The LCD2490WUXi is good, but unfortunately no 24" S-IPSes exist that offer those luxuries like hubs or media readers or speakers.

EDIT: all black, thin bezel, blue led, good menu, profiles, tilt, height, swivel, sink...

The LCD24's power LED can be chosen as blue in the menu. It has height adjustment and pivot AFAIK, it's all black. The menu is great and it is well-calibratable especially if you get the SV version. But it has good stock calibration to begin with.

Isn't ColorSync just a program? You can't really do anything useful with it if there's no hardware companion.

Anyhow, calibration probably makes more difference with LCDs and I'd recommend a package like the Eye One Display 2 or at least a Spyder 2.

The 2407WFP-HC is fine, as is the VX2435wm or LP2465. I recommend the 2407WFP-HC personally. Seems to have the best features list of all those and wide gamut.

i love the size of the screen, its true that there is no such thing as monitor 2 big

however, i had 19 CRT before and i can't help but notice slight bluring when i play games. Weather its AirRivals or Call of duty 2 or stalker, i see slight blur when i move. other than that, its very sharp image. i didn't calibrate the monitor, but to my understanding its just for color accuracy. is it normal to see blur at 5 ms or do i have crappy monitor. please advice. Thank you.

ps specs
e8400(not OCed)
2 9600 gt oc leadtek
2 gb ram mushkin

Yeah most likely it is normal. The 245BW will definitely still have ghosting if you look for it. But the LCDs with lower response should have ghosting that is a little easier to get used to than the terrible smearing of older LCDs.

And make sure you're using native resolution on the 245BW(1920x1200).

Yeah it probably would be better as it's still an S-PVA, just bigger. But PC compatibility totally depends on what TV you get. Most are decent these days but I have no way of guaranteeing one specific model's PC compatibility. And it's best just to read advice when it comes to 120 Hz as there's no clear-cut answer. On some models it is done by frame intercalation, and by others, blanking or backlight scanning. That might determine how useful it is for gaming as well.

So far the best I can find is the LG L1933TR-SF at 200 (from Newegg). Is there anything better in the price range?

That's the best 19" gaming LCD I know of. Other 19" MVAs aren't as suitable.

Color reproduction is as good as those $1200 NECs or Apple Cinema Displays. That's what you can expect from the DS for about half the price. (Yes, I do own one, and do freelance photo editing work with it.)

You do have to make sure you use color profiles when you're using the DS-263N or LCD26. The ACDs are normal gamut, as is the LCD2490. Different animals and WG are not meant for standard use without a profile (although you can certainly get by without profiles on calibrated standard gamut monitors as they're so close to sRGB).

P. S. here's a good site for getting started with Photoshop profiles: http://www.computer-darkroom.com/ps10_colour/ps10_1.htm

I have already installed the latest videocard drivers...

My first screen had a problem with endless "find hardware" type beeping in sleep mode and with screensavers displayed. I got a replacement and this doesn't happen anymore. It seems that maybe the reason this monitor is cheaper is that the non-panel elements are sorta thrown together a bit carelessly. I recommend getting a replacement, as this worked for me.

Well, the thing is, I purchased a Dell 2408 before the DS and returned it (due to its high input lag). But the 2408 had the same problem.

I have a ATI Radeon x850 and i am running at 1920x1200 @ 60hz. There shouldnt be a problem with single-link DVI right? My previous 2407 (A01) did not have this problem.

Some monitors could depend on dual-link DVI AFAIK for 1920x1200@60 Hz depending on their timing setups. But you have nothing to lose by trying it and then simply replacing the card if it is unsuitable. Alternate DVI mode (50 Hz) is a workaround.

I'm not really sure as I don't use this program. One of the reasons I don't use it is because it's so confusing. With xcalib, you give it the name of the ICM, and it works. The best thing to do is to use xcalib "c:\path\to\myicm.icm" and put that in your startup by using a shortcut in the Startup start menu directory. With dual monitors you can use xcalib -s 0 "file" to use screen 0 or -s 1 "file" to use screen 1, etc.

I'm looking at a website of my own creation, so I feel like I know the color scheme there quite well and could compare, but there is absolutely no change to the naked eye between having no profile and having Toasty's. Gamma is still off by exactly the same amount, etc. I'd really like to fix the gamma at the least.

I'm guessing that the MS software didn't apply it. I've heard that it's flaky. xcalib is more logical and simpler to use.

Do I install the profile in both the color tool and via the monitor advanced settings or just in one? If I install the profile in Windows, do I still do it in Photoshop as well?

Installing it in the MS color tool will automatically have it associate with your monitor in advanced settings AFAIK. Essentially, placing it in "advanced settings" lets programs have access to it. In and of itself, placing it here will change absolutely nothing to your eyes. Loading it in the MS program should have loaded the gamma table, changing the colors on your screen by a little bit.

So, you want an association (placing in "advanced settings") and a "LUT loader" like xcalib (or what WinColor should have been doing). xcalib will not automatically associate the ICM. But you can just do that in "advanced settings" and use xcalib to load the LUT.

Programs like Photoshop or Firefox will pick up the association and use the ICM for other things like gamut transformation. The LUT has nothing to do with gamut transformation. The ICM is serving two purposes here.

I have 2 monitors on the same video card, and they both show up as "plug and play monitor" in the color tool. Is monitor #1 always the top one? It also appears that applying a profile applies to both, so maybe this is a moot point. I could use a few tips.

With two monitors I'm absolutely clueless about how to use WinColor so as I said, using the "advanced settings" is the best route by right clicking each monitor if you know which is which. You should install your monitor "drivers" and it'll take care of all this for you anyway (including naming the plug&play monitors appropriately), including installing an ICM capable of gamut transformation even if it lacks a LUT. And then you won't have to worry about it.

It doesn't matter that you used the ICM from the CD for association because the gamut on that ICM and the one on the web should be very close for your monitor. It's the gamma tables you want from someone's ICM off the web.

1. Install monitor drivers with manufacturers' setup EXEs or instructions.
2. Use an icm from someone off the web with xcalib -s 0 (screen 0) and -s 1 (screen 1) for each of your monitors. Dual monitors complicates things because one setup program might want to take over another and screw up the associations, but I hope that won't happen. You should be able to figure that out and verify that each monitor (after it has been properly named by the drivers) is using its own proper ICM. I suppose specifying the the same ICM you're using with xcalib to the advanced settings/association might change things 1%.

4:3 yes but I don't think 1:1. The PRAD review says no and I don't see it in the manual.

I saw it side by side with the ACD 23 and dragging a photoshop image across both screens the LaCie blew the ACD away. Does anyone have any info on this panel? The website says its a wide gamut (95% Adobe RGB / 99.7% of ISO Coated) S-PVA panel with a 10-bit gamma correction. PVA?? Should I even consider a PVA over IPS?

Thanks!

Well it is wide gamut so it'll be good for print work. I guess it's not a bad idea. If it looks better to your eyes, then why not? The Apple will have less color shifting which you may only notice when you're working on an image close-up and straight-on rather than just getting a glance of the panel. At first glance PVAs look better because of higher contrast, brightness, and a wider gamut. But IPS screens are usually preferred for real photo editing. Since you're doing print work too and I assume you have an Adobe RGB workflow, then maybe the LaCie is better. (NEC LCD26 would be ideal.)

I should clarify that and note that PVAs in no way innately have a higher gamut, but they do very often have higher brightnesses and contrasts. The model you were looking at had a high gamut.

I haven't ever heard of this but it's best to check the DS-263N thread. Honestly it could be a number of things.

Hello everybody!

I'm now debating between these 2 monitors:
1) Samsung T220
2) LG L227WTG-PF

My new computer is going to be used mosly for Movies, Games, and internet.

What is the best one of them?
(Or you have any better than these two..has to be 20'')

BTW the new pc is gonna be like that:
Case:
Antec Nine Hundred

what do you think,
1) should i change anything? (maybe the CPU to Q6700) is everything good?
2) what monitor to buy?
3) what motherboard should i buy?

Thaks alot!

The LG L227WT is probably the best option, simply because Samsung has a history of releasing LCDs which do not have consistent quality (due to use of different LCD modules in different units). The L227WT is also tried-and-true.

This isn't a PC hardware thread but I'll just stick my opinions in here for the heck of it. Please discuss anything further about this matter in General Hardware via a new thread.

1) I don't see the need because the Q6600 has the same about of cache and both are widely overclockable if needed.

2) LG L227WTG-PF.

3) I prefer simple, cheap, Intel-chipset based ones. Seek a 965P(P965)-based board or higher if you need support for extra features like more advanced virtualization.

Honestly I'd pick this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...16824014158&Tpk=g2400w

Unless there's some reason either the 245BW or W2452T is mandatory. The W2452T has not been reviewed by a pro (prad/BeHardware/X-Bit/THG not PC World/CNET), and the 245BW is considered inferior in most categories to the G2400W, albeit slightly. The G2400W has better scaling options and better default colors.

my question is if the LG L227WTG-PF is the best option only in compare to the smasung, or in compare to all of the 22'' lcd monitors today?

You could consider the Lenovo ThinkVision L220X or Eizo S2231W as more-top-of-the-line 22"s. They're the best you can get. But they are S-PVA, may have input lag, and are not guaranteed to have as fast a response time for gaming.

That's why I would stick with the L227WTG and move up to an S-PVA when you go higher in size. S-PVAs simply offer higher contrast and wider viewing angle (at most angles).

It took a little trial and error but xcalib works great, and wow does the profile matter I might add.

Couple things...

Does monitor 0 in xcalib correspond to monitor 1 in Windows, and monitor 1 (xcalib) to monitor 2 (Windows)?

The file is no longer available on the website linked in the calibration thread. I couldn't find it today, but fortunately I already had the executable from last night. Hopefully that is a temporary problem.

Now that I have this running, I still want to provide the profile through display properties for other programs to use? What is the point of doing that if xcalib already handles the display elements? If Windows changes the display and then Photoshop changes it again, won't I wind up with a much darker gamma look?

Thanks again.
