I think the following is not only realistic, but what many of us want. Tell me what you guys think:
Let's start with Doublesight's 263N for $700 - I think these tweaks to its specs could be done to make a near ideal monitor for everybody:
-better chasis/stand: ~$50
-led backlight with local dimming: ~$150
-polarizer: ~$50
-more inputs with good scaler ~$50
There you go, the ultimate monitor for $1000. Unlikely HP, NEC, or Samsung will make this, since they have monitors with some of these killer features (but with important gaps in feature set) but expect professional-level pricing from them ($1500+). If the 263N was available still I was going to go with that one, but it's not. I was tempted by then BenQ v2400, but TN's limitations deter me. I look at the 24" NEC and get tempted, but the input lag is not as good as Doublesights, and inputs are lacking, I look at others, and the scaler sucks...
It's not so much price that's been holding me back, but if I'm paying a premium for a uber monitor, I want it all. It annoys me that Samsung has a 40" LCD TV with LED backlighting with local dimming for a song, yet that feature in a computer monitor suddenly makes it worth an order of magnitude more.
So, what are YOU guys willing to pay for an uber-monitor? I'd say if it had all the above, I may even part with $1200.
