I'm having a hard time trying to decide between the Planar PX2611W 25.5" or a larger LCD TV with an IPS panel.

HDTV's dominate LCD monitors in video. Sam's has a Magnavox 42" 1080p for $798. On Black Friday it will probably be $598. So instead of having a 24" that isn't as good, you'll have a better "monitor" that is 42" and has many more features. The only issue is how to use a keyboard/mouse comfortably since you probably won't be at a desk.

What about gaming? I was hoping for an "all-in-one" solution (moderate gaming, video (dvd, hd, etc), and office work)).

I probably won't be getting a 42" as I do want to be able to sit at my desk and use my mouse/keyboard. So maybe a 32" would work better for me...

I'm about to start banging my head against this keyboard. I've been looking for a monitor that meets the following specifications, but I CANT AT ALL FIND ANYTHING!

-Non-TN
-24"+
-Minimum: HDMI and DVI inputs
-Refresh/Input lag good enough to play FPS games online.

I've scoured forum after forum and Google search after Google search, but still have not had any good results. I can come close to finding some IPS and PVA panels that have good image lag, but they are misisng HDMI or are 20". :x

I need the HDMI for by Xbox 360 and the DVI for my box. I've found some that are like $1,100, but that is too expensive. For that price I might as well buy the Samsung 46LN650 I've wanted for a while now. I don't mind laying some money down, ~$600, but that is straight up ridiculous.

Thank you for any help!!

Edit: I really like the HP LP2475w. Will I really notice the 1-3 frames of lag (AVG: 32ms)?

I also forgot to say thank you to xtknight. This is the best resource on the web for solid information. It seems like in every forum I go to the monitor forum is the least updated and the hardest forum to find information in. Thanks for keeping this updated.

Yes I was going to suggest the HP LP2475w. Pretty much perfect LCD for you. And I don't think the lag will be significant since it's an IPS. May be a bit better than VA panels. Give it a try.

And sorry it took so long for me to respond. I am glad the resource has proven useful for you, though.

Sometimes they reflect too much and this is probably causing the poor image you're speaking of.

What's causing the huge difference in the two displays? They are both glossy and TN and yet the Macbook screen seems to suffer more than the Pro. Is it just a matter of different quality TN panels?

They are different TN panels with the same root problem: viewing from the bottom is difficult. They may have different gamma settings, causing different forms of inversion to occur at the bottom angle. Whatever the case, they both look like crap from the bottom which is telltale of TN panels. Maybe one has a better compensation film, or maybe the picture wasn't captured from the right angle to frame both LCDs' bottom angle performance.

They are dedicated to showing video while LCD monitors struggle. Makes you wonder if you should have a dual display using a cheap LCD for regular use and a large HDTV for gaming and movies.

Yeah it does sometimes make me wonder. I doubt that LCD monitors will ever adopt as many IPS panels as TVs.

AFAIK many TVs still use LG Philips IPS panels and panels from IPS Alpha, Ltd. And there are still many advances like 120 Hz/180 Hz: http://www.ips-alpha.co.jp/en/technology/wxga.html

I don't know where the LCD HDTV market is trending but if you can get decently priced standard gamut IPS panels I think going with a cheaper monitor combined with an HDTV works best for most users.

There's a disturbing trend with LCD monitors being released with wider and wider gamuts which doesn't make sense for 99.9% of users out there. Operating systems and applications are simply too far behind the curve in terms of color awareness so people will just end up with oversaturated images.

I've had hard luck finding panel information on LCD TVs, unfortunately. But I do agree an LCD TV is a better option for those looking for a good screen for multimedia purposes. Almost all TVs are VA or IPS, above 30", and available for a decent price. Unfortunately many are only 1280x720 and downscaling may not bode well with desktop use.

I don't really think wide gamut is a big deal. I've enjoyed many movies on my wide gamut LCD and never wished to go back to sRGB. For photo editing it can be a problem but otherwise it's preferable IMO. I do use sRGB emulation in my browser (Firefox 3) because websites can look a little off.

Seems like a good deal.

You can expect bottom of the barrel with a 24" LCD at $220.

I'm going to primarily use it for gaming and other basic stuff (word processing, net surfing, etc.), so I'm not picky about whether it's a TN panel, since I'm not going to be doing any graphics editing. I'm trying be as cost-efficient as I can, as I'm also building a PC to go along with it. Two models have caught my eye, the Samsung 2493HM for $349 and the HP w2408 for $400. I was wondering if the HP was worth it for the extra $50 bucks?

The HP is probably worth it but what about the BenQ V2400W? Probably the best choice of all.

Here's the summary:

"For a 24-inch model with an S-IPS panel, the price of ? 550.00 is a downright bargain. The features and high-quality colour reproduction make the model an insider tip for graphics workers with a small budget. Even more demanding users who do not want to have to deal with the viewing angle dependencies of the widely used TN panel will take pleasure in this model.

Overall rating: VERY GOOD"

Wow, 16-page review and they didn't mention anywhere whether it has an anti-glare or glossy screen treatment.

It is anti-glare, matte.

Not sure really. I don't delve into the LCD TV market much. I don't have a definite preference of VA or IPS when it comes to the bigger TVs. Both seem to perform well for TV use. It's also difficult to find panel information.

But you can consider the Dell 3007WFP-HC (IPS) for gaming.

Firstly, I want to say that you've done an awesome job xtknight. I was all over the internet and your OP is the best monitor post I could find!

I used it as a jump off point and spent a lot of time comparing your recommendations with x bit labs. I'm still hesitant about biting the bullet though so I was hoping you could help me reach a decision.

I'm looking to get a monitor that will primarily be used for office work. I have only used TN panels in my life so I don't know what I am missing, but I think it would be great to have a decently accurate (as far as color) monitor. Since I'm broke my number one choice is the Asus VW222u which seems to be pretty good for a TN panel.

Here are the things keeping me from jumping on the buy:

Do I need a 22"? I would get a crisper image on a 20" monitor that has the same resolution. Is the difference between the two that big? On one hand I think it would be nice to have larger text (as long at it is still smooth) but it would also be sweet to have nice crisp images.

Is there a 20" monitor with a *va panel that is in my budget (trying to stay around $200)? The monitor I get will be on sale, coupons etc..) If so maybe this is the better buy as an overall monitor.

I notice that you keep the recommendation post updated, but is now a good time to buy a monitor? Is asus prepping a better version of the VW222u that is coming out soon? Are the newest monitors cheap enough to be worth considering?

These are the main things I'm wondering. What would you do if you were in my situation? I've tried finding reviews on more recent monitors using links you suggested, but I haven't found any great reviews.

Thanks again for all your help and for maintaining this awesome thread! I for one truly appreciate it!

Hey xtknight, I recently bought the DS-265w. I like the image quality of it, however the monitor is way way too bright for desktop use and the brightness control on the on-screen menu seems to only be a digital black level control. Is there any other way to reduce the brightness of the monitor to a usable level using this control, or using software settings, without messing up the image quality/contrast/color balance?

I've basically nailed it down to these two monitors, but any suggestions are appreciated:

Lenovo l220x ($450) vs HP LP2475w ($750), in Canada

Priorities: 1920x1200, wide gamut, good image quality and colour for web design and photo editing.

Is the HP worth the extra $300? I don't care about the extra 2", but the image quality is a concern.

So I've been using the LG L227 now for about a week and a half, and I've been extremely impressed so far, the colors are extremely vibrant, the response times unnoticeable, and all in all a suitable upgrade from my NEC 90GX2 (which I'm now using as a 2nd Monitor).

-thanks to xtnight for the help in choosing this monitor!

how much of a difference is it between 22in and 24 in monitors in terms of delivering HD quality? on the net i keep reading people say that 24inch is the way to go since it can display HD at its native resolution. I'm wondering because i notice that there is a big price jump between many of the 22inch and 24 inch monitors. I'm also thinking about a dual monitor set up with makes that price jump times 2 if i opt for two 24 inch monitors.

I received my new LP2475w as well.

And there's a blackish object in the middle of the screen. Looks like debris stuck behind the panel.

Just freakin great. I should have just kept the other one it was getting less and less with more useage. Now I really have a broken one. Have to wait for their asses to send me another one. Take MORE time off work just for them AGAIN.

GRRRRRR

Sorry, needed to vent.

What is the best 19 inch non wide screen right now? I'd prefer glossy screen but non glossy is also ok. It would be for my sister...

On the flip side, prices at Dell.com and Dell.ca weren't at parity when our dollars were.

So, it's a legitimate reason but Dell, along with every other retailer, are ****ing hypocrites.

I would get the VW222u and leave the future for upgrading to bigger and better things, if such things exist.

There isn't a way without messing up gamma, but you can use brightness in video card settings. If I were you I'd just get used to it. It shouldn't be exorbitantly bright at 0 brightness and contrast...

I can't tell you if it is or not, that's really up to you. I can tell you the LP2475w has an H-IPS panel which eliminates the gray shifting that occurs with VA panels. If I were you I would get the LP2475w.
