.

Input Lag Wise/Response time

HPzR24W vs Dell u2410?

I"m leaning towards the HP mainly due to price, but if the Dell is significantly better in terms of gaming performance I might wait for a sale. From what I've read though, the Dell actually performs worse in that area and makes up for it with more accurate color reproduction...something that I can live without since I"m not a professional photo editor.
