And now, the LG L226WTY-BF 22-inch widescreen has appeared on NewEgg.

Yet another model number. This one has the specs of the L226WTQ.

I finally found out the reason for the different model numbers for web-only stores. It has to do with price-matching from/with B&M stores. Someone walking into Blue Shirts could never ask them to match a LG monitor price from NewEgg, because the model numbers are different, even if the monitors are the same.

Thanks for your help, xtknight. But just to make sure, on the review sites you have linked for the 20WMGX2, it is listed as 20WGX2. These are still both the same, correct? Anyhow, looks like I will get this monitor. Thanks again for your help, man!

Sketchy...but I have noticed that certain models, particularly LGs, were exclusives at Best Buy/Circuit City/Future Shop.

The 20WMGX2 and LCD20WGX2 use the same S-IPS panel to my knowledge, so they should have the same image characteristics. The only difference is that the M model has multimedia features (HDCP, component/S-Video/audio/TV tuner).

This is from the DisplayBank online newsletter (I thought it was particularly interesting). It sounds pretty believable and reasonable.

Basically, OLEDs will start showing up in small quantities for monitors by the end of 2009. Laptops seem to have even more potential for the technology's use.

Large-size (>10" include PC monitors) TFT-LCD shipment also surpassed 33 million units in May, which is a record high. That's good news for the LCD market, but that may make it more difficult for OLEDs to displace them as well.

AMOLED Slated to Show Huge Movement

Samsung SDI and CMEL have attracted great attention from the industry since 2007, when they moved into mass production of active matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLEDs) at fabrication lines. In addition, Sony Corp. also surprised the world by unveiling its plan to start volume production of 11-inch AMOLED TVs from the second half of 2007, while a number of companies such as TMD, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are also gearing up for commercialization of AMOLEDs, shedding light on the possibility for mobile phones and televisions using AMOLED panels just around the corner.

Samsung SDI was originally targeting January for mass production, but its plan has been delayed to July, due to problems with some processes that have a direct impact on yields. However, yields are now hitting more than 50%, and process stabilization work is under way; hence, it will achieve the launch in July, as scheduled.

With the mainstream 2.6-inch QVGA(240x320) AMOLED, 2.8-inch LQVGA(240x400) AMOLED, and 2.2-inch super-thin QVGA products that were showcased at the SID2007, which took place in Long Beach, U.S.A, at the end of May this year, the company aims to increase its yearly capacity from 15 million units of small sized AMOLEDs this year to more than 100 million units by 2008.

AMOLED Market Forecasts - Shipment Share by Application

[ image ]

There are a number of challenges for AMOLEDs, such as problems with the process, prices and lifespan, but no one denies the fact that the AMOLED is the next-generation display.
The KDC2007 slated to run from June 26 is anticipated to offer a valuable time to share the AMOLED market forecasts and strengths as next-generation displays through a presentation by Lee Woo-Jong, executive director at Samsung SDI AMOLED marketing division, which is leading the world's AMOLED industry.

Ah, I see. I just noticed the price tag on the 20WMGX2 however, and it's quite hefty. I guess I should go with the Acer you recommended as a cheaper alternative. However before I buy this monitor I want to ask how is the Samsung 226BW? From what I've been seeing it is a very popular monitor and seems to sell very well; however it is hard to find a Samsung made panel? Thanks again for your help!

"The best 20" widescreen TN (LG L204WT)."

xtknight, does that include being better than LG's own newer model, the L206WTQ?

Does the 20WGX2 exist anymore? I am looking at various sites and all I can find is the "M" version listed here. I want to get a nice widescreen IPS panel but I don't have the need for all of the multimedia features on this version. Is it possible to get the plain version or has NEC completely replaced it with the M? If not what else is recommended as a good 20 - 22" IPS display with good low response time?

You have the "Samsung SyncMaster 215TW" listed as another IPS panel but it's not available from Newegg so I would have to pay another $50 or so to ship it across country from some of the places that sell it that I have also never heard of.

Shifty3421, it's a lottery. So yes, it's hard to find one but if the info out there is correct, well try and get a monitor manufactured after April 1st. Read xtknight's reply to me a few posts above yours.

Still indecisive on deciding which 24" LCD to decide on (color accuracy and sharpness are my main issues, as a graphic designer)... I was here asking questions couple weeks ago, and from what I read here -- am WAITING for new products to show up in the next couple months, or older ones to drop prices....

Right now it's the NEC 2490WUXi that is the candidate...

What do you think, guys? Should I wait a bit more?...

LesNumeriques.com checks three Samsung 226BW made after April 1, and the verdict is...

two AUOptronics panels and one Chi Mei panel. So it seems Samsung France was lying when they said that all 226BW's made after April 1 have a Samsung panel.

The article is here (in french):

The 226BW is still a lottery, and at this point is mostly AUO and CMO panels.

Summary of "226BW ordeal":

- Samsung's own TFT-LCD dept was unable to fulfill demand for the 226BW, so Samsung had to outsource their panel production to AU Optronics and Chi Mei Optoelectronics.

- Samsung France stated in an interview with a French site that "all 226BWs manufactured after April 1st should be produced by Samsung"

- Users obtained samples of 226BWs manufactured after April 1st and determined this was not the case. Judging by color profiles, they had two AUOs and one CMO, none of which were able to match the quality of a Samsung panel out of the box.

I'm not sure I understand your question. The LCD20WGX2 (AS-IPS) is an NEC model, but yes there is an 24WMGX2 (MVA) coming some time in the near future. Acer also has 24" monitors, but these are in no way related to the LCD20WGX2.

As it stands the L204WT will have to hold the throne because I haven't heard enough about the L206WTQ.

Remember, DVI to HDMI converters are widely available also.

The LCD20WGX2 should still be on the market, but it is not a US/Canada model. Sadly enough there are no other 20-22" IPSes unless you want to take a gamble with the Dell 2007WFP.

The 215TW is actually an S-PVA panel, but availability is also limited (I'm not even sure if it's still being produced or not). When I'm sure that it's being produced no longer it'll be off the list. Last time I checked it seemed to be widely available.

As it stands, it is available new from ZipZoomFly: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/...jsp?ProductCode=232486

Probably MVA panel.

This isn't exactly a glowing review: http://www.extremetech.com/art.../0,1697,2141601,00.asp

I don't think waiting is worth it, as you may be waiting forever. The LCD2490WUXi should be a good choice for prepress.

Really nice thread, thanks xtknight for starting it and giving so much informations... I've been looking for information on buying a lcd screen and it helps a lot.

I'm looking for a cheap 19/20 inch lcd mostly for design. So while I care about colours, I don't really care about response time..

I've been looking at the different lcds available in japan, and I found the following ones that are within my budget

BenQ FP94VW
According to behardware.com, the screen from benQ seem to have a good pre-calibration default lately (the FP93 G X had a delta E of 3.2 which while not great is better than a lot of screens on the market): http://www.behardware.com/arti...d-quality-screens.html

Nec LCD195VX
I couldn't find any good review for this one, but it seems like nec has a good reputation.

Syncmaster 940BX
Syncmaster 932B plus-R/932BW-R
I have no idea of the differences between those except that the 931BW (I gues similar to the 932BW-R) had a very good review at lesnumeriques http://www.lesnumeriques.com/article-228-1625-36.html)

SyncMaster 206BW-R
I'm not sure for this one because of all the scandal with the different panels (between the S, A and C models)

Of course there are better monitors available but unfortunately I don't have much more than 350 000 yens (about 300 dollars) to spend....

So if anybody can help me to choose between those models or advise me to take another model I overlooked, I would be very grateful.
Thanks

All of those are TN panels so it's probably best to avoid them if you're doing color work, unless there are no MVA or IPS panels in your area or budget.

Are the Samsung 971P or ViewSonic VP930b available there? What about the HP LP2065, Acer AL2051W, or Samsung 215TW? Maybe the LG L204WT (TN) or L2000C (S-IPS)?

I would like to say the 206BW is the best choice, but indeed there is the panel lottery. Beyond that, it's kinda hard since I don't know which models are available in your area. I would be particularly interested in what NECs/LGs/HPs you have there.

If you could find calibrated profiles for any of these monitors it might make your choice a lot easier. Generally they help significantly even if you don't have exactly the same unit.

Don't forget about the Dell 2007WFP also. Even though some are PVAs you might get lucky. Even if you end up with a PVA it'd probably be better than a TN (especially with a profile).

Thanks for your reply

Well I gues my budget is really the problem here

I checked the model you proposed and found this

Viewsonic, HP: almost no model available

Samsung 971P is available but the cheapest price I can find is 52 000 yens (450 dollars)
HP LP2065 is way out of my budget 70 000 yens (576 dollars). But it seems that HP screens aren't readily available
Acer AL2051W: I can't find it, there is a Acer AL2017 at 200 dollars though but I don't know what panel it has
Samsung 215TW: there is a Samsung 215TW-R which should be about the same but it's at 500 dollars...
LG L204WT: available and cheap at around 200 dollars
LG L2000C: around 500 dollars like the 215TW

Am I correct to think that among that the 215TW would be the best choice?
For the 206BW, if I check that the panel is an S panel would it be a not too bad choice? How does it compare to the 215TW or to the LG L204WT?

I'm going to look more at LGs are available and check the prices in the small shops in osaka (here it's actually often cheaper to go to a small computer shop than to buy off internet)

Thanks a lot

I think the LG L204WT would be a pretty decent choice if you're on a budget. I'm not sure the 215TW is really going to help you that much with photo editing, even if it looks a lot better. I think that the LG has great color reproduction as it is even though it's a TN, so that's a good choice.

The 206BW S panel is probably not a bad choice (the 205BW (S) got a great review). It's not quite as good as the L204WT though, probably.

so is there another decent 20.1" widescreen available besides the AL2051W?...

i was waitin' for newegg to offer free shipping on it...waited too long, & now they've jacked the price up $50!...

i just want somethin' w/a 8-bit p-mva or s-ips panel to tide me over 'til i see somethin' worth savin' up for...the 20wmgx2 is quite nice, but the $100 rebate is 'bout to end...

any suggestions?...cheers...

So now, after doing a bit more "soul searching" I'm wondering why not purchase NEC's 2690WUXi, instead of their 2490WUXi... The difference in price is roughly $100....

But I'm wondering, how come both have THE SAME RESOLUTION (1920x1200).... Wouldn't you expect a larger size monitor to have a higher resolution?

Also, I'm asking, purchasing any of the above NEC monitor, are they supplied with SOME kind of a CALIBRATION SYSTEM, or must I invest more of my precious $ to get a hardware or software calibration product?

BTW does anyone know what is the latest revision of the LG WTQ? So I can double check if the model I'm getting has the latest firmware that resolves the ghosting issue.
